Reduction in movement-evoked pain and fatigue during initial 30-minute transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation treatment predicts transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation responders in women with fibromyalgia.

We previously showed that 1 month of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) reduces movement-evoked pain and fatigue in women with fibromyalgia (FM). Using data from this study (Fibromyalgia Activity Study with TENS [FAST]), we performed a responder analysis to identify predictors of clinical improvement in pain and fatigue with TENS, validated these models using receiver operator characteristic, and determined number needed to treat and number needed to harm. Participants were randomly assigned to active-TENS (2-125 Hz; highest-tolerable intensity), placebo-TENS, or no-TENS for 1

[Effect of electro-acupuncture and transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation on experimental diabetes and its neuropathy].

In this paper, the experimental diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin (STZ, i.p. 50 mg/kg) were divided into three groups, electro-acupuncture (EA group, n = 8), transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS group, n = 8), at bilateral Shenshu and Zusanli points for 20 minutes once every 2-3 days for five weeks, and without any treatment (DM group, n = 6) respectively. As compared with the DM group, the increased plasma glucose levels was lowered significantly in EA group (P < 0.05) and slightly in TENS group (P > 0.05) by the end of the sixth week. And the symtoms of polyphagia, polydipsi

Comparison of Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and Microcurrent Nerve Stimulation (MENS) in the Management of Masticatory Muscle Pain: A Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a heterogeneous group of pathologies affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the jaw muscles, or both. Epidemiological studies of TMD reveal a prevalence of 82% in the general population with 48% of them presenting with clinical features of muscle tenderness and difficulty in mouth opening. TMD are considered to be the most common orofacial pain conditions of nondental origin. METHODS: The patients with TMD were randomly divided into two groups, A and B, based on their VAS scale. Group A consists of two subgroups 1 and 2 each consistin

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and opioid analgesia: Exploring a potential synergistic relationship.

Clinical analgesia requires balancing effective pain relief against opioid-related risks. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), a nonpharmacological and noninvasive modality, demonstrates synergistic potential with opioids, which may enhance analgesia, reduce opioid consumption, and minimize adverse effects. This review synthesizes evidence on TENS-opioid synergy, categorizes TENS modalities and parameters, and examines their interactive mechanisms. We discuss optimization strategies, including early TENS application, parameter individualization, and a "TENS + low-dose opioid" re

Delayed adverse skin reaction to transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) electrodes.

A 76-year-old woman developed a delayed allergic reaction to adhesive pads following home use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for pain management after a complex elbow dislocation. This case highlights the potential for delayed hypersensitivity reactions to TENS electrode pads. Although formal allergology testing was not performed, the woman's self-directed observations offered valuable insight. The clinical presentation and timing of symptom onset were more consistent with allergic rather than irritant contact dermatitis. Allergic contact dermatitis from TENS pads is oft

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for pain control in women with primary dysmenorrhoea.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a non-pharmacological treatment that works by delivering electrical currents via electrodes attached to the skin at the site of pain. It can be an alternative to pharmacological treatments. The mechanism of action of TENS for pain relief is related to the inhibition of the transmission of painful stimuli, release of endogenous opioids, and reduced muscle ischaemia of the uterus. Although it has been used for primary dysmenorrhoea ((PD); period pain or menstrual cramps), evidence of the efficacy and safety of high-frequency TENS,

Facial muscle reanimation by transcutaneous electrical stimulation for peripheral facial nerve palsy.

Reanimation of paralysed facial muscles by electrical stimulation has been studied extensively in animal models, but human studies in this field are largely lacking. Twenty-four subjects with a peripheral facial nerve palsy with a median duration of three years were enrolled. We studied activations of four facial muscles with electrical stimulation using surface electrodes. In subjects whose voluntary movement was severely impaired or completely absent, the electrical stimulation produced a movement that was greater in amplitude compared with the voluntary effort in 10 out of 18 subjects in th

Molybdenum coated SU-8 microneedle electrodes for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

Electrophysiological devices are connected to the body through electrodes. In some applications, such as nerve stimulation, it is needed to minimally pierce the skin and reach the underneath layers to bypass the impedance of the first layer called stratum corneum. In this study, we have designed and fabricated surface microneedle electrodes for applications such as electrical peripheral nerve stimulation. We used molybdenum for microneedle fabrication, which is a biocompatible metal; it was used for the conductive layer of the needle array. To evaluate the performance of the fabricated electro

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for phantom pain and stump pain in adult amputees.

Following amputation, 50% to 90% of individuals experience phantom and/or stump pain. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) may prove to be a useful adjunct analgesic intervention, although a recent systematic review was unable to judge effectiveness owing to lack of quality evidence. The aim of this pilot study was to gather data on the effect of TENS on phantom pain and stump pain at rest and on movement. Ten individuals with a transtibial amputation and persistent moderate-to-severe phantom and/or stump pain were recruited. Inclusion criteria was a baseline pain score of ≥3 usi

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for reduction of pruritus in macular amyloidosis and lichen simplex.

Lichen simplex (LS) is characterized by circumscribed, lichenified, pruritic patches that may develop on any part of the body. Macular amyloidosis (MA) is the form of primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) uses a pulsed electric current generated transcutaneously by a device to cause impulses to be carried along large-diameter afferent nerves. In this article, we report the effects of TENS on the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) measures and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores in patients with pruritus, in whom LS and MA were diagnosed.

Treatment of pruritus of reactive perforating collagenosis using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

Reactive perforating collagenosis is a form of perforating dermatosis due to transepithelial elimination of collagen and characterized by itchy papulonodular eruptions frequently seen in patients with diabetes mellitus and end stage renal failure. Pruritus is often severe and treatment is difficult. Two adult Chinese diabetic patients with acquired reactive perforating collagenosis unresponsive to topical therapies and oral antihistamines, were treated with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. There was a significant reduction of itch followed by gradual resolution of the skin lesions.
