Using evidence-based educational strategies to increase knowledge and skills in tobacco cessation.

To meet the demand for improved patient outcomes and accountability for healthcare delivery, nurses must embrace a culture of evidence-based practice (EBP). Integrating EBP for tobacco cessation in nursing practice is particularly important for the 44.5 million smokers in the United States who contribute to 157 billion dollars of healthcare costs annually. Unfortunately, studies reveal that healthcare providers are not aware of what is considered the best evidence, the United States Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence, resulting in missed oppo

Self-initiated tobacco cessation and substance use outcomes among adolescents entering substance use treatment in a managed care organization.

PURPOSE: Adolescents with substance use (SU) problems have high rates of tobacco use, yet SU treatment has historically ignored treatment for tobacco use. Barriers to such efforts include the belief that tobacco cessation could compromise other SU abstinence. This study examines self-initiated tobacco cessation and 12-month alcohol and drug abstinence in adolescents entering SU treatment in a private, managed care organization. RESULTS: Self-initiated tobacco cessation at 6 months, and at both 6 and 12 months, were related to higher odds of drug abstinence but not alcohol abstinence. CONCLUS

Methylation of the Oxytocin, Oxytocin Receptor, and Vasopressin Gene Promoters in Tobacco Use Disorder during Cessation.

INTRODUCTION: Vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OT) exert sex-specific effects on social pair bonding and stress reactions while also influencing craving in substance use disorders. In this regard, intranasal oxytocin (OT) and AVP antagonists present potential treatments for tobacco use disorder (TUD). Since transcription of both hormones is also regulated by gene methylation, we hypothesized sex-specific changes in methylation levels of the AVP, OT, and OT receptor (OXTR) gene during nicotine withdrawal. METHODS: The study population consisted of 49 smokers (29 males, 20 females) and 51 health

Tobacco use by adolescents: the role of the oral health professional in evidence-based cessation programs.

The use of tobacco products, especially cigarette smoking, represents the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the developed world. In the United States, major gains have been made to reduce smoking among adults. Similar gains, however, have not been realized with adolescents. In recent years, substantial interest has been directed to tobacco cessation studies with adolescents. The previously limited interest in adolescent cessation programs was attributable in large part to the mistaken assumptions that: (1) adolescent tobacco users were not dependent on nicotine and could stop a

[PRETAGREF study: Prevalence of tobacco use and factors associated with smoking cessation in kidney transplant recipients].

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use increases the risk of mortality, cancers and cardiovascular diseases in transplanted patients. Transplanted patients are encouraged to quit tobacco use before and after renal transplantation. This study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence of tobacco consumption in transplanted patients in one French region. This survey was also conducted to identify factors associated with failure in smoking cessation. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A questionnaire was sent by mail to transplanted patients followed in our center between the 1/01/95 and the 31/12/10. A second mail was s

Biochemical Verification of Tobacco-Use as an Inclusion Criterion in Smoking Cessation Trials- Lessons From the Cessation of Smoking Trial in the Emergency Department.

INTRODUCTION: Biochemical verification of smoking status prior to recruitment into smoking cessation trials is widely used to confirm smoking status, most commonly using exhaled carbon monoxide (CO). There is variation in the level of CO used as a biochemical inclusion criterion, and thus the possibility for people reporting to be current smokers to be incorrectly excluded from trials. METHODS: As part of the Cessation of Smoking Trial in the Emergency Department, people attending the Emergency Department (ED) who reported being current daily smokers underwent CO testing to confirm eligibilit

Tobacco use in patients with ENT tumours: Deficits in the provision of education and smoking cessation support.

PURPOSE: Smoking is not only one of the main risk factors for the development of most malignant and numerous benign ENT tumours but also has an important influence on therapy and prognosis. Even quitting smoking at the time of diagnosis significantly reduces mortality. Patients have a particularly strong desire to stop smoking when they are diagnosed. The present study investigated to what extent patients were aware of the relationships between smoking and the development and prognosis of tumours and how much information and smoking cessation support they were offered by physicians. METHODS:

The lived experiences of tobacco use, dependence, and cessation: insights and perspectives of people with mental illness.

