An acute apical abscess (AAA) is a rapid-onset inflammatory condition characterized by spontaneous pain, pus formation, and swelling, often resulting from pulp necrosis. Complications may include systemic manifestations and severe outcomes, such as tooth extrusion. This case report describes a rare instance of AAA causing rapid extrusion of a maxillary central incisor in a 17-year-old female. The patient presented with spontaneous pain and mobility of the extruded tooth, accompanied by localized swelling. Clinical and radiographic evaluations revealed pulp necrosis, an AAA, and apical bone rar

OBJECTIVES: The longevity of frictional telescopic crowns (FTC) in severely reduced dentitions with 1 to 3 remaining teeth per jaw has not yet been studied prospectively and exclusively. Aims of this study were to estimate risks of telescope loss and abutment tooth loss and to determine abutment tooth mobility over time.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: A total of 74 patients with severely reduced dentitions received 82 telescopic removable partial dentures (TRPDs) retained with 173 FTCs. Dentures were reexamined after 1 week and 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months. Tooth mobility was monitored with Per

The purpose of this article is to report a rare case of orthodontically induced external root resorption of a maxillary left central incisor with a large periapical radiolucency; it was treated successfully with a conservative approach that included the use of calcium hydroxide. The tooth was nonvital and had grade III mobility. It was treated endodontically for 2 years with an interim filling of calcium hydroxide mixed with propylene glycol. After 2 years, the postoperative intraoral periapical radiograph showed good periapical healing with complete resolution of periapical radiolucency. Ther

OBJECTIVE: A 3D finite element model of the mandibular second molar and its periodontal ligament (PDL) was designed to study the impact of different occlusal contact points on tooth mobility and to identify more stable occlusal contact patterns for precise clinical adjustments and prosthesis design. METHODS: A 300 N static load was applied vertically to the tooth’s occlusal surface. Two contact types were evaluated: cusp tip-fossa contact (Model 1) and cusp-fossa tripod contact (Model 2). The study focused on tooth mobility in 94 occlusal contact patterns. RESULTS: Increased contact points red

Longitudinal data of 50-yr-old men, followed for 10 yr, were analyzed to identify variables which may be associated with healthy tooth surface loss. Three types of longitudinal models were used, arriving at similar conclusions. Predictors of sound tooth surface loss with aging included pocket depth, mobility, and recession.

The response of the periodontal ligament is reviewed when single or repeated loads are applied to the tooth, as in mastication. A more nearly elastic recovery is produced with simulated chewing than is indicated by single semi-static applications of force. The resting position of the tooth between loadings changes with the time of day and recent loading history. An unstressed tooth extrudes at a variable rate. Soon after entry into the mouth, extrusion is a progressive feature, which manifests as eruption with consequent structural rearrangement of the periodontium. Rates of extrustion are sub

BACKGROUND/AIM: Clinical studies evaluating the splinting time for surgically extruded teeth with crown-root fractures are lacking. The aim of this study was to compare 2-week splinting versus functional splinting times after surgical extrusion.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Children aged 8-13 years who presented with crown-root fractures were included. Surgical extrusion was performed, and teeth were splinted either for 2 weeks or until normal Periotest values were achieved (functional splinting time). The outcome measures were tooth mobility, tooth loss, root resorption, marginal bone resorption an

In order to assess by periodontal evaluation the changes that might occur with time in the abutment teeth and periodontal tissues when Konus-Telescope dentures are used as that final treatment of periodontal disease, the dentures (15 units) were placed in 13 patients with missing tooth and periodontal disease and findings at the time of denture placement and 30 months after the placement were compared. The number of cases that exhibited significant changes in hygiene level, tissue inflammation and periodontal pocket depth of the abutment teeth after 30 months was very small, while as many as 8

The aim of this study was to investigate whether cervical wear was associated with occlusal wear and clinical periodontal parameters in relatively older adults. A total of 30 patients, with multiple non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and without a disease or condition that could cause heavy tooth wear, were included in the study. The periodontal parameters including plaque index, probing pocket depth, gingival recession (GR) and tooth mobility were obtained from 641 teeth of which 475 (74·1%) displayed NCCLs. The levels of cervical wear and occlusal wear were determined according to a tooth

Tooth autotransplantation is a viable treatment option for tooth replacement when a suitable donor tooth is available. These case reports described significant vertical bone growth after autotransplantation of a mature third molar. The left mandible third molars (n = 2) were transplanted to the missing tooth in the left mandible. The patient follow-up period was 10 years after transplantation. Clinical examination revealed no mobility of the transplanted tooth. Radiographic examination indicated that bone regeneration occurred around the transplanted tooth. Vertical bone growth was observed in

Intentional replantation is a process that involves purposeful tooth extraction and subsequent reinsertion of the removed tooth. Intentional replantation may be a therapeutic option worth considering to preserve the natural teeth and prevent tooth extraction, even though the success rate is not always high. Systemically healthy male patient was referred to our department. Diagnosis was chronic periodontitis and class III mobility was noted at the right maxillary central incisor with complete periodontal attachment loss. After phase I therapy periodontally involved tooth was extracted, endodont

Osseointegrated dental implants represent a successful treatment modality for partial and complete edentulism. However, concerns persist regarding their impact on adjacent natural teeth. Conflicting literature exists regarding complications such as caries, mobility, and fractures in neighboring teeth, with few studies comparing these effects with those observed in contralateral natural teeth. This retrospective study aimed to assess the impact of single posterior implant-supported rehabilitation on adjacent natural teeth compared to contralateral teeth. We retrospectively screened and analyzed

Autotransplantation of a tooth is probably the most natural method to replace a missing or lost tooth. This treatment has been performed successfully already for more than twenty years. The prognosis of a transplanted tooth is determined by tooth type, stage of root formation at the time of transplantation, surgical technique used, and duration and way of splinting. Determining the optimal stage of root formation of the tooth is very important in planning the autotransplantation. If the transplantation is carried out successfully, the transplanted tooth behaves at its new location just like be

Bruxism is an oral parafunctional activity. The more common symptoms are tooth grinding and tooth clenching; however, many other symptoms can be related to bruxism. Dentists treat the results of this condition which may include tooth wear, tooth mobility, tooth fracture, hypertrophy of masticatory muscles, head or neck ache, or poor sleep patterns. The etiology and pathophysiology of this disorder are still unclear. Anterior stop point appliances have been shown to be beneficial in the management of the signs and symptoms associated with bruxism, including nocturnal headaches in certain patien

OBJECTIVE: To identify probabilistic, sequential patterns of periodontal breakdown using sequential pattern mining (SPM) on a large longitudinal cohort.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Electronic health records from 19,428 patients with periodontitis (2011-2022) were analyzed. A custom SPM algorithm was developed to identify frequent temporal subsequences of tooth mobility and furcation involvement, enforcing strict temporal precedence. 'High-risk' states (eg, generalized clinical attachment loss [CAL] > 3.0 mm) were evaluated as precursors to localized failure. Association rules were ranked by confide
