Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Improves Audioverbal Memory in Stroke Patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether anodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the left temporoparietal area improved audioverbal memory performance in stroke patients. DESIGN: Twelve stroke patients with audioverbal memory impairment participated in a single-masked, crossover, and sham-controlled experiment. The anodal or sham transcranial direct current stimulation was applied during the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, which evaluates the ability to recall a list of 15 heard words over five trials. The number of correctly recalled words was compared betwe

Surface EEG-Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) Closed-Loop System.

Conventional transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) protocols rely on applying electrical current at a fixed intensity and duration without using surrogate markers to direct the interventions. This has led to some mixed results; especially because tDCS induced effects may vary depending on the ongoing level of brain activity. Therefore, the objective of this preliminary study was to assess the feasibility of an EEG-triggered tDCS system based on EEG online analysis of its frequency bands. Six healthy volunteers were randomized to participate in a double-blind sham-controlled crossover

Transcranial direct current stimulation in disorders of consciousness: a review.

It is a challenge to evaluate and treat the patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) in the clinic. Due to the huge costs of prolonged intensive care, the management of these patients raises great financial strain on families and important ethical questions. To date, several studies have attempted to specifically detect pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic effectiveness, and until now, there are no evidence-based guidelines about the treatment of patients with DOC. Recently, because of ethical and procedural limitations on the use of invasive stimulation techniques, non-invasive brain stim

Combined Dextroamphetamine and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Poststroke Aphasia.

There is a growing need for various effective adjunctive treatment options for speech recovery after stroke. A pharmacological agent combined with noninvasive brain stimulation has not been previously reported for poststroke aphasia recovery. In this "proof of concept" study, we aimed to test the safety of a combined intervention consisting of dextroamphetamine, transcranial direct current stimulation, and speech and language therapy in subjects with nonfluent aphasia. Ten subjects with chronic nonfluent aphasia underwent two experiments where they received dextroamphetamine or placebo along w

Decreasing propensity to mind-wander with transcranial direct current stimulation.

Mind wandering or task-unrelated thought (TUT) is associated with various impairments as well as with adaptive functions, indicating the importance of regulating this process. Although Axelrod et al. (2015) have shown that anodal/cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the left/right lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) could increase the propensity for mind wandering, it remains unclear whether a different tDCS protocol could have the reverse effect. The present study investigated whether and how simultaneous stimulation of the left LPFC and right inferior parietal lobule (IPL)

Transcranial direct current stimulation: before, during, or after motor training?

Noninvasive brain stimulation has recently been used to augment motor training-induced plasticity. However, the exact time during which noninvasive brain stimulation can be combined with motor therapy to maximize neuroplasticity and behavioral changes is unknown. We conducted a randomized sham-controlled crossover trial to examine when (before, during, or after training) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) should be applied to best reinforce motor training-induced plasticity in 12 healthy right-handed participants (mean age: 21.8±1.6) who underwent active or sham tDCS combined with

Transcranial direct current stimulation for refractory auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

Some patients with schizophrenia may suffer from continuous or severe auditory hallucinations that are refractory to antipsychotic drugs, including clozapine. Such patients may benefit from a short trial of once- to twice-daily transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) with the cathode placed over the left temporoparietal cortex and the anode over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex; negative, cognitive, and other symptoms, if present, may also improve. At present, the case for tDCS treatment of refractory auditory hallucinations rests on 1 well-conducted randomized, sham tDCS-control

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and the 9-dot problem.

Our principal objective was to replicate the findings of Chi and Snyder (2012) who reported that subjects (45% of sample) receiving active transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) involving cathodal stimulation of the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and anodal stimulation of the right ATL were able to successfully complete a task considered exceedingly challenging to solve (i.e., the 9-dot problem) relative to participants receiving sham stimulation (solved problem = 0 %). There are, to our knowledge, no published replication studies of Chi and Snyder's original work targeting the ATL.

