Introduction: Tooth enamel mineral loss is influenced by its solubility product value, which is fundamental to the understanding of de- and remineralization resulting from a carious or erosive challenge. Published pKsp values for human enamel and hydroxyapatite range from 110 to 126 suggesting a heterogeneous nature of enamel solubility. However, this range of values may also result from the variety of methods used, e.g., some authors reporting values for suspensions of enamel powder and others for bulk enamel. The aim of this study was to develop a method to measure the solubility of bulk hum

Phosphoprotein appears to play an important role in the mineralization of dentin during tooth development and remineralization after demineralization by dental caries. To better understand this role, we describe the extraction and characterization of phosphoprotein from immature, human root apex dentin during and after EDTA demineralization. The extraction procedure included dissociation of the demineralized dentin matrix by guanidine hydrochloride (Gdn.HCl) followed by subsequent digestion with cyanogen bromide (CNBr) and collagenase. Characterization of these extracts included 'Stains-All' s

OBJECTIVE: Dental caries is a prevalent chronic disease globally, arising from an imbalance between tooth remineralization and demineralization. Early detection of lesions is crucial, with non-invasive methods preferred in the initial stages of caries for enamel remineralization and demineralization prevention. This study aimed to assess the impact of varying contents of boron-doped hydroxyapatite-chitosan nano-composite on the microhardness of demineralized enamel.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Boron-doped hydroxyapatite-chitosan nano-composites at concentrations of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% were prepar

Chronic periodontitis is one of the most frequent and severe diseases involving the tooth. Untreated, they can lead to tooth loss. Our study involved 67 patients with chronic marginal periodontitis who underwent tooth extraction, of which 29 had moderate periodontal lesions and 38 severe periodontal lesions. The microscopic study of the dental pulp revealed significant changes in all patients. In patients with moderate periodontitis the pulp tissue was found to be the site of an enhanced process of collagenous fibrosis associated with a moderate inflammatory infiltrate, dystrophic mineralizati

Aspartate-serine-serine (DSS) repeats are abundant in naturally occurring proteins that are critical for tooth formation. We recently developed octuplet repeats of aspartate-serine-serine (8DSS) peptides to promote the nucleation of calcium phosphate carbonate from free ions. In this paper, we report a possible role of 8DSS in promoting mineral deposition onto human enamel. Human enamel specimens were demineralized, exposed briefly to 8DSS solution, and then exposed to simulated body fluid that favors mineral deposition. At various stages of treatment, nano-mechanical behaviors, namely, hardne

Dentin is a bone-like matrix that forms the bulk of the tooth. By fabricating dentin with protocols involving demineralization, sterilization, and preservation, treated dentin matrix (TDM)/demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) could be obtained, which is considered as a useful tool for bone and tooth-tissue regeneration. Non-negligible inflammatory and immune responses are reviewed in this article of autogenous, allogeneic, and xenogeneic TDM/DDM for the first time. Both autogenous and allogeneic TDM/DDM showed good biocompatibility in original and clinical studies, while a few cases reported the

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of a fluoride-containing aluminocalciumsilicate nanoparticle glass dispersed aqueous solution (Nanoseal) on enamel and dentin, under the hypothesis that this material can form insoluble mineral deposits that confer acid resistance to the tooth structure and occlude open dentin tubules.
METHODS: Labial enamel and dentin of human extracted incisors were used. Morphology of the enamel and dentin artificially demineralized with a lactic acid solution that before and/or after coated with the test material were analyzed with a wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectrosc

Intramuscular implantation of demineralized and lyophilized rat bone matrix and murine lower incisors into thigh muscles of BALB/c mice results in deposits of bone adjacent to the implants, a phenomenon termed as ectopic osteogenesis. The yield of induced bone does not critically depend on the mass of implanted matrices, and thus on the quantity of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) present in the implants. A positive correlation between bone matrix implant weight and the yield of induced bone was observed only 28 days post grafting, i.e. when endochondreal osteogenesis is completed and bone r

