Exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive symptoms, and functional impairment among women of reproductive age are pressing public health and human rights issues in conflict-affected settings. However, to better inform policy and influence positive change, there is a need to understand the trajectories and relationships between these issues over time. We aimed to characterize the trajectories and associations between IPV, depressive symptoms, PTSD, and functional impairment over time among women of reproductive age in conflict-affected, low-re

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat, with the highest burden in low-income and middle-income countries where diagnostic and surveillance capacity are often limited. Over the past decade, Timor-Leste has made substantial progress in strengthening microbial diagnostics and AMR surveillance capacity. We aimed to describe antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and temporal trends among priority bacterial pathogens in Timor-Leste between 2020 and 2025.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed antimicrobial susceptibility patterns for WHO priority pathogens isolate

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is increasing globally and regionally. Despite Timor Leste is still considered as low prevalence country with less than 0.2%, it is believed that the number of people living with HIV (PLWH) are slowly on the rise. Viral load subsequently has been introduced to evaluate the effects of antiretroviral therapy (ART), to monitor viral suppression and to detect treatment failure even in low middle income countries. There have been limited studies on the prevalence and associated factors of viral load non-suppression among PLWH in Timor

OBJECTIVES: To describe antimicrobial use (AMU) in patients admitted to hospitals in Timor-Leste.
METHODS: In 2020 and 2021, we undertook antimicrobial prescribing point prevalence surveys across all six hospitals in Timor-Leste (one national and five municipal) to describe AMU and appropriateness in admitted patients.
RESULTS: In 2020, 291/394 (73.9%) surveyed patients had been prescribed antimicrobials, compared with 260/403 (64.5%) in 2021 (P = 0.004). Most (309/551; 56.1%) were prescribed one antimicrobial, and 179/551 (32.5%) were prescribed two. The most commonly prescribed antibiotics

The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology of patients presenting with acute burns and undergoing admission at Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares (HNGV) in Dili, Timor-Leste in the period 2013 to 2019. HNGV is the only tertiary referral hospital in Timor-Leste. This was a retrospective study involving all acute burn patients admitted to the surgical wards of HNGV from 2013 to 2019. The data was collected from patient charts and hospital medical archives. Data were reviewed and analyzed statistically in terms of age, gender, residence, cause, total body surface area (TBSA), burns

We tested a trauma-focused, cognitive-behavior therapy treatment (TF-CBT-anger) for intermittent explosive disorder (IED) and related dimensions of anger adapted to the local culture in postconflict Timor-Leste. The intention-to-treat sample (n = 78) comprised Timorese nationals (women = 49; men = 29), ages 18 years and older, meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.) criteria for IED, with equal numbers (n = 39 each) being randomized to the treatment group (TG) and wait-list (WL). Assessments were made at 1 week prior to therapy, immediately at posttreatment, and

The newly-introduced Brugia Rapid dipstick for filarial antibodies and ICT filarial antigen card test were used to confirm historical data on the distribution of lymphatic filariasis in the Republic of Timor-Leste. Twelve out of thirteen districts were confirmed as being endemic. Brugian filariasis predominates, with an average prevalence of 11.6%. The average prevalence of Bancroftian filariasis was 1.1%. The study demonstrated that the Brugia Rapid test can provide useful information about the distribution of Brugian filariasis in circumstances where it is difficult or impossible to obtain n

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) including Ascaris lumbricoides, Necator americanus, Ancylostoma spp. and Trichuris trichiura are cause of significant global morbidity. To mitigate their disease burden, at-risk groups in endemic regions receive periodic mass drug administration using anthelmintics, most commonly albendazole and mebendazole. Assessing the efficacy of anthelmintic drugs is important for confirming that these regimens are working effectively and that drug resistance has not emerged. In this study we aimed to characterise the therapeutic efficacy of albendazole agains

INTRODUCTION: Women in conflict-affected countries are at risk of mental disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. No studies have investigated the association between experiences of abuse and injustice and explosive anger amongst women in these settings, and the impact of anger on women's health, family relationships and ability to participate in development.
METHODS: A mixed methods study including an epidemiological survey (n = 1513, 92.6% response) and qualitative interviews (n = 77) was conducted in Timor-Leste. The indices measured included Intermittent Explosive D

