The chronic oral administration of nitrosomorpholine (NM) and nitrosopiperidine (NP) to 360 adult Syrian golden hamsters of both sexes resulted in the induction of a high incidence of laryngo-tracheal tumors, which in the group treated with 0.01% solution of NM affected up to 80% of the males. A total of 232 different laryngo-tracheal tumors were found. 36 of these were located within the supraglottic and glottic larynx, 62 were within the subglottic and glottic larynx, and 134 arose within the trachea. Among the laryngeal supraglottic and glottic tumors there were 18 squamous cell carcinomas,

We report the case of a 66-year-old woman who was diagnosed with localized tracheal amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis caused by an underlying B-cell neoplasm. The diagnosis was confirmed through subsequent bronchoscopy and biopsies; however, she experienced a challenging episode of hypoxic respiratory failure that required intervention. Repeat bronchoscopies showed persistent subglottic stenosis and tracheobronchomalacia, which led to tracheal debulking surgery and additional interventions. The patient's treatment began with rituximab, zanubrutinib, and dexamethasone with outpatient follow-

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMTs) are rare and clinically benign in childhood, and malignant in adults. The aetiology of IMTs is not clear, and recent studies report it as true neoplasm rather than a reactive or inflammatory lesion. IMTs can involve any part of the body, but are usually common in lungs. These are rarely seen in adults and tracheal involvement is also rare in both adults and children. We describe an 18-year-old woman who presented with respiratory difficulty to the emergency department. On clinical examination, the patient had complete absence of breath sounds on the

Osteochondroma is a benign cartilaginous neoplasm and is the most common benign bone tumor. Osteochondromas arising from the clavicular head are extremely rare and symptomatic cases are even less common. We report a 23-year-old man who presented with dyspnea due to tracheal displacement resulting from a clavicular osteochondroma. The patient underwent successful resection involving a trap-door thoracotomy.

BACKGROUND: Glomus tumors are rare, benign mesenchymal neoplasms that account for less than 2% of all soft tissue tumors and are uncommon in visceral organs. Endobronchial glomus tumors are particularly rare, with fewer than 80 cases reported and only three cases of glomus tumor arising in the tracheal bifurcation have been reported thus far.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a Japanese male in his 70s, was diagnosed with a tracheal mass during a routine health check. He had no specific clinical symptoms. His past medical history included myocardial infarction and brain infarction, and he had b

A clinical review with an analysis of prognostic factors, including clinical characteristics, histological classifications, presenting symptoms/signs and treatment modalities, was conducted in 67 patients with primary malignant neoplasms of the trachea who were seen at the Veterans General Hospital-Taipei between 1979 and 1994. The incidence of tracheal cancer was 140 times less than lung cancer during this period. Delayed diagnosis of more than 6 months after onset of symptoms occurred in one-third of the patients owing to lack of specific symptoms/signs indicative of tracheal disease. Epider

For all cases of tracheal obstructions surgery should be considered first. Interventional endoscopic procedures can provide immediate relief. Intraluminally growing tumors can be resected with laser, argon-plasma coagulation, an electrosurgical knife or cryo-probe. Photodynamic therapy of smaller tracheal tumors can be curative. Narrowing from intramural tumor growth or wall destruction requires internal splinting with an airway stent. Scar strictures can be dilated with balloons but the biotrauma may stimulate new scarring. In benign strictures and malacias, tracheal stents should only be pla

In this case report two accidents are described, in which a tracheal stenosis has happened. The stenosis in both cases was evoked by lymphatic neoplasms in the mediastine. The kinetics of the lymphatic fluid in anaesthesia and in intermittent positive pressure ventilation are discussed. The first patient had to be radiated with the "Gammatron" for reduction of lymphatic tissue in the following four days and then he could be extubated. The second patient could be extubated the same day after CPAP breathing for several hours.

Glomus tumours (GTs) are rare benign neoplasms arising from modified smooth muscle cells (SMCs) surrounding arteriovenous anastomosis. Typically, these tumours are found in the distal portion of the digits, especially under the fingernails. A GTs originating from the trachea is extremely rare. We are presenting the case of a Caucasian man in his early 80s, presenting with upper airway obstruction and massive bleeding caused by a large tracheal tumour to which final diagnosis of glomangioma of the trachea was retained. Methods of diagnostics, management and follow-up are documented. The inciden

