Effect of a Multidirectional Power Toothbrush and a Manual Toothbrush in Individuals Susceptible to Gingival Recession: A 12-Month Randomized Controlled Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have explored the relationship between toothbrushing and development of gingival recession (GR), but relevant GR data for the multidirectional power toothbrush (PT) are lacking. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of brushing with either a multidirectional PT or American Dental Association reference manual toothbrush (MT) on mid-buccal preexisting GR (PreGR) during 12 months. METHODS: This was a 12-month prospective, single-masked, parallel-group, randomized, controlled clinical study. Healthy participants without periodontitis with at least two teeth

Comparative impact of manual and electric toothbrushing on acid-eroded enamel.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the enamel wear resulting from manual and electric toothbrushing following acid erosion, using natural human enamel specimens. The study aimed to quantify both surface tissue loss and subsurface prism alterations. METHODS: Twenty-four caries-free extracted human molars were decoronated and sectioned to expose natural buccal enamel surfaces. Samples were divided into two groups (manual vs electric) and subjected to four cycles of citric acid erosion (pH 2.7) followed by controlled brushing (30 strokes per cycle, total 120) using a non-fluoridated toothpaste s

Co-creating a toothbrushing intervention for adults with severe mental illness.

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental Illness (SMI) bear an excessive burden of periodontal disease, which can exacerbate their mental and physical multimorbidity. Therefore, improving and sustaining good oral hygiene is key. AIMS: To co-create a theory-driven oral hygiene intervention for people with SMI. METHOD: A two-stage, eight-step method was followed drawing on the Behaviour Change Wheel. Stage 1, understanding the problem, involved evidence review and stakeholder consultations. Stage 2 focused on identifying theoretical barriers and facilitators through semi-structured interviews (n

Combined Effect of Toothbrushing and Interdental Cleaning on the Risk of Dementia.

PURPOSE: Systemic inflammation contributes to dementia risk by promoting amyloid beta production and enhancing brain neurotoxicity. While oral hygiene is key in managing inflammation, few studies have assessed the combined effect of toothbrushing frequency and interdental cleaning on dementia risk. This study examined the association between oral hygiene behaviors and dementia onset among older Korean adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study followed participants for 11 years using data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Information Database. Kaplan-

[Conservative treatment of oesophageal perforation in a child caused by a toothbrush].

Traumatic perforation of the oesophagus is a condition with high morbidity and mortality. We report a case of a one-year-old girl with traumatic oesophageal perforation caused by a fall with a toothbrush. She underwent a conservative regimen consisting of drainage of the mediastinum by a naso-cavitary drain, antibiotics and a feeding tube. No sign of mediastinitis was found on a follow-up computed tomography 19 days later, and she was discharged in good condition.

Chewing sticks: timeless natural toothbrushes for oral cleansing.

It is generally accepted that oral hygiene maintenance through regular removal of dental plaque and food deposits is an essential factor in the prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease. Methods for oral hygiene vary from country to country and from culture to culture. Despite the widespread use of toothbrushes and toothpastes, natural methods of tooth cleaning using chewing sticks selected and prepared from the twigs, stems or roots from a variety of plant species have been practised for thousands of years in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. Selected clinical studies

Gingival recession in relation to history of hard toothbrush use.

Gingival recession studies in the U.S. have related primarily to sex and age with little consideration of toothbrush hardness. This preliminary study examined the relation between a history of hard toothbrush use and gingival recession. A total of 182 subjects, male and female, between 18 and 65 years of age, with a minimum of 18 natural teeth, no advanced periodontitis or history of periodontal surgery were examined. Gingival recession was scored as present whenever the free gingival margin was apical to the cemento-enamel junction and root surface was exposed. History of hard toothbrush use

Successful Premedication With Sublingual Midazolam Using a Suction Toothbrush.

Premedication is often used to reduce the stress associated with anesthesia-related procedures. However, in some cases, patients may not cooperate with medication delivery because of significant fear and anxiety. We report a case of an uncooperative patient with severe intellectual disabilities who was successfully premedicated with the unique technique of sublingual midazolam administration using a suction toothbrush. The 38-year-old male patient was planned to receive dental treatment under deep intravenous sedation (IVS), but he refused both intravenous cannulation and mask induction. Prean

Droplet Sizes Emitted from Demonstration Electric Toothbrushes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has drawn attention to microbial transmission risk via aerosols in dental practice. Demonstration electric toothbrushes are used intra-orally for education. The aim of this investigation was to measure the size of droplets emitted by the brush head of two demonstration oscillating-rotating electric toothbrushes. Measurement of droplet production and size was recorded in vitro using three methods: (1) Malvern Spraytec (LASER particle size measurement device with detectable particle size of 0.1-2500 µm) and brushes mounted on a 3D-printed, two-shell form-fit fixture with a

A Broken Toothbrush in the Retropharyngeal Space in a Toddler of Sixteen Months.

A toddler of sixteen months fell while brushing his teeth and his mouth hit the ground. The toothbrush broke and one-third of it including the head got impacted in his throat. The attempt of his mother to remove it with her fingers further complicated the case and the toothbrush was ultimately lodged in the retropharyngeal space at the level from C1 to C5 vertebrae. It was strongly impacted due to the presence of the bristles. The broken end of the handle was just protruding into the nasopharynx and was very difficult to locate. The first attempt of its removal was unsuccessful. The toothbrush

A toothbrush impalement injury of the floor of mouth in autism child.

Penetrating injuries in the oral cavity are common in children. However, penetrating injuries with retained foreign bodies are rare. We report a case of a toothbrush impalement injury of the floor of the mouth in a child with autism. A 5-year-old boy with autism presented with an accidentally impaled toothbrush in the oral cavity. He was taken to the operation room and examined under general anesthesia. The handle of the toothbrush was cut off using rib scissors for mask ventilation, and intra-oral intubation was performed. The toothbrush was located approximately 2.5 cm into the floor of the

An unusual case of trauma: a toothbrush embedded in the buccal mucosa.

Severe trauma from a toothbrush is unusual in childhood. This case report illustrates a case where a toothbrush was so embedded in the buccal soft tissues that it needed to be removed under a general anaesthetic. Other cases are outlined where life-threatening conditions rapidly arose following toothbrush trauma to the oro-pharynx, both patients having been initially discharged without treatment from a casualty department. Apparently minor oro-pharyngeal lacerations should be approached with caution when a penetrating injury from a toothbrush or any object has occurred.
