Pharmacotherapy for Treatment of Tobacco Use Disorder.

Tobacco use disorder (TUD), the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States, disproportionally impacts those with psychiatric disorders. There are multiple first-line, U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved pharmacotherapy options for the treatment of TUD. The current review focuses on these medications, underlining practical tips to improve cessation rates, while emphasizing a harm reduction and patient-centered approach to treatment. [Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services, 61(11), 6-9.].

Update on new forms of tobacco use.

Smoking remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Because of its clear influence on cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, it is an important factor in internal medicine consultations. Although the rate of smoking cessation has been increasing in recent years, there is a percentage of patients who continue to smoke because they are unable or unwilling to quit, despite having tried existing pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. For this group of patients there are strategies based on interventions aimed at reducing the negative effects of smoking without the

Oral health consequences of smokeless tobacco use.

Smokeless tobacco (SLT) use has many oral effects including oral cancer, leukoplakia and erythroplakia, oral submucous fibrosis (if mixed with areca nut), loss of periodontal support (recession) and staining of teeth and composite restorations. This review was aimed to provide information to identify oral lesions that occur due to the use of smokeless tobacco so that effective interventions can be undertaken to reduce morbidity and mortality from the use of SLT.

Tobacco and alcohol use disorders: Evaluating multimorbidity.

There is growing interest in applying the multimorbidity model for mental health disorders - i.e. the interactive effects of co-occurring diagnoses. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and tobacco use disorder (TUD) often occur together, but distinctive correlates of their co-occurrence have not been studied. Veterans treated by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) nationally in FY 2012 with diagnoses of both AUD and TUD were compared to those with only AUD or only TUD on socio-environmental factors, medical and psychiatric diagnoses, and service use. Multimorbid effects were defined as those in wh

Dual use of tobacco among Bangladeshi men.

INTRODUCTION: Dual use of tobacco (using smoking and smokeless forms) in Bangladesh is uncommon in women but common in men. Dual users are at additional risk of cancers and heart diseases compared with a single form of tobacco use. Knowledge about their socioeconomic background is necessary for planning appropriate interventions. We report here socioeconomic background of the dual users of tobacco from a nationally representative survey. METHODS: The study adopted a probability proportionate to size sampling technic of divisional population stratified into urban and rural areas to recruit men

[Why limit the use of tobacco products?].

The scientific evidence strongly shows that there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke. It is indisputable that the only effective way to protect the population from the harmful effects of SHS is a 100% smoke-free environment. Implemented legal regulations of countries and regions that have already implemented a smoke-free policy were not only feasible, but also well received. They have only positive effects on all sectors, especially in regard to health - actual reduction in heart attacks and respiratory illnesses. In accordance with the positive experiences and scientifically substa

Tobacco use in youth with mental illnesses.

Despite an abundance of literature documenting the prevalence and dangers of youth tobacco use, there is a relative dearth of literature in the area of effective cessation treatments for youth (Fiore et al. in Clinical tobacco guideline: treating tobacco use and dependence, 2008). Additionally, although it has been widely accepted that mental illness is highly correlated with tobacco use and dependence, little research has been done to support prevention and cessation efforts for youth with mental illnesses. This paper summarizes the literature on tobacco use and cessation in youth, with a foc

Tobacco use and comorbidity in bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To compare comorbid psychopathology and substance use among women with bulimia nervosa (BN) based on smoking status. METHOD: Forty women diagnosed with BN (20 smokers, 20 nonsmokers) completed written self-report measures of depressive symptoms, substance use, and alcohol abuse. RESULTS: Smokers reported more symptoms of depression and alcohol abuse and were more likely to use alcohol than nonsmokers, whereas caffeine consumption did not significantly differ between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Smokers with BN may represent a distinct subtype characterized by high rates of comorbi

Tobacco use increases susceptibility to bacterial infection.