BACKGROUND: There is growing research interest in understanding and analyzing explosive forms of anger. General epidemiological studies have focused on the DSM-IV category of Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED), while refugee and post-conflict research have used culturally-based indices of explosive anger. The aim of this study was to test the convergence of a culturally-sensitive community measure of explosive anger with a structured clinical interview diagnosis of IED in Timor-Leste, a country with a history of significant mass violence and displacement.
METHODS: A double-blind clinical c

Violence against women or gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant public health issue facing women and girls in different settings. It is reported to have worsened globally during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on increased violence against women in general, which has been reported in many settings globally, there is a paucity of evidence of its impact on violence against highly vulnerable women living with HIV or tuberculosis (TB). Using a qualitative design, this study aimed to explore the views and experiences of women living with HIV (n = 19) or TB

INTRODUCTION: Historic disruption in health infrastructure combined with data from a recent vaccine coverage survey suggests there are likely significant immunity gaps to vaccine preventable diseases and high risk of outbreaks in Timor-Leste. Community-based serological surveillance is an important tool to augment understanding of population-level immunity achieved through vaccine coverage and/or derived from prior infection.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This national population-representative serosurvey will take a three-stage cluster sample and aims to include 5600 individuals above 1 year of age.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) predominantly affect resource-poor communities with poor access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure. Understanding the risk factors for STH infections can help inform public health control strategies, including WASH interventions and preventive chemotherapy. In this school-based cross-sectional study, mixed-effects logistic regression was used to examine the associations between WASH and socioeconomic factors and STH infections in Timor-Leste. Two statistical analyses were conducted: the first included individual-level sanitation and hygien

There is little evidence on prevalence or risk factors for soil transmitted helminth infections in Timor-Leste. This study describes the epidemiology, water, sanitation and hygiene, and socioeconomic risk factors of STH and intestinal protozoa amongst communities in Manufahi District, Timor-Leste. As part of a cluster randomised controlled trial, a baseline cross-sectional survey was conducted across 18 villages, with data from six additional villages. Stool samples were assessed for soil transmitted helminth and protozoal infections using quantitative PCR (qPCR) and questionnaires administere

There is growing acknowledgment that research in the postconflict field needs to include a focus on social conditions. The authors applied structural equation modeling to epidemiologic data obtained from postconflict Timor-Leste, to examine for links involving potentially traumatic events and sociodemographic factors (age, gender, educational levels, and unemployment) with psychological symptoms and functioning. Exposure to trauma and lack of education emerged as most relevant with psychological distress impacting on education in the urban area. Age and gender exerted influences at different p

BACKGROUND: Serosurveillance can be used to assess population immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). This study aimed to determine seroprevalence of four VPDs across Timor-Leste and identify immunity gaps.
METHODS: A population-representative three-stage cluster random sample of census-enumerated households were visited between October 2021 and February 2023. Occupants aged above one year were tested for measles immunoglobulin G (IgG), rubella IgG, hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb), hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb) and severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) IgG, using

Water, sanitation and hygiene interventions have been advocated as important complements to deworming programs to improve soil-transmitted helminth control. Evidence for the impact of water, sanitation and hygiene on soil-transmitted helminth infections is mixed, and based mainly on cross-sectional studies. In this study, we assessed associations between individual- and household-level water, sanitation and hygiene variables and soil-transmitted helminth infections, using data collected during the 2 year follow-up study period of the WASH for WORMS randomised controlled trial in Timor-Leste. Timor Leste is one of the top countries in Asia with a high incidence rate of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). The success of TB treatment necessitated a more profound comprehension of adherence as a multifaceted behavioral issue, along with identifying the barriers that hinder and the factors that promote patient adherence. This study aimed to assess the rate of pulmonary TB medication adherence and identify its predictors among adults in Metinaro and Becora, Dili, Timor-Leste. A descriptive analytical cross-sectional study was conducted, and new patients with pulmonary TB aged 18 years and above

We report on the presence of the ixodid tick Amblyomma helvolum on three species of reptiles from Timor-Leste. Among a total of 21 host specimens (lizards: 18 four-fingered skinks, Carlia sp. 'Meleotegi' and two forest skinks, Sphenomorphus sp. 'Meleotegi'; snake: one Coelognathus subradiatus) four were parasitized by ticks. Whereas nymphs were associated with the lizards, an adult male was retrieved from the snake. This report is the first of A. helvolum for Timor-Leste, the first for the skink genera Carlia and Sphenomorphus, and the first for C. subradiatus. We present a comprehensive table
