Predictors of complications associated with unerupted maxillary canines: a cone beam computed tomography study.

To detect predictive factors for the occurrence of complications associated with unerupted maxillary canines (C). A total of 83 cone beam computed tomograms (CBCT), made from November 1, 2021 to October 31, 2022, have met the inclusion criteria, whereby 110 unerupted C were detected. Independent variables were: gender, age, and C position. Outcome variables were detected complications: external root resorption (ERR) and dilaceration of adjacent tooth, ERR and dilaceration of C, dentigerous cyst, canine ankylosis, and adjacent teeth malposition. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis

Central odontogenic fibroma, hyperplastic dental follicle, or dentigerous cyst? A diagnostic dilemma: A case report.

Central odontogenic fibroma (COF) is an extremely rare benign odontogenic tumor, which is associated with an unerupted tooth in one-third of the cases. Hyperplastic dental follicle (HDF) is an odontogenic hamartomatous lesion associated with delayed or tooth eruption failure in young patients. Dentigerous cyst (DC) is an epithelial-lined developmental cyst surrounding the crown of an unerupted or impacted tooth. Here, we present a case of 13-year-old boy with pericoronal radiolucency around impacted right maxillary canine tooth, which detected during routine dental examination on panoramic rad

Treatment of an "ankylosed" upper central incisor in the mixed dentition.

A ten-year-old boy presented with an unerupted upper right central incisor (UR1). An OPG radiograph showed a supernumerary tooth lying over its crown, preventing its eruption. Standard orthodontic treatment involving removal of the supernumerary tooth, attaching a gold chain to the UR1 and treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances failed to bring the tooth down, until it was found that tough fibrous gingival tissue entwined in the gold chain had "ankylosed" the tooth. Once this tissue had been removed and the wound packed open, the tooth was brought down successfully into occlusion.

Clinical, radiographic, and histologic presentation of fibrodentinosarcoma.

A general dental practitioner should be familiar with certain rare odontogenic entities like fibrodentinosarcoma, which can occur with unerupted or impacted teeth. The knowledge of such rare pathologies usually associated with unerupted/ impacted teeth aids in the early recognition and correct management of these entities, which are often asymptomatic. One such rare, diverse tumor is ameloblastic fibrodentinosarcoma (AFDS), characterized only by sporadic case reports in the literature. It is important to describe the features of this odontogenic entity to general dental practitioners for succe

Measurement of the permeability of dental enamel and its variation with depth using an electrochemical method.

To investigate the permeability of the dental enamel of erupted and unerupted human pre-molars and its variation with depth, we determined the resistivity of successive 100-micron-thick layers. The electrical resistance of halved tooth crowns at zero Hertz, which according to Scholberg et al. (1982, 1984) is inversely related to the permeability, was measured before and after removal of successive enamel layers from the outer surface toward the dentino-enamel junction (D.E.J.). The resistivity of the successive enamel layers increased from the D.E.J. toward the outer surface in approximately t

Failure of tooth eruption involving a mandibular primary first molar: a case report.

PURPOSE: Primary failure of tooth eruption involving primary teeth is unusual. The purpose of this report was to describe uneruption of a single mandibular primary first molar and the treatment outcome following limited orthodontic care. METHODS: A 5-year, 3-month-old boy was referred to the authors' clinic for treatment of an unerupted primary first molar, 3 months after fenestration by an oral surgeon. Orthodontic traction was performed on the affected molar in the authors' clinic. The affected mandibular primary first molar was fully erupted and in occlusion 16 months after the first fenes

Impaired tooth eruption: a review.

Eruption is the continuous process of movement of a tooth from its developmental location inside the jaw to its functional location in the mouth. Impaired tooth eruption, where this process is disturbed, is common in dental practice. It may manifest either as delayed or complete absence of eruption. Although unerupted teeth are usually asymptomatic, they may cause cosmetic and pathologic complications. The purpose of this article is to provide a review on the pathogenesis and differential radiographic interpretation of impaired tooth eruption.

Impacted teeth: Their place is in the dental arch.

The starting point for the treatment of unerupted teeth should consider the fact that, biologically, the pericoronal follicle maintains the ability to release EGF and other mediators responsible for eruption over time. The eruptive events may be guided and directed, so that teeth may occupy the space prepared to receive them in the dental arch, as showed in the case presented to evidence the following principle to be considered in these cases: "Regardless of the position of an unerupted tooth, it may be biologically directed to its place in the dental arch. The orthodontist should apply a mech

Impairment of tooth eruption. Pathogenetic aspects.

The genetically determined impairment of tooth eruption in 4 generations is analysed on the basis of an examination of 1 family, and the variability of the characteristic "tooth infraposition" is described. Starting with a 72-year-old female patient with 1 unerupted incisor, infrapositions of primary and permanent teeth in the descendants were diagnosed. We assume hereditary susceptibility resulting from a multifactorial genetic system to be the cause.

A conservative treatment of an involved molar tooth associated with dentigerous cyst: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts (DCs) are among the most frequently odontogenic cysts in young and middle-aged individuals. Marsupialization and enucleation are the main treatment options in clinical practice. However, there are few reports on preserving molars severely involved by the cyst. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old male patient with a large odontogenic cyst that was successfully treated using a multidisciplinary approach. The patient's chief complaint was discomfort during mastication in the lower left molar region for a month. Clinical examination revealed that teeth 36 and 37 were in

Relationship between enamel fluorosis severity and fluoride content.

OBJECTIVES: Enamel fluorosis is a hypomineralization caused by chronic exposure to high levels of fluoride during tooth development. Previous research on the relationship between enamel fluoride content and fluorosis severity has been equivocal. The current study aimed at comparing visually and histologically assessed fluorosis severity with enamel fluoride content. METHODS: Extracted teeth (n=112) were visually examined using the Thylstrup and Fejerskov Index for fluorosis. Eruption status of each tooth was noted. Teeth were cut into 100 μm slices to assess histological changes with polarize

Dentigerous cyst containing multiple impacted teeth: a rare case report.

The dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which apparently develops by accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth. It is one of the most prevalent types of odontogenic cysts associated with erupted, developing, or impacted tooth, particularly the mandibular third molars, the other teeth that are commonly affected are maxillary canines. The present case report is unique as it enclosed three permanent maxillary teeth: the central incisor, lateral incisor, and canine that had to be extracted during surgical enucleation of the

Spontaneous Eruption of Severely Impacted teeth: The Report of Two Cases.

The unerupted and impacted tooth is a common problem and the reason for many orthodontic and pediatric dental referrals, yet the approach to their management is still an area of controversy. This article presents two cases of severely impacted teeth that spontaneously erupted in the maxillary and mandibular arches. The first patient, a 9-year-old girl, presented a severe impaction of mandibular right and left second premolars. The second patient, a 7-year-old girl, presented with a severely impacted maxillary central incisor. In both cases, the teeth spontaneously erupted into excellent positi

Aberrant root formation: review of root genesis and three case reports.

The mechanism of root formation and tooth eruption is a complex process which is not fully understood. Prior to a tooth emerging into the oral cavity, root genesis is initiated by derivatives of the enamel organ. The dental follicle mediates an eruption pathway allowing for movement of the developing tooth in a coronal direction. As the tooth moves towards the oral cavity, root formation occurs passively in the resulting space. Failure of the enamel organ and dental follicle to properly coordinate may result in complications in the eruption process. This clinical report presents 3 cases of iso
