Tinea capitis mimicking dissecting cellulitis in three children.

Tinea capitis mimicking dissecting cellulitis is a rare presentation, and there is a paucity of information regarding this presentation in the literature. Three children 10-14 years of age who presented with an unusual clinical manifestation of tinea capitis that clinically resembled dissecting cellulitis are reported. The patients were treated with systemic antifungals for 3-4 months. Treatment success was measured according to repeat fungal cultures and clinical assessment of hair regrowth at follow-up visits. All three patients had resolution of infection, with negative repeat fungal cultur

Inflammatory tinea capitis: kerion, dermatophytic granuloma, and mycetoma.

Inflammatory tinea capitis is the result of a hypersensitivity reaction to a dermatophytic infection. The usual forms are favus, kerion celsi, dermatophytic Majocchi granuloma, and mycetoma. Inflammatory tinea capitis can be caused by Microsporum canis, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T tonsurans, T rubrum, and M gypseum. Histopathologic findings include a spectrum from mild suppurative folliculitis to dense granulomatous infiltrates. In mycetoma, grains must be present.

A 21-day-old boy with an annular eruption. Tinea faciei / Tinea capitis.

A healthy 21-day-old black male was referred to pediatric dermatology for evaluation of a facial and scalp eruption that had been present for less than 1 week. The child's parents had applied a topical corticosteroid cream for several days without any improvement noted. The child was otherwise well and thriving. Review of systems was negative. Family history was unremarkable for autoimmune or infectious skin diseases. On physical examination the patient was alert, active, and vigorous. He had multiple 1 to 2.5-cm erythematous annular, scaly plaques with pustules on the periphery on his upper c

[Tinea unguium with Microsporum langeronii and Trichophyton soudanense revealing tinea capitis with M. langeronii].

A Senegalese lady of 17 years old presented right hand tinea unguium on all fingernails except the thumb lasting for 10 years. Mycological analysis showed with the direct examination 20% KOH mount numerous septate hyphae. Culture revealed Microsporum langeronii at a first time. The mycological analysis resumption with sampling scalp revealed a tinea capitis with M. langeronii then culture of nail pieces confirmed in a second time M. langeronii also associated with Trichophyton soudanense in the tinea unguium.

Tinea capitis and tinea corporis with a severe inflammatory response due to Trichophyton tonsurans.

Trichophyton tonsurans is an anthropophilic dermatophyte, with a worldwide distribution, although its prevalence varies considerably between different geographical regions. Whereas in North America infections due to this fungus are exceptionally common, on the European continent they appear relatively seldom. Although T. tonsurans is primarily associated with tinea capitis, it can also be the cause of tinea corporis and tinea unguium. The course of infection is usually only mildly symptomatic. We describe here two cases of urease-positive T. tonsurans infections with atypically extensive cutan

Paediatric Tinea Capitis in New Zealand: A Case Series.

We reviewed 41 children referred to a New Zealand regional dermatology service between 2016 and 2026 with scalp alopecia suspected to be tinea capitis. Microsporum canis accounted for 17 of the 24 dermatophytes isolated (71%), a distribution consistent with New Zealand series over the past seven decades and unlike the shift towards anthropophilic Trichophyton reported from North America and the United Kingdom. A scalp scraping had been taken before referral in only 14 of the 41 children (34%). The species was never established in 16 children. Most were treated with an oral antifungal (31 of 41

Microsporum canis-Induced Tinea Capitis: A Rapid Screening Algorithm.

Tinea capitis is a common fungal infection of the scalp, primarily affecting children, and caused by fungi like Trichophyton and Microsporum. Its pathogenesis is influenced by both host-specific and environmental factors, resulting in various clinical presentations including hair loss and scaling of the scalp. We present the case of an eight-year-old male with tinea capitis, characterized by itching and hair loss in the occipital area. Examination revealed characteristic findings on trichoscopy, and direct examination of hair confirmed parasitization. Treatment with terbinafine was initiated,

Laboratory monitoring during antifungal treatment of paediatric tinea capitis.

Griseofulvin and terbinafine are considered effective first-line therapies for tinea capitis (TC). Haematological dyscrasias and hepatic injury are possible adverse effects with both drugs. There is a debate in the literature regarding the necessity of laboratory monitoring during griseofulvin and terbinafine treatment. We aimed at assessing the prevalence and severity of haematological and hepatic laboratory test abnormalities in a paediatric cohort of African immigrants in Tel-Aviv with TC who were treated with Terbinafine or Griseofulvin. We conducted a retrospective study of all TC cases d

Adult tinea capitis due to Trichophyton violaceum in China.

