This narrative article on coping with tinnitus has four primary objectives. First, theoretical perspectives about defining and categorizing coping are discussed. Second, an overview of the empirical research on coping with tinnitus is provided, focusing on how coping with tinnitus has been measured and on the trends that were found in research on coping with tinnitus. Third, the problems related to the current state of research on coping with tinnitus are highlighted. Fourth, suggestions are provided on ways that researchers can improve research on coping with tinnitus.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tinnitus, the perception of sound in the absence of a corresponding external acoustic stimulus, is a highly prevalent and frequently severely impairing disorder with worldwide impact. In this article after a short overview about epidemiology and pathophysiology the currently available treatment options will be discussed with specific consideration of the available evidence, their mechanisms of action and their limitations.
RECENT FINDINGS: During the last decades, advances in neuroimaging methods and the development of animal models have contributed to an increasing underst

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus and headache are frequent disorders. Here, we aimed to investigate whether the occurrence of headache among tinnitus patients is purely coincidental or whether tinnitus and headache are pathophysiologically linked. We investigated a large sample of patients with tinnitus and headache to estimate prevalence rates of different headache forms, to determine the relationship between tinnitus laterality and headache laterality, and to explore the relationship between tinnitus and headache over time.
METHOD: Patients who presented at a tertiary referral center because of tinnitu

Tinnitus and unspecific auditory hallucinations generally known as acoasms arise from identical or at least similar cerebral structures. Both phenomena can be interpreted as signs of an over activation of neuronal networks. Several pieces of evidence to underline this hypothesis as well as its implications are discussed. It is even speculated that both clinical entities might profit from treatment strategies that are normally employed for treatment of the other.

Tinnitus has many similarities with the symptoms of neurological disorders such as paresthesia and central neuropathic pain. There is considerable evidence that the symptoms and signs of some forms of tinnitus and central neuropathic pain are caused by functional changes in specific parts of the central nervous system and that these changes are caused by expression of neural plasticity. The changes in the auditory nervous system that cause tinnitus and the changes in the somatosensory systems that cause central neuropathic pain may have been initiated from the periphery, i.e. the ear or the au

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of corresponding external sound(s). Tinnitus can be perceived in one or both ears or in the head. It is usually described as an unpleasant noise, but in some patients it takes the form of a ringing, buzzing, hissing, humming, or whistling sound, or as ticking, clicking, roaring, tunes, songs, or beeping. It is estimated that 1 out of every 5 people experience some degree of tinnitus. Tinnitus is not itself a disease but an unwelcome symptom. It can be accompanied by audiometric evidence of deafness which occurs in association with both conduct

The generation of tinnitus is a topic of much scientific enquiry. This chapter reviews possible mechanisms of tinnitus, whilst noting that the heterogeneity observed within the human population with distressing tinnitus means that there may be many different mechanisms by which tinnitus can occur. Indeed, multiple mechanisms may be at work within one individual. The role of the cochlea in tinnitus is considered, and in particular the concept of discordant damage between inner and outer hair cells is described. Biochemical models of tinnitus pertaining to the cochlea and the central auditory pa

Fifty patients with otosclerosis and tinnitus were studied for the course of the tinnitus after stapes surgery. Tinnitus disappeared in 64% of the cases, improved in 16%, was unchanged in 14%, and worsened in 6%. The reduction in tinnitus was more favorable after a small fenestra stapedotomy than after a partial stapedectomy with removal of the posterior half of the footplate. An unfavorable postoperative course of tinnitus did not appear to be linked to the postoperative audiometric result. In our study the subjective evaluation of pitch and loudness of the tinnitus did not provide significan

The study of a disorder such as tinnitus is fraught with difficulties. Tinnitus, like pain, is a subjective symptom. The problem is compounded because several different mechanisms must operate to cause the persistent sensation of tinnitus. Therefore, it is difficult to measure objectively any improvements in the condition. For example, it has been reported previously that sectioning the eighth cranial nerve does not abolish tinnitus in a majority of patients; therefore, central mechanisms must act to preserve the tinnitus. Finally, we know that tinnitus can occur in a host of conditions other

We report the case of a 69-year-old man with major depressive disorder and occupational tinnitus; both problems were refractory to several different treatment modalities, but were successfully treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The tinnitus was present for 15-20 years, but had worsened during the 3 years before treatment, causing him significant distress. Extensive organic workup did not identify a treatable etiology for his symptoms. To date, he has been hospitalized four times due to depressive symptoms associated with tinnitus. He has received ECT each time, and has responded wel

