Design This study is a monocentre cohort study with a primary aim to assess the five-year survival of alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) implants (Metoxit AG, Thayngen, Switzerland). Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of the most commonly used pharmaceutical excipients. It is widely used as a white pigment in tablet and pellet coatings. Yellow nail syndrome is characterized by nail changes, respiratory disorders, and lymphedema. In a yellow nail patient with a skeletal titanium implant and with gold in her teeth, we found high levels of titanium in nail clippings. OBJECTIVES: This study was carried out to investigate the potential of titanium to induce hypersensitivity in patients chronically exposed to titanium-based dental or endoprosthetic implants.
METHODS: Fifty-six patients who had developed clinical symptoms after receiving titanium-based implants were tested in the optimized lymphocyte transformation test MELISA against 10 metals including titanium. Out of 56 patients, 54 were patch-tested with titanium as well as with other metals. The implants were removed in 54 patients (2 declined explantation), and 15 patients were retested in MELISA.

OBJECTIVE: Intact-canal-wall mastoidectomy procedures leave an unsightly depression in the postauricular area. Until now, there have been few reports of successful reconstruction of mastoidectomy defects, and none using titanium mesh. When secondary mastoidectomy is not anticipated, as in endolymphatic sac shunt procedures, the postauricular defect resulting from mastoidectomy can be eliminated by reconstruction using titanium mesh. BACKGROUND: The failure of cricothyroid approximation in male-to-female-transsexuals--as described by Isshiki--is often caused by suture cutting through the cartilage early postoperatively. At this stage there is no stabilized scarring and the previously approximated edges of the cartilage can drift apart, lowering the voice pitch through reduction of the tension of the vocal cords. The cartilage can be protected from cutting injuries of the wire sutures by using mini plates made of either titanium or LactoSorb. The present study examined the influence of the different materials on the result.

During the past several decades, the standard of care for orbital reconstruction after trauma has been autogenous bone grafts. Complications of bone grafts, including donor site morbidities such as scar alopecia and graft resorption with delayed enophthalmos, have inspired an interest in the use of alloplastic substitutes such as titanium. The aim of this study was to analyse the types of facial fractures that caused severe enophthalmos and the outcome after repair of the medial wall and the floor of the orbit with titanium mesh. The introduction of a formyl group at the ketone position is valuable in organic synthesis, and existing methods often rely on multistep procedures and strong bases. Herein, we report a direct deoxygenative formylation of ketones, enabled by a newly developed, cost-effective titanium reagent, (iPrO)2Ti(bpy)Cl2. This readily accessible reagent demonstrates high selectivity for ketone-DMF coupling, effectively suppressing traditional carbonyl coupling between ketones and/or aldehydes. This method provides a base-free alternative for converting diverse ketones into aldehydes.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate reconstruction of the posterior canal wall, including the mastoid cavity after canal wall-down cholesteatoma removal.
METHODS: A titanium mesh metal cage was used to rebuild the posterior auditory canal wall and mastoid cell system in 12 patients undergoing cholesteatoma removal. The cage was then covered with pieces of cartilage to reconstruct the soft tissue surface.

A growing number of theories has evolved attempting to explain the process of dental implant failure. Titanium implants utilized outside of the mouth have exhibited breakdown through a foreign body reaction. Phenomena occurring in the body, such as passive dissolution, osteolysis and metallosis, have not been discussed relative to dental implants. The dental community must consider the full spectrum of implant interactions within the body to understand the differences and similarities within the mouth.

PURPOSE: This case illustrates a pulp tissue-induced dentointegration of a titanium implant.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One commercially available titanium implant with a sand-blasted and acid-etched surface was placed in the maxilla of a foxhound where the palatinal root of the previously (i.e., 8 weeks) removed first molar was unintentionally retained.