Transoral or combined transnasal-transoral approach is sometimes used for tumor resection in patients with skull base and vertebral neoplasms. In such cases, percutaneous tracheostomy before surgical intervention is advisable. Tracheostomy facilitates surgical access, eliminates intraoperative risk of endotracheal tube kinking and provides airway protection from aspiration in early postoperative period in case of bulbar disorders, hypopharynx and tongue edema. The authors present two patients with massive proliferation of pathological tissue in nasopharynx and oropharynx that excluded tracheal

BACKGROUND Thyroid malignant lesions mostly present as an anterior neck mass with or without compressive symptoms. Infrequently, metastases from extra-thyroid neoplasms migrate to the thyroid gland. These lesions most commonly arise from renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which is the primary kidney malignancy in adults. This case parallels one of the longest latency periods described in the literature from a primary RCC with metastasis to the thyroid gland (TG). CASE REPORT We report a case of an 88-year-old female patient with past medical history of RCC resected 25 years earlier, who presented to

A case of a 81-year old female patient with a clinically non-verified neurinoma of the 8th cranial nerve is presented. According to symptoms and radiological examinations, esophageal neoplasm with esophago-tracheal fistula was suspected. The patient died on the 4th day after radiological examination due to progressive respiratory failure. Autopsy revealed neurinoma of the 8th cranial nerve as well as adult respiratory distress syndrome due to aspiration of the radiological contrast medium.

CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old, castrated male domestic shorthair cat presented with stertor and severe respiratory distress caused by intratracheal masses occluding the majority of the tracheal lumen. Conventional endoscopic forceps biopsy yielded small tissue fragments, which were insufficient for a definitive histopathological diagnosis. Given the perceived high risk of tracheal resection and anastomosis, bronchoscopic cryotherapy with a 1.1 mm, flexible cryoprobe was performed for cryobiopsy and cryo-debulking. The masses occluded 80-90% of the lumen and were completely removed with cryothera

The objective of these notes is to stress the principles underlying the management of primary lung cancers and other types of malignancies in the thorax-diffuse malignant mesothelioma, invasive mediastinal tumors, chest wall sarcoma, and tracheal neoplasms-and from these considerations to outline a routine scheme for management, which can be followed easily by all staff. It is hoped that by adherence to this routine, adequate and efficient management of all cases will be obtained, both in the very important matter of preoperative preparation, as well in the postoperative management.

Diseases of the trachea are rare, while other diseases associated with shortness of breath and pulmonary symptoms are common, which is why the necessary diagnosis and therapy are regularly delayed. At the same time, diseases range from simple scarring stenosis to extensive tumour disease. Patients may be otherwise healthy, suffer from autoimmune disease, or have severe general illnesses, as in tracheotomised patients. Therefore, history and clinical examination provide very important clues to a disease of the trachea. Subsequent diagnostics should be ordered in a reasonable manner and lead to

Surgical resection of the trachea and carina requires a highly specialized team of thoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and operative support staff because of the complex nature of these procedures. Improvements in the design and application of low-pressure cuffed endotracheal tubes and extensive experience in tracheal reconstruction have reduced ventilation associated airway injury and facilitated new techniques for repair. Even with these improvements, tracheal surgery for stenosis is still commonplace, as is the need for resection in cases of benign and malignant lesions of the airway. Sur

PURPOSE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of trachea is a relatively rare malignant neoplasm, for which there is a lack of prospective clinical trials investigating treatment effectiveness. Most of the authors prefer surgical resection followed by post-operative radiation therapy in case of incomplete excision. There are no available prospective data on post-relapse treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: The current paper presents a case of tracheal ACC in a young woman, treated solely with surgical resection without radiotherapy due to postoperative neurological complications requiring additional diagn

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the ability of 3D-CT and virtual bronchoscopy to estimate trachea stenosis in comparison to conventional axial CT and fiberoptic bronchoscopy, with a view to assist thoracic surgeons in depicting the anatomical characteristics of tracheal strictures.
METHODS: Spiral CT was performed in 16 patients with suspected tracheal stenoses and in 5 normal subjects. Tracheal stenoses due to an endoluminal neoplasm were detected in 13 patients, whilst post-intubation tracheal stricture was observed in the other 3 patients. Tracheomalacia is a condition characterized by weakness of the tracheal walls and supporting cartilage. It may be congenital, occurring in association with other lesions, such as vascular ring, tracheoesophageal fistula, dyschondroplasia, congenital cysts or tumors, or it may be acquired, most commonly as a result of protracted endotracheal intubation and less often of irradiation, trauma or neoplasm. We present a case of acquired tracheomalacia in a 15-year-old boy, a victim of Proteus syndrome (hemihypertrophy, subcutaneous tumors, and macrodactyly), who had congenital scoliosis with seconda