The hypothesis is presented that certain forms of tinnitus are related to abnormal phase-locking of discharges in groups of auditory nerve fibers. Recent developments in auditory neurophysiology have shown that neural coding of the temporal pattern of sounds plays an important role in the analysis of complex sounds. In addition, it has been demonstrated that when some other cranial nerves are damaged, artificial synapses can occur between individual nerve fibers such that ephaptic transmission between nerve fibers is facilitated. Such "crosstalk" between auditory nerve fibers is assumed to res

The present database contains brain activity of subjective tinnitus sufferers at identifying their sound tinnitus. The main objective of this database is to provide spontaneous Electroencephalographic (EEG) activity at rest, and evoked EEG activity when tinnitus sufferers attempt to identify their sound tinnitus among 54 tinnitus sound examples. For the database, 37 volunteers were recruited: 15 ones without tinnitus (Control Group - CG), and 22 ones with tinnitus (Tinnitus Group - TG). For EEG recording, 30 channels were used to record two conditions: 1) basal condition, where the volunteer r

BACKGROUND: It is well accepted among clinicians that maskers and hearing aids combined with counseling are generally helpful to tinnitus patients, but there are few controlled studies exploring the efficacy of maskers alone to decrease the prominence of tinnitus.
PURPOSE: We investigated the benefit of maskers for patients with chronic, bothersome tinnitus.
RESEARCH DESIGN: Crossover single-participant design, where each participant served as their own control.
STUDY SAMPLE: 18 adults with subjective, nonpulsatile, sensorineural tinnitus.
INTERVENTION: Participants participated in two six

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), which is an adaptation therapy for tinnitus based on the neurophysiological model proposed by Jastreboff in 1990,consists of directive counseling and acoustic therapy with a tinnitus control instrument (TCI) or other devices. For the past 5 years, our hospital has administered TRT characterized by the use of a TCI.
METHOD: In this study, we reviewed the clinical course of patients with tinnitus who presented to our outpatient clinic for tinnitus and hearing loss during the 3-year period from April 2004 to March 2007 and underwent TRT with a TCI. A

Clinical services for tinnitus have expanded greatly since the "masking" method was introduced by Jack Vernon in the 1970s. According to PubMed, the number of peer-reviewed publications has increased dramatically since that time (seven with "tinnitus" in the title in 1975; 477 in 2023). With so much research and overall interest, it might be expected that tinnitus services have improved accordingly. In reality, there are many variations of treatment, but no one method has been shown to be more effective than any other. This diversity of methods is evident when researching "tinnitus" on the int

PURPOSE: Tinnitus frequently causes disability as it affects daily living, which is objectified using several tinnitus questionnaires. To what extent they cover domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is currently unknown. Therefore, this study aims to investigate which ICF domains are measured by two questionnaires and to describe the health status of somatic tinnitus patients in ICF terms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All questions of the Tinnitus Questionnaire (TQ) and Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) were linked to the ICF using linking rules. A co

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence of tinnitus and tinnitus-related hearing loss in individuals with temporomandibular joint disorders.
METHODS: In the study, 288 patients with temporomandibular joint complaints and 33 patients with both temporomandibular and tinnitus complaints were evaluated. The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory was used in the evaluation of tinnitus. Pure tone audiometry test was used to evaluate the presence and degree of hearing loss. The Student's t-test and Independent Sample t-test were applied to compare between groups.
RESULTS: The incidence of tinnitus was found to be

The most significant otologic symptoms, consisting of ear pain, tinnitus, dizziness, hearing loss and auricolar "fullness", generally arise within the auditory system, often are associated with extra auricolar disorders, particularly disorder of the temporo-mandibular joint. In our study we examined a sample of 200 consecutive patients who had experienced severe disabling symptom. The patiens came to maxillofacial specialist assessment for temporomandibular disorder. Each patient was assessed by a detailed anamnestic and clinical temporomandibular joint examination and they are divided into fi

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to compare treatment outcomes for chronic bothersome tinnitus after Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) versus standard of care treatment (SC) and to determine the longevity of the effect over an 18-month period.
STUDY DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial comparing TRT to SC for chronic tinnitus.
METHODS: Adults with subjective, stable, bothersome chronic tinnitus associated with hearing loss amenable to aural rehabilitation with hearing aids were recruited. The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) was the primary outcome measure and the Tinnitus Functional

People with tinnitus report anecdotal difficulties in mental concentration and psychological treatments for tinnitus advise on concentration difficulties and how to manage them. Yet the literature lacks any coherent discussion about what precise theoretical cognitive constructs might be mediating reported concentration problems. This review addresses this gap by describing and critically appraising the behavioural evidence for the effects of tinnitus on cognitive performance (namely working memory and attention). Empirical evidence is somewhat limited, but there is some support that tinnitus i
