Valgus torque in youth baseball pitchers: A biomechanical study.

The purpose of this study was to determine the biomechanical and anthropometric factors contributing to elbow valgus torque during pitching. Video data of 14 youth pitchers throwing fastballs were used to calculate shoulder and elbow kinematics and kinetics. Peak elbow valgus torque averaged 18 Nm and occurred just before maximal shoulder external rotation. The magnitude of valgus torque was most closely correlated with the thrower's weight. When subject weight and height were controlled for, maximum shoulder abduction torque and maximum shoulder internal rotation torque were most strongly ass

High insertion torque versus regular insertion torque: early crestal bone changes on dental implants in relation to primary stability-a retrospective clinical study.

The aim of the presented retrospective study was to evaluate the early crestal bone changes around an implant type designed for high primary stability. A total number of 111 implants placed clinically were evaluated regarding insertion torque, bone density, implant stability quotient (ISQ) and early crestal bone loss from standardized digital radiographs. The implants were allocated in two groups: the "regular torque " group contained all implants that achieved less than 50 Ncm as final insertion torque (n = 63) and the "high torque" group contained the implants that achieved 50-80 Ncm (n = 48

Generation, transmission, and conversion of orbital torque by an antiferromagnetic insulator.

Electrical control of magnetization in nanoscale devices can be significantly improved through the efficient generation of orbital currents and their conversion into spin currents. In nonmagnetic/ferromagnetic bilayers, this conversion produces a torque on the magnetization, enabling magnetization switching and dynamic manipulation. While previous studies focus on metallic ferromagnets, we demonstrate a large orbital torque and enhanced orbital-to-spin conversion by an antiferromagnetic insulating CoO layer. Measurements in CuOx/CoO/Co trilayers show that inserting CoO reverses the torque's si

Voltage-Controlled Bimeron-Torques Switching of In-Plane Magnetization.

Controlling the out-of-plane magnetization in nanodevices via electric currents has played a pivotal role in advancing high-impact data storage and nonvolatile logic technologies within spintronic devices. However, the in-plane magnetization materials, which are more accessible than their out-of-plane counterparts, are less favored in terms of switching efficiency and magnetization stability. This is due to their larger switching barriers, resulting in a higher critical switching current in the commonly used spin-transfer torques or spin-orbit torques magnetic random-access memory. Here, we pr

Symmetry Control of Unconventional Spin-Orbit Torques in IrO2.

Spin-orbit torques generated by a spin current are key to magnetic switching in spintronic applications. The polarization of the spin current dictates the direction of switching required for energy-efficient devices. Conventionally, the polarizations of these spin currents are restricted to be along a certain direction due to the symmetry of the material allowing only for efficient in-plane magnetic switching. Unconventional spin-orbit torques arising from novel spin current polarizations, however, have the potential to switch other magnetization orientations such as perpendicular magnetic ani

Influence of Torque and Cadence on Power Output Production in Cyclists.

PURPOSE: No information is available on the torque/cadence relationship in road cyclists. We aimed to establish whether this relationship differs between cyclists of different performance levels or team roles. METHODS: Mean maximal power (MMP) output data from 177 riders were obtained from 2012 to 2021 from training and competitions. Cyclists were categorized according to their performance level (world-tour [WT, n = 68], procontinental [PC, n = 63], or under 23 [U23, n = 46]) and team role (time trialists [n = 12], all-rounders [n = 94], climbers [n = 64], or team leaders [n = 7]). RESULTS:

The effects of exercise-induced muscle damage on critical torque.

OBJECTIVE: Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) has been shown to reduce endurance exercise performance. This study examined the effects of EIMD on critical torque (CT) and the sum of the torque integral above CT during (∫ T total) during a 5-min all-out, intermittent isometric knee extension exercise. METHODS: CT was determined in eight participants prior to and 48-h following EIMD. EIMD was induced using electrically stimulated eccentric knee extensions until maximal voluntary strength (MVC) was reduced by 40%. EIMD was assessed by changes in MVC and ratings of muscle soreness using a VAS

Identification of a new genotype of Torque Teno Mini virus.

BACKGROUND: Although human torque teno viruses (TTVs) were first discovered in 1997, still many associated aspects are not clarified yet. The viruses reveal a remarkable heterogeneity and it is possible that some genotypes are more pathogenic than others. The identification of all genotypes is essential to confirm previous pathogenicity data, and an unbiased search for novel viruses is needed to identify TTVs that might be related to disease. METHOD: The virus discovery technique VIDISCA-454 was used to screen serum of 55 HIV-1 positive injecting drug users, from the Amsterdam Cohort Studies,

Proprioception and muscle torque deficits in children with hypermobility syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Sensorimotor deficits such as impaired joint proprioception and muscle weakness have been found in association with hypermobility syndrome (HMS) in adults. HMS is more common in children than adults, yet such deficits have not been adequately investigated in paediatric populations. It is therefore uncertain as to what sensorimotor deficits are present in children with HMS. This study investigated knee joint proprioception and muscle torque in healthy children and those with HMS. METHODS: Thirty-seven healthy children (mean age +/- s.d. = 11.5 +/- 2.6 yrs) and 29 children with HMS

A comparison of two different techniques for oculomotor torque reduction.

