The impact of cannabis co-use and cannabis use disorder on interest in and barriers to tobacco cessation.

BACKGROUND: Co-use of cannabis and tobacco is increasing, but its impact on smoking cessation is not completely understood. It is unclear whether any cannabis use, or only problematic use such as cannabis use disorder (CUD), impacts smoking cessation. METHOD: In 2023, we conducted an online, national survey of US adults (n = 2,271) currently smoking cigarettes. We examined the association of past 30-day cannabis use (divided into three groups: co-use with CUD, co-use without CUD, and no cannabis use) with outcomes that can impact smoking cessation: self-rated importance, readiness, and confid

Cannabis Co-Use and Endocannabinoid System Modulation in Tobacco Use Disorder: A Translational Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Tobacco use disorder (TUD) remains a leading cause of preventable mortality, and existing pharmacotherapies yield 12-month abstinence rates below 30%. As cannabis legalization expands, approximately 18-22% of people who use tobacco report concurrent cannabis use, yet the impact of co-use on cessation outcomes and the therapeutic potential of endocannabinoid system (ECS) modulation remain unclear. We conducted a translational systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searching Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, APA PsycInfo, and Web of Science through January 2026 (PROSPERO: CRD4

Electrophysiological correlates of resisting craving in adults with tobacco use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use disorder (TUD) is the largest premature cause of death in the world. While most adults with TUD have attempted to quit, only less than 10% quit for at least 6 months. Craving is one of the main causes of smoking relapses. Event-related potentials (ERPs) have been extensively studied using cue-provoked paradigms. However, little is known about ERPs related to resisting craving, which seems important to investigate since such activity might represent treatment targets to promote smoking cessation. AIMS: The goal of this work was to investigate the ERP correlates of resis

Barriers to treatment of alcohol and tobacco use disorders in industrial workers.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are common among industrial workers and often lead to higher absenteeism and lower productivity. Multiple factors may be responsible for hindering the treatment of SUDs among industrial workers. OBJECTIVE: The study was planned to assess the barriers to treatment of SUDs among workers employed in organized industries and factories. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study done at a tertiary care hospital associated with medical college in Delhi NCR. A total of 200 participants presenting to medicine outpatient department for the t

Tobacco and Cannabis Use Disorders: Similarities, Differences and Therapeutic Approaches.

Cannabis and tobacco are two of the most commonly used drugs worldwide. Both drugs can lead to a use disorder, characterized by compulsive use despite harm and mediated by neurobiological changes in reward and motivational circuitry. Co-use of cannabis and tobacco is common and influences disorder severity and outcomes. Both cannabis use disorder (CUD) and tobacco use disorder (TUD) share key features, such as dopaminergic reward system involvement, severity of withdrawal symptoms, and mental health comorbidities, yet they differ in neurobiological pathways, diagnostic profiles, and available

Impact of tobacco use on the symptoms of painful temporomandibular joint disorders.

This study examines the relationship between the severity of painful temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) symptoms and current tobacco use in patients evaluated at a specialized orofacial pain clinic. Medical records, including responses to the Chronic Pain Grading Scale (CPGS), from 606 consecutive patients evaluated at the Mayo Clinic orofacial pain clinic with TMD by RDC-TMD criteria were retrospectively reviewed. Univariate analyses were performed comparing tobacco users and non-users. Analysis of covariance and multiple logistic regression models were used to adjust for demographic var

Persistent tobacco use during pregnancy and the likelihood of psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the association between psychiatric disorders and tobacco use during pregnancy. METHODS: Data were derived from a population-based cohort of 744 pregnant African American and White low-income women living in urban and rural areas. The Diagnostic Interview Schedule was used to assess women for 20 different psychiatric disorders. RESULTS: In comparison with nonusers, persistent tobacco users (women who had used tobacco after confirmation of their pregnancy) and nonpersistent users (women who had used tobacco but not after pregnancy confirmation) were 2.5 and 2 times as

Association between psychiatric disorders and the progression of tobacco use behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the progression of tobacco use and the patterns of comorbidity of tobacco use and psychiatric disorders. METHOD: The authors conducted analyses of prospective and retrospective reports, collected from 1988 to 1998, of a sample of high- and low-risk youths identified on the basis of the presence or absence of a parental history of substance abuse or dependence. RESULTS: A parental history of substance use disorders was associated with regular tobacco use and nicotine dependence, but not with experimentation for all youths. Tobacco Use, Use Disorders, and Smoking Cessation Interventions in Persons Living With HIV.

