Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor (ECMT) is a rare benign neoplasm arising in the tongue. With only 45 cases reported in the literature, there are several unique features defining this lesion. Firstly, almost all patients present with an asymptomatic slow growing mass on the anterior dorsum of the tongue. At the microscopic level, it is recognizable as a well-circumscribed unencapsulated proliferation of uniform round to fusiform cells embedded in a chondromyxoid matrix. Lastly, the immunohistochemistry profile is characterised by positivity for glial fibrillary acidic protein and frequent p

We describe the cytogenetic findings in a moderately differentiated primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the base of the tongue. The only karyotypic abnormality found in the primary culture of this neoplasm was trisomy 5. This finding is remarkably different from previous cytogenetic studies of mucoepidermoid carcinomas, which have shown heterogeneous and unrelated chromosomal aberrations. Our results suggest that trisomy 5 may be an early aberration in the development of this neoplasm.

The recently described hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma of salivary tissues joins other clinicopathologic entities in its segregation from the formerly nondescript and heterogeneous classification "clear cell neoplasms." The carcinoma is preponderantly an intraoral (palate and base of tongue) neoplasm that is always infiltrative and capable of regional lymph node metastasis. To date, it has responded to locoregional control treatments and has not been life-consuming.

In the assessment of the head and neck, differential diagnoses can be formulated by subdividing the anatomy into spaces along identifiable and logical boundaries. In the oral cavity, the root of the tongue is notably unlike adjacent regions due to structural and tissue-specific differences. The majority of lesions found in the root of the tongue are congenital and benign, representing ectopic tissues of thyroidal, epidermal, dermal, foregut, venous, and lymphatic origin. A greater number of acquired neoplasms and infections are seen in the adjacent sublingual, submandibular, and oropharyngeal

BACKGROUND: Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas are rare neoplasms usually arising from the salivary glands. There is limited evidence in the literature on their prognosis in the base of the tongue but other cases have resolved without recurrence.
METHODS: The patient underwent biopsies demonstrating the diagnosis of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the base of tongue and a PET scan showed multiple bilateral rounded pulmonary nodules.
RESULTS: The patient declined chemotherapy and radiotherapy to maximise his quality of life and passed away under management from palliative care several

β-Cryptoxanthin, a carotenoid, and hesperidin, a flavonoid, possess inhibitory effects on carcinogenesis in several tissues. We recently have prepared a pulp (CHRP) and citrus juices (MJ2 and MJ5) from a satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Mar.) juice (MJ). They contain high amounts of β-cryptoxanthin and hesperidin. We have demonstrated that CHRP and/or MJs inhibit chemically induced rat colon, rat tongue, and mouse lung tumorigenesis. Gavage with CHRP resulted in an increase of activities of detoxifying enzymes in the liver, colon, and tongue rats'. CHRP and MJs were also able to suppress the ex

Osteomas are benign bony neoplasms commonly found in long bones and in the skull and facial bones. Osseous growths within soft tissue structures of the head and neck are rare. Review of the English literature reveals only 31 cases of osteomas within the soft tissues of the tongue and 2 in the buccal mucosa. We report on a patient with a bony hard asymptomatic mass at the base of the tongue, which was found to be an osteoma by biopsy. Complete removal was declined by the patient. There was no progression during a six-month period of follow-up.

A 14-year-old girl developed a firm mass at the base of the tongue. Computed tomography indicated marked density suggesting either a foreign body or bony tissue. A thyroid scan confirmed the presence of a normally sized and positioned gland. The mass was removed in toto and found to be an osteoma. This is the first report of a case in which the diagnosis of this rare developmental lesion of the tongue was achieved preoperatively based on clinical and radiologic information. This experience should lead to greater awareness of this entity in the future. Recognition of this entity in the pediatri

Papillary cystadenoma is an unusual benign cystic neoplasm with cystic spaces of diverse sizes and intraluminal papillary projections histologically, which is commonly seen in the lips, cheek and palate. We report a case of papillary cystadenoma in a 40-year-old man on the anterior one-third of the tongue with classical histological features. The paper highlights the rarity of the site of occurrence with emphasis on differential diagnosis and the need for considering papillary cystadenoma when benign cystic lesions are encountered in the anterior one-third of the tongue.

