BACKGROUND: Across Europe, Canada, and the United States, 22-43 % of transgender (trans) people report a history of suicide attempts. We aimed to identify intervenable factors (related to social inclusion, transphobia, or sex/gender transition) associated with reduced risk of past-year suicide ideation or attempt, and to quantify the potential population health impact.
METHODS: The Trans PULSE respondent-driven sampling (RDS) survey collected data from trans people age 16+ in Ontario, Canada, including 380 who reported on suicide outcomes. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic reg

Few studies have sought to assess predictors of retention of racial/ethnic or sexual minorities in longitudinal health research. The purpose of this study is to investigate predictors of retention of Latino gay and bisexual men and transgender (GBT) research participants after the baseline interview. Data come from a sample of 643 Latino GBT individuals in two cities (Chicago and San Francisco). We assessed potential predictors of retention (operationalized as successful re-contact) using binary logistic regression of retention on five factors (sociodemographic/health, residential stability, a

OBJECTIVE: To estimate HIV incidence among male-to-female transgendered persons (MtF transgendered persons) who repeatedly tested for HIV antibodies at public San Francisco counseling and testing sites between July 1997 and June 2000.
METHODS: HIV seroconversions were identified and person-time of observation were estimated using the date and result of the current test and the self-reported date and result of the previous test. Factors independently associated with HIV seroconversion were determined using multivariable proportional hazard analysis.
RESULTS: HIV incidence was 7.8 per 100 pers

PURPOSE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe form of psychopathology associated with a host of negative outcomes. Some literature suggests elevated prevalence among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) samples. Elevated BPD prevalence among TGD populations could be due to factors other than BPD-specific psychopathology. Studies of TGD samples typically omit assessment of BPD, making it difficult to understand elevated BPD diagnosis. The current study explored (1) differences in BPD diagnosis among TGD patients versus cisgender patients, (2) if differences were explained by BPD-sp

Transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals need access to diverse health services in welcoming, affirming, clinically appropriate, and culturally sensitive environments. Nursing students often feel underprepared due to limited knowledge and attitudes about transgender and gender nonconforming issues, and despite growing interest, research on their care remains limited. This study explores the perspectives of nursing students nearing graduation on providing care to transgender and gender-nonconforming persons. We conducted a qualitative descriptive exploratory study at the Fondazione IRCC

There is a need for updated survey literature collected from correctional mental health professionals working within prison settings. Up to date research can add to the literature addressing the best practices for mental health treatment of the transgender incarcerated population in order to provide health care professionals and correctional staff with more effective, efficient, and widely understood intervention practices to facilitate the well-being and safety of this population. Guided by three research aims, 50 mental health professionals from 21 states throughout the United States were su

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly efficacious, but its effectiveness may be limited by poor adherence or discontinuation. Our objective was to estimate the effectiveness of real-world PrEP use in a population at increased risk of HIV infection.
SETTING: King County, Washington.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using sexually transmitted infection (STI) partner services (PS) interview data collected January 2014-August 2018 in King County, Washington, USA. During PS interviews, men who have sex with men and transgender persons who have sex with men were a

Swaziland has among the highest national adult HIV prevalence globally. There is limited knowledge of HIV vulnerabilities and prevention engagement among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons in the context of Swaziland's criminalization of consensual same-sex practices. This study explored social processes of marginalization to assess how they could potentiate HIV vulnerabilities and limit engagement in HIV prevention services. Additionally, we assessed positive change to better understand existing strategies employed by LGBT persons to challenge these HIV prevention barriers.

BACKGROUND: Studies show higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among transgender (trans) and non-binary (TNB) persons compared with the general population. Scant studies have examined non-HIV STI testing (henceforth referred to as STI testing); fewer inclusive of trans men and non-binary persons. We characterised the prevalence of STI testing and time since last STI test and gender-based differences in these outcomes among TNB persons.
METHODS: Data were analysed from a 2018 community-based participatory cross-sectional survey (n =528). Prevalence of lifetime STI testing hist

The purpose of this study is to improve understanding of HIV vulnerability and opportunities for HIV prevention within the social networks of male-to-female transgender persons in San Salvador, El Salvador. We compare HIV prevalence and behavioral data from a sample of gay-identified men who have sex with men (MSM) (n = 279), heterosexual or bisexual identified MSM (n = 229) and transgender persons (n = 67) recruited using Respondent Driven Sampling. Transgender persons consistently reported higher rates of HIV risk behavior than the rest of the study population and were significantly more lik

BACKGROUND: Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) individuals experience intimate partner violence (IPV) at twice the rates of cisgender populations. Although prior research has linked IPV to elevated HIV risk and vulnerability among TNB persons, there is limited understanding of how IPV influences key HIV prevention behaviors, such as HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, and initiation and use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). IPV experiences among TNB individuals are complex and diverse, varying by type, frequency, severity, and power and relationship dynamics, and often interse

Successful implementation of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) requires retention in PrEP care among those with an increased likelihood of HIV. This study aimed to estimate the proportion of retention on PrEP and extent to which variability in PrEP retention is associated with population-, program-, and study-specific characteristics among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender persons (TGP). We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis examining PrEP studies and conference abstracts retrieved from the PubMed and Ovid online databases, capturing demonstration projects or obse