Even as the rate of smoking in the U.S. population overall has decreased dramatically during the last four decades, people with mental illness continue to use tobacco at alarmingly high rates. In the last two years, national initiatives have developed to address smoking within this population, yet there has not been an attempt to understand the perspectives of people with mental illness themselves regarding the role tobacco plays in their lives. This grounded theory study, based on focus group interviews with 26 individuals with various smoking statuses receiving outpatient mental health servi

The influence of sociodemographic, tobacco use, and mental health characteristics on treatment adherence among adults enrolled in a community-based tobacco cessation program.

BACKGROUND: While counseling and pharmacological interventions are known to facilitate smoking cessation, poor adherence can impact their effectiveness. Therefore, this study aimed to identify personal and clinical factors that influenced adherence to smoking cessation treatment among socioeconomically disadvantaged adult Oklahomans enrolled in a publicly available tobacco treatment program and observational research study. METHODS: Adult participants (N = 442) were enrolled in a community-based tobacco treatment program. Logistic regression models identified sociodemographic, mental health,

Post-discharge tobacco cessation rates among hospitalized US veterans with and without diabetes.

AIMS: Smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular complications among patients with diabetes. Hospitalization has been shown to enhance cessation rates. The purpose of this study was to compare 6-month post-hospitalization tobacco cessation rates among US veterans with and without diabetes. METHODS: This was a longitudinal study among inpatient veterans who used tobacco in the past month (n = 496). Patients were recruited and surveyed from three Midwestern Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals during an acute-care hospitalization. They were also asked to complete a follow-up survey 6

Perceptions of Prevention and Cessation Ads among US Youth Who Use Multiple Tobacco Products: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Around 30% of youth who use tobacco use multiple tobacco products (MTPs), yet little research has evaluated campaign ads to address youth MTP use. METHODS: We qualitatively examined how youth who use MTPs perceive tobacco prevention and cessation ads. Between February 2023 and January 2024, we held seven virtual focus groups with 30 US youth (ages 14-20 years) who reported using both e-cigarettes and a combustible tobacco product in the past 30 days. Participants were shown five static tobacco prevention and cessation ads that addressed single and MTPs. Participants were asked a

Tobacco Use Assessment and Cessation Medication Orders Among Primary Care Patients by Ethnicity, Sex, and Acculturation Indicators.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic men and women in the United States. Smoking rates vary among Hispanic subgroups, with higher rates among those with indicators (e.g., language preference, nativity) of greater acculturation. It is recommended that clinicians ask about tobacco use and provide cessation treatment, as warranted. While studies in health care settings note disparities in tobacco-related care by ethnicity and acculturation proxies, we are unaware of studies that have evaluated these relationships among adult patients within community-based hea

Co-morbid tobacco use disorder and depression: A re-evaluation of smoking cessation therapy in depressed smokers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To provide a critical evaluation of nicotine use disorder co-morbidity in persons with major depressive disorder (MDD) or its subsyndromal presentations. We focus on how a diagnosis of current or past MDD may shape access to smoking cessation therapy, and highlight the unique challenges that this group of smokers has to overcome to receive adequate treatment. METHODS: A literature search was performed using PubMed for studies published between January 1995 and March 2015 using the following keywords and combination of keywords (co-morbidity, co-occurrence, and dual-

Female smokers' perspectives on tobacco use and smoking cessation: a qualitative study guided by health belief model.

Tobacco use among women remains a significant public health concern. Although overall smoking prevalence has declined locally, the reduction among female smokers has been comparatively slower. Existing cessation strategies may not sufficiently address the unique factors shaping women's smoking behaviour. This study explored female smokers' perspectives on tobacco use and the factors influencing their cessation. A qualitative study was conducted between February 2024 to February 2025 in a primary care setting in Singapore. Semi-structured in-depth interviews (IDIs) were carried out with 14 fema

Simultaneous versus Sequential Cessation of Tobacco and Cannabis: Preferences of Young Adults Who Co-Use in France.

INTRODUCTION: Co-use of tobacco and cannabis is common among young adults and is associated with higher dependence and quitting difficulties. Little is known about the preference for simultaneous or sequential dual cessation in this population. We aimed to explore preferences for the timing of dual cessation and the methods most likely to be used by young adults who co-use. METHODS: Data came from an online nationwide cross-sectional survey of people co-using tobacco and cannabis in France. Preferences for the timing of dual cessation were modelled using binary logistic and multinomial regres
