Despite considerable progress, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. To address the considerable health and economic burden of tobacco use, the development of improved tobacco control and treatment interventions is critical. By combining elements of economics and psychology, behavioral economics provides a framework for novel solutions to treat smokers who have failed to quit with traditional smoking cessation interventions. The full range of behavioral economic principles, however, have not been widely utilized in the realm of tobacco control and treatme

Despite decades of public health initiatives, tobacco use remains the leading known preventable cause of death in the United States. Clinicians have a proven, positive effect on patients' ability to quit, and pharmacists are strategically positioned to assist patients with quitting. The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy recognizes health promotion and disease prevention as a key educational outcome; as such, tobacco cessation education should be a required component of pharmacy curricula to ensure that all pharmacy graduates possess the requisite evidence-based knowledge and skills

OBJECTIVES: This study describes state legislators' knowledge, attitudes, and voting intentions with regard to tobacco-related issues.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of state legislators was conducted in North Carolina, Texas, and Vermont in 1994.
RESULTS: Most legislators agreed that secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer in nonsmokers, and a majority believed that smokers are addicted to nicotine. More than 75% stated that they would support a measure to enforce laws preventing tobacco sales to youth. A majority of Texas and Vermont legislators supported an increase in the state cigaret

The work reported here examined the effects of smoking cigarettes made predominantly of dark tobacco, alcohol consumption, and coffee drinking upon the risk of developing cancers of the bladder, larynx, lung, and oral cavity/hypopharynx in Medellín, Colombia. For this purpose 439 subjects with newly diagnosed cancers at the indicated sites were selected. Each subject was then matched by age, sex, and socioeconomic status with at least one control. Data from interviews with the selected subjects, upon analysis, showed both the intensity and duration of cigarette smoking to be statistically sign

BACKGROUND: Tobacco industry denormalisation is a key strategy recommended by the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control as it is associated with reducing smoking behaviours and positively influencing public and policymakers' opinion towards tobacco control. However, studies of awareness of tobacco industry tactics among public health players and policymakers in low-income and middle-income countries are limited.
METHODS: We conducted an online survey of individuals who had been involved in tobacco control in Thailand. Multivariate ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to determi

Aims: In 2014, in response to evidence that Canada’s tobacco use would lead, inexorably, to substantial morbidity and mortality for the foreseeable future, a group of experts convened to consider the development of a “Tobacco Endgame” for Canada. The “Tobacco Endgame” defines a time frame in which to eliminate structural, political, and social dynamics that sustain tobacco use, leading to improved population health. Strategies: A series of Background Papers describing possible measures that could contribute to the creation of a comprehensive endgame strategy for Canada was prepared in advance

BACKGROUND: While tobacco taxes and smoke-free air regulations have significantly decreased tobacco use, tobacco-related illness accounts for hundreds of thousands of annual deaths. Experts are considering additional strategies to further reduce tobacco consumption.
METHODS: We investigated smokers' (n=2118) and non-smokers' (n=2210) opinions on existing and theoretical strategies, including tax and retailer-based strategies in New York City, across three cross-sectional surveys.
RESULTS: Compared with smokers, non-smokers were significantly more likely (p<0.05) to favour all tobacco control

OBJECTIVES: To study the MPOWER measures over time (GATS-1 vs GATS-2) and their effects on tobacco control indicators in India.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The study used a cross-sectional design to compare the common questions identified from GATS-1 and GATS-2. Odds ratios for various MPOWER measures were estimated using a multivariate logistic regression model.
RESULTS: Compared with GATS-1, the current any tobacco use was reduced by 32% in females and 17% in males in GATS-2 (M-measures). The P-measures have reduced across the survey periods. Under O-measures, compared with mixed users, only

"Tobacco harm reduction" is defined as a method to minimize harm and risk of death and disease without eliminating tobacco and nicotine use. In Japan, where heated tobacco products (HTPs) are prevalent, the tobacco industry is progressively endorsing the concept of "tobacco harm reduction." Therefore, stakeholders in tobacco control must urgently share perspectives and experiences surrounding this issue. This discussion paper aimed to propose four requirements for effectively implementing "tobacco harm reduction" as a public health measure: (1) disease risk reduction, (2) cigarette smoking ces

BACKGROUND: Many smokers admitted for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are not given smoking cessation medications at discharge. The reasons behind this are unclear, and may reflect an interplay of patient characteristics, health disparities, and the receipt of inpatient tobacco control processes.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess potential disparities in treatment for tobacco use following discharge for COPD, examined in the context of inpatient tobacco control processes.
PARTICIPANTS: Smokers aged ≥ 40 years, admitted for treatment of a COPD exacerbation within the VA Veterans Int

With substance abuse, harm reduction refers to reducing or replacing use of a harmful product with a less risky agent. But many advertised "non-pharmaceutical" harm reduction alternatives for tobacco smoking are problematic. Studies have revealed inconclusive results using agents including chewing tobacco and e-cigarettes to quit smoking and have demonstrated continued use of these agents. Many smoking harm reduction agents pose other health risks not found in traditional tobacco smoking. Given these limitations, efforts should focus on promoting nicotine replacement therapy, and other pharmac

Healthy China 2030 aims to reduce the adult smoking rate from 27.7% in 2015 to 20% by 2030. Achieving this goal requires a review of the tobacco control measures introduced in China to date, the gaps that remain and the opportunities ahead. In 2008, the World Health Organization introduced six measures to reduce demand for tobacco called MPOWER. The progress China has made in implementing these measure varies: 1) monitor tobacco use and prevention policies. The surveillance on tobacco use has been rigorous, but the monitoring and evaluation of tobacco control policies needs to be strengthened;

We investigated whether changes in perinatal outcomes occurred following introduction of key tobacco control policies in the Netherlands: smoke-free legislation in workplaces plus a tobacco tax increase and mass media campaign (January-February 2004); and extension of the smoke-free law to the hospitality industry, accompanied by another tax increase and mass media campaign (July 2008). This was a national quasi-experimental study using Netherlands Perinatal Registry data (2000-2011; registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02189265). Primary outcome measures were: perinatal mortality, preterm birt

BACKGROUND: Smoking is thought to produce an appetite-suppressing effect by many smokers. Thus, the fear of body weight gain often outweighs the perception of health benefits associated with smoking cessation, particularly in adolescents. We examined whether the tobacco industry played a role in appetite and body weight control related to smoking and smoking cessation.
METHODS: We performed a systematic search within the archives of six major US and UK tobacco companies (American Tobacco, Philip Morris, RJ Reynolds, Lorillard, Brown & Williamson and British American Tobacco) that were Defenda

BACKGROUND: India has established a strong policy framework to curb tobacco use-a significant risk factor for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)-by enforcing Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003 and ratifying WHO-Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC) 2003. Within this regulatory context, India's tobacco companies have diversified business activities and adopted brand extension and other promotional strategies. This exploratory study examines these diversification and surrogate marketing practices and their relevance to tobacco control policy implementation and NCD p
