Orthodontists' and parents' perception of finished occlusion and willingness to extend treatment time.

INTRODUCTION: Patients and parents want shorter treatment times, but it is unclear whether they would compromise outcome quality to shorten treatment. The purpose of this study was to compare orthodontists' and parents' perceptions of finished occlusion and their willingness to extend treatment time to achieve improved outcomes. The effects of elapsed treatment time and patient compliance were also investigated. METHODS: Parallel surveys for orthodontists (n = 1000) and parents (n = 750) displayed simulated treatment outcomes of well-aligned teeth with occlusions in 1 mm increments from 3 mm

Rise time perception in children with reading and combined reading and language difficulties.

Using a non-speech-specific measure of prosody, rise time perception, Goswami and her colleagues have found that individuals with dyslexia perform significantly worse than nonimpaired readers. Studies have also found that children and adults with specific language impairment were impaired on these tasks. Despite the high comorbidity of these disorders, only one study has assessed rise time sensitivity in children with comorbid reading and oral language difficulties. The authors further examined rise time sensitivity in children with both reading and oral language difficulties. They compared pe

Time perception: does it distinguish ADHD and RD children in a clinical sample?

This study used a double-dissociation design to evaluate whether children with ADHD demonstrated specific deficits relative to children with Reading Disorders. Recent theory suggests that ADHD children have deficits in time perception and working memory, whereas RD children have deficits in phonological decoding. The performance of 113 clinic-referred children aged 6-11 was examined using measures of working memory, phonological processing, and time perception. Respondents completed two time production tasks in which they were to judge when 30-s had elapsed, and another in which they were aske

[Evaluation of time parameters of visual perception in the diagnosis of retrobulbar neuritis].

The suggested complex of the perimetric and electrophysiologic methods for the assessment of the function of the visual analyzer has helped detect diffuse involvement of the ocular system in clinically unilateral retrobulbar neuritis and define the incidence rate of involvement of the contralateral normal optic nerve. Prolongation of the latency of visual perception appears to be characteristic of retrobulbar neuritis and indicates the demyelinization of the nerve visual fibers.

Relationship of Reaction Time to Perception of a Stimulus and Volitionally Delayed Response.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Initiation of response in a simple reaction time (RT) task may precede conscious perception of the stimulus. Since volitionally delayed responses may require conscious perception of the stimulus before response initiation, it has been hypothesized that volitionally delayed responses will markedly delay RT. METHODS: We conducted two experiments with separate groups of healthy volunteers (n=16; n=13) who performed computerized simple and choice RT tasks. In the standard condition, we instructed the participants to respond to a visual stimulus by pushing a button as qui

The development of problem solving: Integrating perception, cognition, and action in real time.

This paper reviews research on problem solving from infancy through childhood, with particular attention to tool use, means-end behavior, planning, and action selection. Across classic and recent studies, we show that developmental progress is not captured fully by whether children succeed on a task, but also by how they solve it in real time. Findings from behavioral, kinematic, eye-tracking, neural, and computational work suggest that successful problem solving depends on the timing and coordination of multiple processes, including information gathering, motor preparation, and online adjustm

A comparative study of time perception in long-term meditators and non-meditators.

This study investigates how mindfulness meditation influences time perception by comparing practicing meditators and non-meditators (n = 30) on retrospective and prospective timing tasks. Retrospective time perception was assessed after an 11-min session of Naad Brahma meditation (for meditators) or listening to an audio story (for controls). Prospective time estimation was measured using rhythmically ambiguous music, with participants indicating perceived durations of 40 s, 3 min, and 8 min. Results showed that meditators estimated the retrospective interval more accurately than nonmeditators

Real-time brain-controlled selective hearing enhances speech perception in multi-talker environments.

Understanding speech in noisy environments is difficult for many people, and current hearing aids often fail because they amplify all sounds rather than the talker of interest. Auditory attention decoding (AAD) offers a potential solution by using the listener's brain signals to identify and enhance the attended speaker, but it has been unclear whether this can provide real-time perceptual benefits. Here we used high-resolution intracranial electroencephalography in patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures to implement a closed-loop system that achieves the decoding fidelity necessary to d

Time Perception in Prodromal Alzheimer's Dementia and in Prodromal Dementia With Lewy Bodies.

Background: Time perception is a subjective experience or sense of time. Previous studies have shown that Alzheimer's dementia (AD) patients have time perception deficits compared to a cognitively unimpaired control group (CU). There are only a few studies on dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) patients' time perception in comparison with CU and AD patients. Early intervention and prescription of the right medicine may delay the deterioration of AD and DLB, moreover, knowing how prodromal AD (prAD) and prodromal DLB's (prDLB) time perception differ from each other might be helpful for future under

Understanding time perception through non-invasive brain stimulation techniques: A review of studies.

