The association of severely worn dentition resulting from betel nut chewing with temporomandibular disorders: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Most studies support parafunctions play an important role in temporomandibular disorders (TMD), whereas the association between tooth wear and TMD remains controversial. Betel nut chewing as a parafunction is popular in South and Southeast Asia. We therefore investigated the association of severely worn dentition resulting from betel nut chewing with TMD. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 408 control participants (male: 380, female: 28, 43.62 ± 9.54 years) and 408 participants with betel nut chewing related severely worn dentition (male: 380, female: 28, 43.73 ± 8.93 years) w

Attrition, eruption, and the periodontium.

Features of natural masticatory function, of physiological attrition, both occlusal and approximal, and of continuing tooth eruption in adult life need to be borne in mind in considering how the chronic inflammatory periodontal diseases and dental caries have become so widespread. Evidence is reviewed showing that teeth continue to erupt in adulthood, that natural masticatory function prevented plaque accumulation at the approximal risk site of onset of both CIPDs and caries, that epithelial attachment to cementum may be physiological, and that periodontal attachment studies must be age-relate

Factors associated with tooth wear in a Swedish adult population: a cross‑sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear encompasses the loss of dental hard tissues through processes including attrition, abrasion and erosion. Previous studies have identified potential associations with age, sex, salivary characteristics, socioeconomic factors and bruxism; however, findings remain inconsistent and often based on single-factor analyses. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with tooth wear, with emphasis on subject‑based bruxism, and to evaluate the relative contribution of bruxism in relation to demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, and functional factors using a multivariate a

Micro-computed tomography of a 500-year-old tooth: technical note.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) could be used to reconstruct ancient dental anatomy accurately and differentiate the enamel from the dentin, as well as to verify whether micro-CT could detect tooth disorders such as attrition or caries accurately. METHODS: Micro-CT imaging was performed, using a cone-beam micro-CT specimen scanner, on a 500-year-old human tooth found in a burial jar in the Cardomom Mountains in southwestern Cambodia. RESULTS: The occlusal surface of the tooth showed marked attrition, with the dentin extending close to the enamel layer on

Functional dental occlusion: an anthropological perspective and implications for practice.

Physiologic changes occur in dental occlusion throughout life, resulting from the interplay between functional demands and reciprocating adaptive responses. These changes have been reported in the anthropological literature and they reflect evolutionary changes in the human stomatognathic system during the Paleolithic, hunter-gatherer period. Specific occlusal changes occur in response to different environments, leading to extensive variation within and between extinct and extant human populations. For example, functional demands can cause occlusal and interproximal tooth wear, resulting in sh

Effect of occlusal slope related to uneven attrition on root stress distribution and potential fracture.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Severely uneven occlusal attrition is thought to play an important role in the occurrence of spontaneous vertical root fracture (VRF), a frequent problem among Chinese people. This study evaluated the influence of occlusal slope related to uneven attrition on the root stress condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A finite element model of the mandibular first molar was established. Two different occlusal slope patterns were simulated in 5 models: (A) sound tooth, (B) 0.5-1.5 mm and (C) 2-3 mm attrition increased buccally, and (D) 0.5-1.5 mm and (E) 2-3 mm attrition increased di

The adaptive value of dental crowding: a consideration of the biologic basis of malocclusion.

Malocclusion, an ambiguous concept that refers to structural disharmony of the teeth and jaws, can be defined only in reference to normal occlusion. If normal occlusion is synonymous only with ideal occlusion, then normal occlusion becomes a rare occurrence. A biologically valid concept of normal occlusion includes a range of variation in the relevant occlusal variables that is compatible with health and unimpaired function. The difficulty in defining malocclusion is the determination of the point at which normal variation becomes abnormal. A clearer concept of malocclusion is obtained if the

Effectiveness of immediate dentine sealing and resin coating in reducing dental sensitivity in a child with idiopathic neuropathy and anterior dental attrition: Case report.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic neuropathy is a peripheral nervous system disorder of unknown etiology. Patients with this disorder often suffer from bruxism problems. Bruxism is defined as an oral parafunction characterized by occlusal contacts resulting from non-physiological, repetitive, and involuntary masticatory motor activities. These events can trigger accentuated wear of the tooth structure leading to sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity is the pain arising from the exposed dentin in response to chemical, thermal, tactile, or osmotic stimuli that cannot be explained as the result of any other dental

Oral tori are associated with local mechanical and systemic factors: a case-control study.

