Mandibular Distalisation for Tooth Wear in Patients Requiring Mandibular Protrusion for Sleep Apnoea.

BACKGROUND: Pathological tooth wear is an increasing concern and may require intervention and occlusal rehabilitation. Often the treatment includes distalisaton of the mandible to restore the dentition in centric relation. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is another condition treated my mandibular repositioning but in this case by an advancement appliance. The authors have a concern that there could be a group of patients with both conditions where distalisation for their tooth wear management would be contrary to their OSA treatment. This paper aims to look at this potential risk. METHODS: A l

Erosive tooth wear inhibition by hybrid coatings with encapsulated fluoride and stannous ions.

This study aimed to formulate a hybrid coating material (HC) and to modify this HC with fluoride (NaF) and stannous (SnCl2) ions, directly or encapsulated in nano containers, testing the effects of these materials against dental erosion and erosion-abrasion. Enamel and dentin specimens were treated with the HCs, and then tested in erosion or erosion-abrasion cycling models of 5 days (n = 10 for each substrate, for each model). Deionized water was the negative control, and a fluoride varnish, the positive control. Surface loss (SL, in µm) was evaluated with an optical profilometer, and data wer

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease symptoms and tooth wear in patients with Sjögren's syndrome.

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) symptoms and tooth wear in patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) compared with matched controls. GORD symptoms were assessed for 33 SS patients and 20 age- and sex-matched controls. Tooth wear was assessed in all patients and controls. The results were further analysed in two subgroups of SS patients and controls with and without GORD symptoms (SS patients without GORD symptoms: n = 11, controls without GORD symptoms: n = 18). A higher proportion of SS patients reported suffering from heartburn and r

Histological analysis of post-eruption tooth wear adaptations, and ontogenetic changes in tooth implantation in the acrodontan squamate Pogona vitticeps.

Teeth have been a focus of research in both extinct and extant taxa alike; a significant portion of dental literature is concerned with dental patterning and replacement. Most non-mammalian vertebrates continuously replace their dentition but an anomalous group of squamates has forgone this process in only having one tooth generation; these squamates all have apically implanted teeth, a condition known as acrodonty. Acrodont dentition and various characteristics attributed to it, including a lack of replacement, have often been defined ambiguously. This study explores this type of implantation

Dental erosion and erosive tooth wear in childhood and adolescence: from diagnosis to prevention.

BACKGROUND: Dental erosion and erosive tooth wear (ETW) are increasingly significant non-carious defects in industrialized countries. Reasons for an increased prevalence are mainly modern dietary habits, but an improved diagnostic awareness also contributes to an apparent increase in cases. Unlike caries, erosion involves acid-induced demineralization without bacterial involvement. When this is combined with mechanical wear, it results in ETW. Diagnosis commonly employs the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE), a standardized clinical index assessing lesion severity across sextants. ETIOLOGY

Factors associated with tooth wear in a Swedish adult population: a cross‑sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear encompasses the loss of dental hard tissues through processes including attrition, abrasion and erosion. Previous studies have identified potential associations with age, sex, salivary characteristics, socioeconomic factors and bruxism; however, findings remain inconsistent and often based on single-factor analyses. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with tooth wear, with emphasis on subject‑based bruxism, and to evaluate the relative contribution of bruxism in relation to demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, and functional factors using a multivariate a

Tooth wear and tertiary crowding: a 13-year cohort study in Amazon Indigenous populations.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear is an important mechanism for reducing dental dimensions and, consequently, dental crowding. The objective of this cohort study was to examine the relation of tooth wear, adjusted for covariates (age, tooth loss, arch perimeter and intercanine width), on tertiary crowding in Amazon Indigenous populations. METHODS: A sample of 40 Indigenous people in permanent dentition at T0 (baseline) and after 13 years (T1) were evaluated. The sample included 16 males and 24 females belonging to two villages, Arara (n = 22, mean ages 16.6 and 29.9 years) and Assurini do Xingu (n = 18,

Management of localized anterior tooth wear: a minimally invasive approach using the Dahl concept.

The Dahl concept has been widely recognized and applied in the management of localized anterior tooth wear for several decades, although its clinical implementation remains a topic of ongoing discussion. This case report describes a practical application of the Dahl concept in a patient presenting with severe wear of the lower anterior teeth, accompanied by reversible pulpitis. The report outlines a minimally invasive restorative strategy, guided by the principles of the Dahl concept, using composite resin to achieve occlusal elevation. This approach avoids extensive tooth reduction or the nee

Obesity and tooth wear among American adults: the role of sugar-sweetened acidic drinks.

BACKGROUND: To explore the association between obesity and tooth wear among American adults and the role of sugar-sweetened acidic drinks consumption in explaining that association. METHODS: We analyzed data from 3541 adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Obesity was determined using the body mass index and tooth wear was assessed using the modified tooth wear index. Daily intake of four categories of drinks was estimated as the average (drinks/day) of two consecutive 24-h dietary recalls. The association between obesity and number of surfaces with modera

The Impact of Toothbrushing on Oral Health, Gingival Recession, and Tooth Wear-A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Toothbrushing is a recommended daily practice that helps sustain oral health. However, if performed improperly, it can lead to loss of tooth structure and injury to soft tissues. We explored this topic with an extensive literature search. Methods: A literature search was performed across textbooks and journals for original research and review articles in Scopus, PubMed, PubMed Central, and Cochrane databases, published between 1967 and 2024. Results: The search result yielded 118 articles that were suitable to include in this review. Toothpaste abrasivity plays a major r

Periodontal Disease and Tooth Wear in a Sample of German Soldiers with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

PURPOSE: Dental symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients include a majority of painful temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscle findings, restricted mouth opening, and pronounced attritions. Traumatic occlusal force resulting in injury of the teeth and/or the periodontal attachment apparatus may exceed the adaptive capacity of the individual person or site. This observational cross-sectional study in soldiers with PTSD and a non-PTSD control group after military deployments aimed to evaluate a possible relationship between bruxism and periodontal diagnosis. The use of fluoride for the prevention of dental erosion and erosive tooth wear in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) has gained increasing clinical relevance. It is estimated that worldwide 30-50% of deciduous and 20-45% of permanent teeth are affected. One of the most important nutritional factors causing ETW is the overconsumption of soft drinks, but also patient-related factors like reflux or eating disorders can lead to erosive lesions. Whether acids lead to erosive demineralisation depends on their degree of saturation with respect to tooth mineral at their actual pH. REVIEW: Fluoride compounds like sodium or amine fluoride seem to be of limited efficacy against ero

Erosive tooth wear - a review on global prevalence and on its prevalence in risk groups.

Erosion is a common phenomenon in the general population of developed countries. However, due to variations in indices, sample sizes and general study designs, it is difficult to compare the various studies and to estimate actual global prevalence. Therefore, the aim of this present paper is to give a narrative overview on the data available on the global prevalence of erosion. Information on prevalence is not available from each country; in particular, data from Asia, Africa, South America, North America and large parts of South-Eastern Europe are unavailable. There is a large variation in gl