Hemangioma is a vascular neoplasm and one of the most common benign tumors. The pathogenesis of hemangioma has not been fully understood. CIZ1 (Cip1-interacting zinc finger protein 1) is a nuclear protein and the binding partner of p21. Dysregulation of CIZ1 expression has been reported in various types of cancerous tissues. In this study, we examined CIZ1 expression in hemangioma of the tongue and explored its function in vascular endothelial cells, the proliferative cell type in hemangioma. Immunohistochemistry showed that CIZ1 was highly expressed in hemangioma of the tongue while its expre

Distant metastasis of malignant neoplasm to the oral soft tissue is extremely rare. We report a case of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) metastasizing to the tongue. A 47-year-old man visited our hospital with chief complaint of a lump on the middle third of the dorsum of his tongue and the lesion fell off from the tongue. Although histopathological diagnosis of the mass was granuloma teleangiectaticum, similar nodule reappeared in the same area 2 weeks later. The second lesion was composed of granuloma teleangiectaticum and aggregation of neoplastic clear cells in ductal arrangement. The clear cell

Lipoma, a benign tumor of adipose tissue is one of the most common benign neoplasms of the body. However, its occurrence in oral cavity is very rare. It accounts for 1 to 4% of benign neoplasms of mouth affecting predominantly the buccal mucosa, floor of mouth and tongue. We report three cases of intraoral lipoma, two in buccal mucosa and one in labial mucosa. An excisional biopsy was performed and histopathological examination revealed proliferation of mature adipocytes arranged in lobules and separated by fibrous septa. After 3 years follow up, the patients showed no signs of recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are benign soft tissue neoplasms of mature adipose tissue commonly occurring in the trunk or extremities. But, intraoral lipomas are rare entities which may be only noticed during routine dental examinations. Especially intramuscular lipomas on the tongue have been reported very rarely. In this study, we report a case of intramuscular lipoma on tongue, with a review of the literature from 1978 to 2019, providing data on age, gender, location, presenting symptoms, size, surgical methods, and recurrence.

BACKGROUND Isolated unilateral hypoglossal nerve injury is extremely rare. It may be caused by radiation therapy targeting neoplasms of the cephalic region. CASE REPORT A 51-year-old man with synovial sarcoma of the left upper arm status post extensive radiation therapy in 1980 presented in late 2014 with gradual onset of speech difficulty and difficulty moving his tongue for a couple of weeks. Neurological examination revealed isolated left-sided unilateral tongue atrophy. Postradiation residual extensive cicatrix with erythema over the whole left upper extremity extending to the neck on the

BACKGROUND: Lymphomas are malignant neoplasms of the lymphocyte cell lines affecting the lymph nodes, spleen and other nonhemopoietic tissues. Of the extranodal lymphomas found in the head and neck region, 3-5% of malignant lymphomas arise in the oral and paraoral region, mainly from Waldeyer's ring. The involvement of the base of the tongue is extremely rare.
SUMMARISED CASE: Case 1: 64 year old female who presented initially with an enlarged occipital lymph node which gradually became generalized cervical lymphadenopathy with initial histology confirmed reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. Biopsy

A case report is communicated on lymphoepithelial hyperplasia of the tonsil at the base of the tongue. This may be demonstrated during radiological double contrast examination of the oesophagus as a protrusion of the mucosa of the hypopharynx with smooth or nodular relief pattern. Differential diagnosis is necessary especially against malignant neoplasms.

Angiomyomas of the oral cavity are rare benign vascular neoplasms. In particular, the congenital form has not been reported before in the English language literature. We present a congenital angiomyoma of the tongue that was found on the posterior middle of the tongue in an infant. On MRI, the mass showed an isointense signal to muscle on the T₁ weighted image and a slightly hyperintense signal on the T₂ weighted image. Immunohistochemically, tumour cells were positive to desmin and smooth muscle actin, but negative to vimentin and S100. The treatment was surgical excision and no recurrence wa

Lipomas are benign soft tissue neoplasm which rarely occur in the oral cavity. Of the total reported cases of lipoma, only about 15% to 20% of cases have occurred in the head and neck region and the tongue is an even rarer site with only about 4% of the reported cases occurring in that region. They are slow growing and usually asymptomatic in nature. When it grows to a large size, it can hinder the physiological processes that are associated with the area. This case report describes the diagnostic features of tongue lipoma with a brief review of literature.

The glomus tumour is a rare neoplasm derived from the glomus apparatus. Subungual sites are most common with only three published cases involving the dorsal tongue. To our knowledge, this is the first case of an intraoral malignant glomus tumour (glomangiosarcoma) to be published in English literature. We report a case of a single glomus tumour located on the posterior dorsal tongue of a middle-aged man, which was surgically excised. Immunohistological features were indicative of a glomus tumour; however, in this case, malignant features were also discovered, warranting re-excision.

Cytogenetic analysis of a synovial sarcoma of the base of the tongue showed a reciprocal translocation involving chromosomes X and 18 [t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2)]. This is a translocation recently reported to be characteristic of synovial sarcomas of the extremities. The histogenesis of synovial sarcoma is controversial. Our discovery of this translocation in an oral synovial sarcoma confirms the unity of origin of this neoplasm with the far more common synovial sarcomas of the extremity. Karyotypic analysis may prove useful in confirming the diagnosis of this uncommon neoplasm.