PURPOSE: To estimate if various dental factors, medications, and medical conditions are associated with an increased risk for the presence of oral tori. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a case-control study design, the investigators identified and adjudicated a sample of cases with torus palatinus (TP) and/or torus mandibularis (TM) during a 1.5-year period. The medical records were abstracted and data on dental factors, temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), medications, and medical conditions were recorded. Risk estimates were calculated as adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95% confidence interval

Dentinogenesis imperfecta in the Brandywine isolate (DI type III): clinical, radiologic, and scanning electron microscopic studies of the dentition.

Teeth of seven patients from the Brandywine isolate who had dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) type III were evaluated by clinical, radiologic, and scanning electron microscopic techniques. The deciduous and permanent teeth were opalescent, and there was marked attrition. Enamel pitting was present on some permanent teeth. Anterior open bites were found in all persons with complete permanent dentitions. Pulps of developing teeth were larger than normal during early development but rapidly became almost completely obliterated. There was increased constriction at the cementoenamel junctions. While r

Age-at-death estimation of pathological individuals: A complementary approach using teeth cementum annulations.

Bioarchaeologists rely on accurate estimations of age-at-death. Clearly, some pathological conditions are associated with gross morphological changes in the skeleton that could impact the effectiveness of age-at-death estimation (i.e. methods based on the pelvis, fourth rib, dental attrition, and cranial stenosis). The magnitude of this problem has not been widely studied due to a paucity of pathological skeletons of known age. We assessed age-at death for three individuals affected by bone dysplasias (achondroplasia, residual rickets, osteogenesis imperfecta) using cementum annulations and se

Characterization of transparent dentin in attrited teeth using optical coherence tomography.

Attrition and wear of tooth surface occur with aging and result in loss of enamel, with exposure and histological changes in dentin. Dealing with attrited teeth and restoration of the lost tissue are clinically challenging. The main objective of this study is to characterize the exposed transparent dentin in the occlusal surface of attrited teeth by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Naturally attrited, extracted human teeth with occlusal-transparent dentin were investigated in comparison to sound and carious teeth. The teeth were subjected to OCT imaging and then cross-sectioned and polished

Additional human remains from Blombos Cave, South Africa: (1999-2000 excavations).

The uppermost Middle Stone Age (MSA) layers at Blombos Cave contain high densities of Still Bay bifacial points. Information from other regional sites places the Still Bay prior to the Howiesons Poort industry, which has been dated at 65-70 ka. The Blombos Cave MSA strata have yielded nine human teeth or dental fragments. Four that were recovered during the 1997-1998 excavations have been published elsewhere. The remaining five were discovered during the 1999-2000 field seasons; these are described here. Three of the new specimens are deciduous teeth, and two are permanent premolar and molar c

Depressed eruption dental rate in rats with hemodynamically-mediated acute renal failure.

The effects of acute renal failure on the impeded (IER) and unimpeded (UER) eruption dental rate and attrition rate (AR) were investigated. Adult female Wistar rats were injected with 125 mg/kg b.w of human methemoglobin (M-Hb) in order to induce a first episode of hemodynamically-mediated acute renal failure (H-ARF). Ten days after the injection of M-Hb, other groups of rats received another equal dose of the drug in order to induce a second episode of H-ARF. A group of six animals was pair-fed daily and individually with rats of M-Hb groups. Evaluation of renal function, histopathology studi