Cigarette smoking remains highly prevalent among persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), estimated to be 40-75 %, and is significantly higher than what is observed among the general population. Health risks of smoking in this population include cardiovascular disease; bacterial pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other respiratory conditions; lung cancer and other malignancies; adverse cognitive and neurological outcomes; low birth weight, preterm birth, and small-for-gestational-age infants; and overall mortality. Smokers with HIV now lose more life years to

Tobacco treatment billing and tobacco use disorder diagnosis in healthcare settings in the United States: an analysis of South Carolina medicaid claims.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use, particularly smoking, remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. While Medicaid in all states provides some coverage of tobacco cessation treatments, rates of tobacco use remain much higher among Medicaid beneficiaries (30.0%) compared to those with private insurance (18.0%). The extent to which Medicaid beneficiaries receive cessation counseling services remains unclear. The current study assessed tobacco counseling occurrence among individuals who use tobacco among South Carolina Medicaid fee-for-service beneficiaries from 2019 to 2022. MET

Tobacco smoking and other substance use disorders associated with recurrent suicide attempts in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Suicide attempts (SA) are more frequent in bipolar disorder (BD) than in most other mental disorders. Prevention strategies would benefit from identifying the risk factors of SA recurrence in BD. Substance use disorders (SUD) (including tobacco-related) are strongly associated with both BD and SA, however, their specific role for the recurrence of SA in BD remains inadequately investigated. Thus, we tested if tobacco smoking - with or without other SUDs - was independently associated with recurrent SA in BD. METHODS: 916 patients from France and Norway with ascertained diagnoses o

A Preliminary Study of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Cannabis Use Disorder and Its Effects on Concurrent Tobacco Use.

OBJECTIVES: Tobacco and cannabis co-use is common, and reductions in one substance may theoretically lead to compensatory increases in the other. This secondary analysis examined whether cannabis cue-induced dorsolateral prefrontal cortex repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (DLPFC-rTMS) affects tobacco consumption among tobacco-using individuals with cannabis use disorder (CUD). METHODS: Data were analyzed from a randomized, sham-controlled trial of DLPFC-rTMS for CUD. Participants were treatment-seeking adults with moderate or severe CUD who reported baseline tobacco use. Associations of tobacco cigarette use and dependence with substance use disorder treatment completion by sex/gender and race/ethnicity.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) are approximately five times more likely to smoke cigarettes than the general population. Individuals who smoke cigarettes have greater odds of SUD relapse compared to individuals who do not smoke cigarettes, but we know little about how cigarette use is related to SUD treatment completion overall by sex/gender or race/ethnicity. METHODS: This study examined 2855 adults (71.98 % male; >70 % racial/ethnic minority) in outpatient and residential SUD treatment at a New York-based treatment agency over a six-month period in 2018. How tobacco use disorder affects gray matter aberrance: The mediating effect of glymphatic system function.

BACKGROUND: The glymphatic system (GS) represents a newly identified biological pathway, but its possible involvement in the pathophysiology of tobacco use disorder (TUD) remains unclear. We aimed to assess the GS function in TUD individuals and to establish the connections among GS, brain structure and clinical features of disease. METHODS: We recruited 149 male subjects, including 92 TUD individuals and 57 controls, then obtained their 3D-T1 weighted image scans, diffusion tensor image scans and clinical scales. Diffusion tensor imaging along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index was calc

Determinants of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Efficacy in Tobacco Use Disorder: A Pre-Registered Study.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a promising treatment for tobacco use disorder (TUD). Although at a group level, active stimulation outperforms sham, at an individual level, variability exists in clinical response. The behavioral and neurobiological factors that differentiate those who respond to rTMS from those who do not remain unclear. To explore individual factors that influence acute responses to rTMS, N = 60 human participants received one session of rTMS to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and to a control region (visual cortex; V5) in a randomized order

Text Message (SMS) Microlearning for Tobacco Use Disorder: Pre-Post Pilot Study of Clinician Confidence.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians are central to treating tobacco use disorder, yet practical training is inconsistent, and confidence varies. Brief, text message-based microlearning may offer a low-burden way to strengthen foundational competencies in busy clinical settings. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to evaluate whether a short SMS microlearning series improves clinicians' self-reported confidence in managing tobacco use disorder. METHODS: We conducted a single-arm, pre-post educational pilot at an academic medical center. A brief formative survey (13 items; 106 respondents) identified local knowledg

Addressing Tobacco Use Disorder in Individuals With Mental Health Disorders: The Critical Role of Nurses.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with mental health disorders tend to smoke more frequently and intensely than the general population; however, smoking cessation efforts are still often neglected in mental health care. METHODS: This position paper advocates for creating a more prominent role for mental health nurses in assisting individuals with severe psychiatric disorders to quit smoking. RESULTS: Given their extensive patient contact and holistic care approach, mental health nurses are uniquely positioned to lead smoking cessation initiatives. Consequently, there is an urgent need for increased
