This paper explores the innovative concept of using wearable technologies as a medium for musical expression. Special emphasis is placed on a unique wearable device equipped with motion, touch, and acceleration sensors, which can be used as a wrist strap, hand strap, or surface drum pad. The aim is to create a new musical instrument that simplifies music learning and expression and makes them more intuitive. The wearable device contains 32 individual touch-sensitive pressure sensors, a nine-axis inertial-measurement-unit motion sensor, and various light-emitting diode and vibrational haptic-fe

The ability to sample sensory information with our hands is crucial for smooth and efficient interactions with the world. Despite this important role of touch, tactile sensations on a moving hand are perceived weaker than when presented on the same but stationary hand. This phenomenon of tactile suppression has been explained by predictive mechanisms, such as internal forward models, that estimate future sensory states of the body on the basis of the motor command and suppress the associated predicted sensory feedback. The origins of tactile suppression have sparked a lot of debate, with conte

The human-machine interface (HMI) previously relied on a single perception interface that cannot realize three-dimensional (3D) interaction and convenient and accurate interaction in multiple scenes. Here, we propose a collaborative interface including electrooculography (EOG) and tactile perception for fast and accurate 3D human-machine interaction. The EOG signals are mainly used for fast, convenient, and contactless 2D (XY-axis) interaction, and the tactile sensing interface is mainly utilized for complex 2D movement control and Z-axis control in the 3D interaction. Multi-sensory human-machine interfaces are currently challenged by the lack of effective, comfortable and affordable actuation technologies for wearable tactile displays of softness in virtual- or augmented-reality environments. They should provide fingertips with tactile feedback mimicking the tactual feeling perceived while touching soft objects, for applications like virtual reality-based training, tele-rehabilitation, tele-manipulation, tele-presence, etc. Displaying a virtual softness on a fingertip requires the application of quasi-static (non-vibratory) forces via a deformable surface,

Multimodal perception is the predominant means by which individuals experience and interact with the world. However, sensory dysfunction or loss can significantly impede this process. In such cases, cross-modality research offers valuable insight into how we can compensate for these sensory deficits through sensory substitution. Although sight and hearing are both used to estimate the distance to an object (e.g., by visual size and sound volume) and the perception of distance is an important element in navigation and guidance, it is not widely studied in cross-modal research. We investigate th

Octopuses integrate visual, chemical and tactile sensory information while foraging and feeding in complex marine habitats. The respective roles of these modes are of interest ecologically, neurobiologically, and for development of engineered soft robotic arms. While vision guides their foraging path, benthic octopuses primarily search "blindly" with their arms to find visually hidden prey amidst rocks, crevices and coral heads. Each octopus arm is lined with hundreds of suckers that possess a combination of chemo- and mechanoreceptors to distinguish prey. Contact chemoreception has been demon

This paper attempts to induce the third-person perspective full body illusion (3PP-FBI) with virtual reality (VR) in stroke patients. Nineteen individuals with stroke were recruited. The 3PP-FBI induction method, which was well-established in healthy individuals, using synchronous visual-tactile stimulation on one body part was used. Questionnaire scores and proprioceptive drift values were collected under different conditions for characterizing the induced 3PP-FBI. Results showed that synchronous visual-tactile stimulation of a single body part (back or upper limb) was sufficient to elicit 3P

In this review, the development of communication systems and devices that convey language tactually is examined, first from an historical perspective focusing on the communities who use the tactile modality to substitute for impairments in vision and/or hearing. Then, the more recent developments in wearable tactile communication systems for conveying text and speech to those without sensory impairments are reviewed. The performance of tactile display technology developed for these user communities is discussed in the context of the proficiency achieved by skilled users of natural methods of t

Alpha oscillatory activity is thought to contribute to visual expectancy through the engagement of task-relevant occipital regions. In early blindness, occipital alpha oscillations are systematically reduced, suggesting that occipital alpha depends on visual experience. However, it remains possible that alpha activity could serve expectancy in non-visual modalities in blind people, especially considering that previous research has shown the recruitment of the occipital cortex for non-visual processing. To test this idea, we used electroencephalography to examine whether alpha oscillations refl

Chronic pain is highly prevalent, and non-pharmacological tools are a crucial part of a multimodal approach to reducing burden of pain. Among these touch-based interventions such as massage have long been popular, yet their underlying pain-relieving mechanisms are poorly understood. Touch-based therapies often involve gentle stroking associated with the C-tactile afferent pathway and deep pressure. Although chronic pain patients often find touch less pleasant than individuals without pain, the effects of chronic pain on touch-pain modulation have not been directly studied. In the current study