The present review includes transcranial magnetic and transcranial electric stimulation studies on time perception and shows that the neural processing of time requires the activity of wide range-distributed brain networks. Moreover, a critical discussion regarding non-invasive brain stimulation in the study of time processing is included to give the reader insights into the study of temporal processing in neuroscience. The cerebellum and auditory cortex seem most crucial when participants are required to estimate the passage of sub-seconds intervals and this conclusion holds independently of

Time perception, impulsivity, emotionality, and personality in self-harming borderline personality disorder patients.

To investigate how time perception may contribute to the symptoms of self-harming Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) patients, 19 self-harming BPD inpatients and 39 normal controls were given measures of time perception, impulsivity, personality, emotion, and BPD characteristics. A test sensitive to orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) function ("Frontal" Behavior Questionnaire) was also administered, as the OFC has been associated with impulsivity and time perception. BPD patients produced less time than controls, and this correlated with impulsiveness and other characteristics commonly associated w

Predictive processing in time perception: Assessing prediction error minimization in the sub-second range.

The predictive processing theory proposes that minimization of prediction error is a governing principle of perception, learning, and behavior, yet few studies have directly tested this hypothesis in time perception. We operationalized prediction error minimization as updating of an internal temporal reference and examined whether reference updating follows the direction required to reduce systematic prediction error. Across two experiments, 60 university students (Experiment 1) and 359 adults from a broader age range (Experiment 2) performed a temporal generalization task. Reference updating

The Emotional Experience of Time: Effects of Anxiety and Interoceptive Ability on Temporal Perception.

Our experience of time is deeply shaped by emotional and bodily states. Anxiety is known to distort our temporal perception, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we tested whether interoception links anxiety to variability in timing. Thirty participants underwent fMRI while performing a temporal reproduction task within a modified Threat of Scream paradigm. Safe and Threat blocks alternated, with aversive screams unpredictably delivered during Threat blocks. Screams reliably increased subjective anxiety and engaged salience and limbic regions, including the amygdala, h

Neural substrates of accurate perception of time duration: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Time duration, an essential feature of the physical world, is perceived and cognitively interpreted subjectively. While this perception is deeply connected with arousal and interoceptive signals, the underlying neural mechanisms remain elusive. As the insula is critical for integrating information from the external world with the organism's inner state, we hypothesized that it might have a central role in the perception of time duration and contribute to its estimation accuracy. We conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging study with 27 healthy participants performing temporal duration

Impaired decision-making and time perception in individuals with stroke: Behavioral and neural correlates.

Several studies have demonstrated that stroke subjects present impairment of functions related to decision-making and timing, involving the information processing in the neural circuits of the cerebellum in association with the prefrontal cortex. This review is aimed to identify the gaps, and demonstrate a better understanding of decision-making and timing functions in the patients with stroke. Electronic literature database was searched and the findings of relevant studies were used to explore the mechanisms of decision-making and timing in patients with stroke, as well as the circuit connect

Exploring the interplay between addiction and time perception: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Prior studies have investigated the immediate impacts of substances on temporal perception, the impact of temporal outlook, and the consequences of modified temporal perception on addictive behaviors. These inquiries have provided valuable perspectives on the intricate associations between addiction and time perception, enriching the groundwork for forthcoming research and therapeutic strategies. This comprehensive review aims to further explore intricate correlation among diverse addictive substances-namely alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, opioids-and non-substance addictions such as internet gam

EEG correlates of cognitive time scales in the Necker-Zeno model for bistable perception.

The Necker-Zeno model of bistable perception provides a formal relation between the average duration of meta-stable percepts (dwell times T) of ambiguous figures and two other basic time scales (t0, ΔT) underlying cognitive processing. The model predicts that dwell times T covary with t0, ΔT or both. We tested this prediction by exploiting that observers, in particular experienced meditators, can volitionally control dwell times T. Meditators and non-meditators observed bistable Necker cubes either passively or tried to hold their current percept. The latencies of a centro-parietal event-relat

Hearing shapes our perception of time: temporal discrimination of tactile stimuli in deaf people.

Confronted with the loss of one type of sensory input, we compensate using information conveyed by other senses. However, losing one type of sensory information at specific developmental times may lead to deficits across all sensory modalities. We addressed the effect of auditory deprivation on the development of tactile abilities, taking into account changes occurring at the behavioral and cortical level. Congenitally deaf and hearing individuals performed two tactile tasks, the first requiring the discrimination of the temporal duration of touches and the second requiring the discrimination