Electroencephalography-guided transcranial direct current stimulation improves picture-naming performance.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a potential method for improving verbal function by stimulating Broca's area. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to optimize the stimulation site, but it is unclear whether similar optimization can be achieved using scalp electroencephalography (EEG). Here, we investigated whether tDCS targeting a brain area identified by EEG can improve verbalization performance during a picture-naming task. In Experiment 1, EEG and fMRI data were acquired during a naming task with 21 participant

Personalized Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation for Behavioral and Neurophysiologic Outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is emerging as a home-based intervention for neuropsychiatric conditions and cognitive enhancement. However, its effectiveness is limited by interindividual variability, as fixed-dose protocols have failed to account for anatomic differences influencing current delivery to targeted regions and treatment outcome. While computational modeling supports individualized dosing to improve consistency, experimental validation remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To compare the behavioral and neurophysiologic outcomes of fixed-dose vs individualized-do

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Aviator Performance During Simulated Flight.

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising method for maintaining cognitive performance. Anticipated changes in rotary-wing aircraft are expected to alter aviator performance.METHODS: A single-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study evaluated effects of 2-mA anodal tDCS to the right posterior parietal cortex on aviator performance within a Black Hawk simulator. A mixed design with one between-subjects factor was assessed: stimulation prior to flight (20 constant min) and during flight (two timepoints for 10 min each). The within-subjects factor included active

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in depression induces structural plasticity.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique involving administration of well-tolerated electrical current to the brain through scalp electrodes. TDCS may improve symptoms in neuropsychiatric disorders, but mixed results from recent clinical trials underscore the need to demonstrate that tDCS can modulate clinically relevant brain systems over time in patients. Here, we analyzed longitudinal structural MRI data from a randomized, double-blind, parallel-design clinical trial in depression (NCT03556124, N = 59) to investigate whether serial tDCS indi

Modulation of cue-guided choices by transcranial direct current stimulation.

Environmental cues may anticipate the availability of rewards, thus acting as a guide towards a specific choice (i.e., cue-guided choices). Despite the lateral prefrontal cortex having a critical role in using past learning and flexibly selecting relevant information to guide behavior, the literature on the neural basis of human cue-guided choice mainly focused on the subcortical brain structures implicated, while the specific role of cortical areas remained unclear. The present study aimed to provide causal evidence for the involvement of the lateral prefrontal cortex in two forms of human cu

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Yoga for Functional Movement Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Functional movement disorder (FMD), a conversion disorder characterized by involuntary movements, is difficult to treat. METHODS: We aimed to assess the effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and yoga in FMD patients (n=5). TDCS of the right temporoparietal junction, a brain region relevant in the sense of self-agency, was conducted. Subjects underwent both sham and anodal tDCS with a washout period of 3 weeks. Yoga was used as a mode of exercise, as well as in conjunction with stimulation to sustain potential changes in neural plasticity. RESULTS: A tot

Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa.

Background: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a life-threatening illness with poor treatment outcomes. Although transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising non-invasive brain stimulation method, its effect in patients with AN remains unclear. Objective: This study investigated changes in maladaptive eating behavior, body mass index (BMI), and depression after 10 sessions of anodal tDCS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Methods: In this double-blind, randomized controlled trial, 43 inpatients with AN were divided to receive either active (n = 22) or sham (n = 21) tD

Failure to Improve Verbal Fluency with Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation.

Previous studies in healthy populations have provided equivocal evidence whether the application of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left prefrontal cortex (PFC) can improve performance in verbal fluency tasks. In this double-blind, randomised within-participant study, we investigated whether anodal tDCS over the left PFC improves verbal fluency performance relative to sham tDCS. Forty eight healthy native German speakers performed two verbal fluency tasks after having received 20 min of anodal or sham tDCS over the left PFC. During stimulation, participants perfo

Converging Evidence That Neural Plasticity Underlies Transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation.

It is not definitely known how direct-current stimulation causes its long-lasting effects. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the long time course of transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) is because of the electrical field increasing the plasticity of the brain tissue. If this is the case, then we should see tDCS effects when humans need to encode information into long-term memory, but not at other times. We tested this hypothesis by delivering tDCS to the ventral visual stream of human participants during different tasks (i.e., recognition memory vs. visual search) and at different