PURPOSE: To compare the results of two different surgical techniques: 'Cüppers technique', in which the torque of oculomotor rectus muscles is reduced by suturing the muscle to the globe in the posterior half of the globe; and 'Y-split recessions', in which the muscle torque is reduced by Y-splitting the rectus muscles, and reattaching the two halves at an angle to each other. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective analysis of the outcome of surgery on 100 patients with infantile esotropia. RESULTS: Both techniques show a sufficient reduction of strabismus angle variability, and minimal and

Forearm torque strengths and discomfort profiles in pronation and supination.

This experiment investigated maximum forearm pronation and supination torques and forearm discomfort, for intermittent torque exertions in supine and prone forearm angles for the right arm. Twenty-two subjects participated in the study that comprised two parts, the first of which involved measurement of maximum forearm torque in both twisting directions at five forearm angles including neutral. This was followed by endurance tests at 50% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in both directions. The second part of the study involved subjects performing 5-min duration of intermittent isometric tor

Torque properties of a rat oesophagus for physiological and diabetic conditions.

In this paper the torque of an oesophagus is studied for physiological and diabetic conditions. Since the function of the oesophagus is mainly mechanical, this work is focused on providing quantitative measurement of the passive biomechanical properties of the oesophagus torque. The oesophagus was treated as a membrane when calculating the stress and strain. The torque versus twist-angle relation was approximated to be linear at a specified pressure and longitudinal stretch ratio. Thus, the shear modulus can be computed by the torque, twist angle and polar moment of inertia in this state. The

Eccentric and concentric torque and power of the knee extensors of females.

The purpose of this study was to compare differences in eccentric and concentric peak torque and power measurements of knee extensors at different velocities. The subjects included 21 females between the ages of 19 and 28, who had no history of knee pain or abnormality. Eccentric and concentric contractions of the knee extensors of the dominant leg of each subject were tested on an isokinetic dynameter at 60 degrees/s, 120 degrees/s and 180 degrees/s. Eccentric peak torque was greater than concentric at each of the three velocities tested, whereas eccentric power was significantly greater only

Deterministic Switching of the Néel Vector by Asymmetric Spin Torque.

Néel vector, the order parameter of collinear antiferromagnets, serves as a state variable in associated antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronic devices to encode information. A deterministic switching of Néel vector is crucial for the write-in operation, which, however, remains a challenging problem in AFM spintronics. Here we demonstrate, based on analytical derivation and macro-spin simulations, that Néel vector switching can be generally achieved via a current-induced spin torque, provided the spin accumulations responsible for this torque are non-identical between opposite sublattices. This co

The efficacy of different torque profiles for weight compensation of the hand.

Orthotic wrist supports will be beneficial for people with muscular weakness to keep their hand in a neutral rest position and prevent potential wrist contractures. Compensating the weight of the hands is complex since the level of support depends on both wrist and forearm orientations. To explore simplified approaches, two different weight compensation strategies (constant and linear) were compared to the theoretical ideal sinusoidal profile and no compensation in eight healthy subjects using a mechanical wrist support system. All three compensation strategies showed a significant reduction o

Hawkmoths regulate flight torques with their abdomen for yaw control.

Many animals use body parts such as tails to stabilize posture while moving at high speed. In flying insects, leg or abdominal inertia can influence flight posture. In the hawkmoth Manduca sexta, the abdomen contributes ∼50% of the total body weight and it can therefore serve to inertially redirect flight forces. How do torques generated by the wings and abdomen interact for flight control? We studied the yaw optomotor response of M. sexta by using a torque sensor attached to their thorax. In response to yaw visual motion, the abdomen moved antiphase with the stimulus, head and total torque. B

Torque variability of the plantar flexors in people with Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Torque steadiness can be impaired in people with Huntington's disease (HD) and worsen with disease advancement. However, existing studies have several methodological oversights. Studies have used absolute torque targets, which do not account for differences in maximal torque capacity between people. Furthermore, despite its known influence on torque steadiness, previous studies in HD have not controlled for visual feedback. This study evaluated torque variability at relative intensities with and without visual feedback between people with prodromal HD and healthy controls. METHODS

A novel approach of torque control for maxillary displaced incisors.

Effective torque control is crucial for the successful treatment of impacted incisors; however, torque control is often a challenge with the use of conventional bracket systems, especially when the adjacent teeth require opposite torque managements. A novel approach of torque control for adjacent anterior teeth is introduced in this case report. A 12-year-old boy had an impacted maxillary right central incisor with the adjacent teeth severely displaced. The treatment plan was to regain space and pull the impacted incisor into the dentition. An upper removable appliance was first used to regain