Recurrent caries is still considered the main reason restorations need to be replaced. There are different materials available now that promise to reduce the possibility of recurrent caries by releasing fluoride and inhibiting restoration marginal caries. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the demineralization inhibition potential of a non-fluoride-releasing resin (Z100TM 3M, St. Paul, MN, USA) and a glass containing resin-based composite (Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill, Ivoclar/Vivadent AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein), which contains fluoride. Class V preparations were placed on 22 prem

Dental caries is a site-specific disease that undergoes many cycles of demineralization and remineralization during lesion development. Because of its developmental characteristics dynamics, the caries lesion can be arrested and even repaired at its early stages without operative intervention by increasing the net mineral gain during the demineralization and remineralization cycles. This result can be accomplished by reducing the effect of etiological factors such as cariogenic biofilms and diet, and increasing the efficacy of remineralizing agents such as saliva and fluoride.

Metal fluoride preparations are promising in view of protection against dental erosion. The aim of this study was to screen the effect fluoride preparations containing various polyvalent metal cations had on erosion progression under increasingly severe erosive conditions in human enamel in vitro. Specimens were subjected to a cyclic de- and remineralisation procedure. Demineralisation (experiment E1 and E2a: 6 x 2 min/day, experiment E2b: 6 x 5 min/day) was performed with 0.05 M citric acid (pH 2.3). Fluoridation directly followed demineralisation and was reduced stepwise (E1: 6 x 2 min/day,

Head and neck cancer patients are prone to dental caries after radiotherapy. An ex-vivo study was conducted to assess the feasibility of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to detect tooth demineralization due to caries in irradiated teeth. Thirty-nine human molar teeth were subjected to caries lesion induction through irradiation (Group 1), pH cycling (Group 2-1), and both (Group 2-2). The OCT signal attenuation coefficient, µR was assessed and validated against microhardness test and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The µR for Group 1 increased from 10 Gy to 40 Gy, and subsequently decreas

PURPOSE: To qualitatively explore the effects of prescription-strength topical NaF pastes on patent tubules in a pH cycling model comprising remineralization and demineralization phases.
METHODS: 3 mm diameter dentin cores were extracted from bovine teeth, mounted in acrylic rods, ground and polished, and initially demineralized in 10 mL unstirred 50% citric acid (pH = 1.2) for 2 minutes to remove the smear layer and expose the dentin tubules. 72 acceptable specimens were then divided into six groups (12 per group) and subjected to a two-phase pH cycling study. The six pastes evaluated were a

Dental caries is a microbially mediated disease that can result in significant tooth structure degradation. Although the preponderance of lesions is treated by surgical intervention, various strategies have been developed for its noninvasive management. Here, we use a novel approach for noninvasive treatment based on killing Streptococcus mutans with high-frequency microwave energy (ME). The rationale for this approach is based on modulating the pH of caries to a physiological state to enable spontaneous tooth remineralization from exogenous sources. In the present study, after demonstrating t

PURPOSE: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) is characterized by subsurface demineralization and tooth substance loss with crater formation. Remineralization of subsurface demineralization has previously been demonstrated; however, repair of the eroded surface is still under investigation. This study investigated the effectiveness of mouthwashes containing hydrolyzed wheat protein (HWP) in repairing ETW through promotion of organized crystal growth.
METHODS: Enamel Erosion was created on 210 enamel blocks by 10-minute demineralization in 1% Citric Acid (pH 3.5). Then, blocks were randomly assigned to se

BACKGROUND: Initial carious lesions are reversible, and fluoride-containing reagents effectively promote enamel remineralization in these initial lesions. Numerous remineralizing agents are available, some containing fluoride and others containing alternatives because of fluoride toxicity concerns. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the following remineralizing agents: fluoride varnish (5% NaF, Duraphat®), casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate paste (CPP-ACP, Tooth Mousse®), and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride paste (CPP-ACPF, T

This study aimed to assess the relationship between Schneiderian membrane thickening and periapical pathology in a retrospective analysis of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images. For this, 147 CBCT scans containing 258 sinuses and 1,181 teeth were assessed. Discontinuation of the lamina dura, widening of the periodontal ligament space, apical periodontitis (AP), and partly demineralized maxillary sinus floor associated with AP were considered periapical pathology. Maxillary sinus mucosal thickening (MSMT) was classified as odontogenic or non-odontogenic. An irregular band with a focal t