Tinea capitis is rare in adults. We report a case of adult tinea capitis due to Trichophyton violaceum in China. The female patient was immunosuppressed with prednisone due to the underlying disease of vulgaris pemphigus and was treated successfully with terbinafine. We also reviewed published cases of adult tinea capitis in China and compared these data with the characteristics of published cases in other regions in the world.

Tinea capitis in adult women masquerading as bacterial pyoderma.

Tinea capitis is generally thought to be a common disease in children but not in adults. Adults with tinea capitis generally present with scale and alopecia. We report 3 adults with inflammatory tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton tonsurans that resembled a bacterial infection. Of these patients, 2 were initially given a diagnosis of bacterial pyoderma. All patients were successfully treated with oral antifungal agents. One patient had significant eosinophilia that resolved with treatment. We conclude that tinea capitis should remain in the differential diagnosis of adults with alopecia and p

Tinea capitis update: a continuing conflict with an old adversary.

Infection with tinea capitis in childhood is a common, age-old problem that continues to plague patients and their families. As is true for most infectious diseases, the epidemiology of tinea capitis is in a constant state of flux and varies considerably with respect to geography and specific patient populations. Trichophyton tonsurans is now the most common cause of tinea capitis in the United States. A recent epidemiologic observation is a striking increase in the incidence of tinea capitis, particularly among African-Americans. Clinical studies over the past decade that have investigated th

Incidence of dermatophytosis in Jordan with special reference to tinea capitis.

Clinical data on 1068 cases of dermatophytosis as well as mycological data on 382 of these cases seen from March 1983 to September 1984 are reported. Tinea cruris was present in 34.1%, with Trichophyton rubrum and Epidermophyton floccosum isolated from 31% and 25% respectively. Tinea corporis was found in 17.9% of all patients of dermatophytosis with T. tonsurans responsible in 30.8%. Tinea pedis and Tinea unguium were present in 7.2% and 2% respectively, T. rubrum being the main causative agent; nail involvement was present in 27.3% of these cases. Tinea capitis was observed in 38.7% of 1068

[Tinea capitis in adults and adolescents. A note on 8 cases].

We have studied five cases of "Tinea capitis" in adults and two in young people (13 years old). All the adults cases and one of the young people were female. The causative fungi have been: "T. violaceum" in four patients; "T. mentagrophytes", var. granulosum, "T. mentagrophytes", var. vellosa and "T. tonsurans", in each of the others three, respectively. The clinical features in one case was similar to a seborrheic dermatites with a resaciform "Tinea faciei"; three other cases were suggestive of cronic imptigo contagiosa and even of favus impetigoid; still other one was mimicking a pseudopelad

[Child with inflammatory tinea capitis after visiting a barbershop].

We report the case of a 9-year-old boy presenting with inflammatory tinea capitis (kerion celsi) after repeated visits to a barbershop. Trichophyton tonsurans was identified by fungal culture, while Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus spp. were detected as accompanying microorganisms. The infection was considered highly likely to be barbershop-associated, most probably resulting from inadequately reprocessed hair-cutting or shaving instruments. An initial misdiagnosis as dermatitis, followed by treatment with topical hydrocortisone, was associated with further clinical progression. This case

Scabies with Secondary Infection Resembling Kerion-Type Tinea Capitis.

Scabies is an infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis. The clinical picture can vary and in children, scabies occurs in locations that are not usually found in adults. Complications can occur due to secondary impetiginization of scabies lesions. We presented a case of 8-year-old boy with painful red lumps, pus discharge, and alopecia on the back of the head since 2 weeks ago. Dermatological examination revealed multiple erythematous nodules with sinuses in the scalp of the parieto-occipital area and alopecia. Through microscopic examination we found the Sarcoptes scabiei m

Tinea capitis due to Trichophyton soudanense mimicking bacterial folliculitis.

We report the case of a 36-year-old Senegalese male with non-scarring alopecia of the scalp, including nodules and pustules, diagnosed as tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton soudanense. This dermatophyte is endemic in Central Africa and is becoming more frequent in Europe because of immigration. It has seldom been isolated in Italy. Tinea capitis is common in childhood and it is rare in adults, in which female sex is preferred. In adults, alopecic patches have to be distinguished from those due to other dermatoses inducing alopecia.

[Tinea capitis. Therapeutic options in the post-griseofulvin era].

Tinea capitis is the most common dermatophyte infection during childhood. In Germany, only griseofulvin is approved for therapy by regulatory agencies. In recent years, several newer antifungal agents such as itraconazole, fluconazole and terbinafine have broadened the therapeutic armamentarium and are used for the treatment of childhood tinea capitis. Itraconazole and terbinafine seem to be equally or more effective in treatment of tinea capitis within a shorter period of time than griseofulvin. Fluconazole is probably also effective for this indication, although supporting data is limited. E