Active smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke are at increased risk of bacterial infection. Tobacco smoke exposure increases susceptibility to respiratory tract infections, including tuberculosis, pneumonia and Legionnaires disease; bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea; Helicobacter pylori infection; periodontitis; meningitis; otitis media; and post-surgical and nosocomial infections. Tobacco smoke compromises the anti-bacterial function of leukocytes, including neutrophils, monocytes, T cells and B cells, providing a mechanistic explan

Factors affecting American Indian adolescent tobacco use.

The present study merged problem behavior and social ecological theories to examine how mental health and environmental factors, including culture, were associated with American Indian youth tobacco use. A stratified random sample of 205 reservation and 196 urban American Indian adolescents living in a Southwestern area was interviewed in 2001. Two-thirds of the reservation youth and half of the urban youth in this sample reported lifetime tobacco use. Logistic regression showed that, when controlling for age and location, a mental health factor (substance abuse/dependence) and environmental f

Impact of tobacco use on periodontal status.

This article reviews the effects of smoked and smokeless tobacco on periodontal status, including the impact of smoking on periodontal therapy and potential mechanisms for the adverse effects of tobacco on the periodontium. Approximately half of periodontitis cases have been attributed to either current or former smoking. Both cigar and cigarette smokers have significantly greater loss of bone height than nonsmokers, and there is a trend for pipe smokers to have more bone loss than nonsmokers. Unlike smokers, who experience widespread periodontal destruction, the most prevalent effects of smok

Perinatal complications associated with maternal tobacco use.

The use of tobacco products by pregnant women is associated with placenta previa, abruptio placentae, premature rupture of the membranes, preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction and sudden infant death syndrome. Approximately 15-20% of women smoke during pregnancy. It has been suggested that smoking is responsible for 15% of all preterm births, 20-30% of all infants of low birthweight, and a 150% increase in overall perinatal mortality. Cigarette smoking is one of the most important and modifiable risk factors associated with adverse perinatal outcomes.

Oral leukoplakia and adolescent smokeless tobacco use.

The recent increase in smokeless tobacco (ST) use has prompted investigators to assess the health effects of ST use. This study attempted to evaluate the prevalence of oral leukoplakia among adolescent users and to determine factors associated with its presence. During their annual physical examination, 1116 teenaged football players (567 black, 546 white) answered a 34-question survey and received an oral screening examination. Results indicated that 0.5% of nonusers, 1.5% of previous users, and 13% of current users had clinically evident oral leukoplakia. Factors statistically associated wit

Stakeholder Perspectives on Community Tobacco Use and the Implementation of Tobacco Use Treatment in Eastern Ethiopia: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Smoking tobacco causes over 8 million deaths annually and is the leading cause of non-communicable diseases globally. In Eastern Ethiopia, tobacco use is culturally ingrained, often combined with alcohol and khat use. This study explores stakeholders' experiences addressing tobacco use in the region, aiming to identify obstacles and opportunities for implementing telephone counseling as an evidence-based strategy to support tobacco cessation. METHODS: This is a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured, face-to-face qualitative interviews to gather data from March - Apri

A pilot study of ketamine among individuals with tobacco use disorder: tolerability and initial impact on tobacco use outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: There is increasing evidence of ketamine's therapeutic potential in reducing substance use in individuals with substance use disorders. However, its effects on tobacco use disorder are unknown. We investigated the effect of a subanesthetic dose of ketamine on tobacco use. METHODS: This randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, pilot study administered intravenous ketamine to individuals with tobacco use disorder recruited from the local community. Participants were randomized to receive either ketamine (0.5 mg/kg) (n = 6) or saline placebo (n = 4) over 20 min. Primary outcomes

The interaction of tobacco retailer density and rurality with tobacco use prevalence in Kentucky.

PURPOSE: Tobacco retailer density is a key correlate of tobacco use prevalence in the United States, but this relationship has typically been examined in urban areas. We examined the relationship between retailer density and tobacco use across Kentucky counties, a state with high smoking rates and a substantial rural population. METHODS: We obtained a list of tobacco retailers from the 2021 Kentucky Synar program, used for minor's access inspections. We merged these data with county-level prevalence estimates for cigarette and smokeless tobacco use for each county in Kentucky, calculated usin