The rubber limb illusion (RLI) describes a perceptual phenomenon where synchronous stroking of a hidden real and a visible artificial limb induces ownership for the fake limb, i.e., the sensation as if it belongs to one's body. Previous research suggests that the induction of ownership in the RLI is closely related to the referral of touch, i.e., the perception that the observed touch on the artificial limb causes the tactile sensation. However, the ultimate importance of touch referral for eliciting limb ownership remains unclear. To help answer this question, the present study re-analyzed th

Touch perception is an inherently multisensory process in which vision plays an essential role. However, our understanding of how vision encodes sensory and emotional-affective aspects of observed touch, and the timing of these processes, remains limited. To address this gap, we investigated the neural dynamics of visual touch perception using electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings from participants who viewed videos depicting detailed tactile hand interactions from the Validated Touch-Video Database. We examined how the brain encodes basic body cues, such as hand orientation and viewing per

Autistic people face touch-related challenges, yet the factors influencing these difficulties are not well understood. We developed a novel instrument to capture social touch experiences of autistic adults, along with both social and individual factors that influence them. Using a body-painting task and questionnaires, we demonstrated that the perception of touch interactions varies based on social contexts and neurotypes. Autistic adults, on average, prefer touch less, but the type of relationship influences the perceived comfort and meaningfulness of touch similarly in both groups. Regarding

BACKGROUND: Vision and touch are thought to contribute information to object perception in an independent but complementary manner. The left lateral posterior parietal cortex (LPPC) has long been associated with multisensory information processing, and it plays an important role in visual and haptic crossmodal information retrieval. However, it remains unclear how LPPC subregions are involved in visuo-haptic crossmodal retrieval processing.
METHODS: In the present study, we used an fMRI experiment with a crossmodal delayed match-to-sample paradigm to reveal the functional role of LPPC subregi

Locating a tactile stimulus on the body seems effortless and straightforward. However, the perceived location of a tactile stimulation can differ from its physical location [1-3]. Tactile mislocalizations can depend on the timing of successive stimulations [2, 4, 5], tactile motion mechanisms [6], or processes that "remap" stimuli from skin locations to external space coordinates [7-11]. We report six experiments demonstrating that the perception of tactile localization on a static body part is strongly affected by the displacement between the locations of two successive task-irrelevant action

The influence of landmarks, that is, nearby non-target stimuli, on spatial perception has been shown in multiple ways. These include altered target localization variability near landmarks and systematic spatial distortions of target localizations. Previous studies have mostly been conducted in the visual modality using temporary, artificial landmarks or the tactile modality with persistent landmarks on the body. Thus, it is unclear whether both landmark types produce the same spatial distortions as they were never investigated in the same modality. Addressing this, we used a novel tactile setu

INTRODUCTION: Differentiation between self-produced tactile stimuli and touch by others is necessary for social interactions and for a coherent concept of "self". In attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder (ADHD), tactile hypersensitivity and social cognition problems are part of the symptomatology, but pathophysiological mechanisms are largely unknown. Differentiation of self- and non-self- generated sensations might be key to understand and develop novel strategies for managing hypersensitivity. Here, we compared the neural signatures of affective self- and other-touch between adults with A

The perception of temporal correspondence between sensory signals from body movements and those arising through environmental interactions is crucial for multisensory integration and adaptive behavior. In adults, the perception of multisensory temporal alignment is more accurate during active than passive or no movement. Currently, it is not known whether this is the case in children. Thus, we used an audiotactile temporal order judgment task (TOJ) to investigate multisensory temporal perception during active and passive arm movement in 6 to11-year-old blindfolded children (N = 87). Results in

Goodale and Milner's (1992) "vision-for-action" and "vision-for-perception" account of the division of labor between the dorsal and ventral "streams" has come to dominate contemporary views of the functional roles of these two pathways. Nevertheless, some lines of evidence for the model remain controversial. Recently, Thomas Schenk reexamined visual form agnosic patient DF's spared anticipatory grip scaling to object size, one of the principal empirical pillars of the model. Based on this new evidence, Schenk rejects the original interpretation of DF's spared ability that was based on segregat

Whether reaching for an object or avoiding a potential threat, our ability to interact with the world relies on anticipating physical contact with nearby objects. This ability is thought to depend on the facilitation of tactile processing whenever an object enters the region surrounding the body where physical interaction is possible, referred to as 'peripersonal space'. Traditionally, these facilitation effects have been ascribed to the activity of the peripersonal neurons, which show maximal responses when tactile stimuli on the body co-occur with nearby visual or auditory stimuli, and would
