Coping with migration-related stressors - a qualitative study of Nepali male labour migrants.

BACKGROUND: International labour migration has become a crucial livelihood strategy, especially in countries where decently paid employment opportunities are limited. Such opportunities come with many potential benefits but also many stressors that challenge migrants' coping skills, especially when they are in a foreign environment away from their normal support network. This paper explores how labour migrants coped with migration-related stressors using a sample of male Nepali migrants. METHODS: Qualitative life histories were conducted in Kathmandu among returnee male migrants. Coping respo

Initiation and completion of treatment for latent tuberculosis infection in migrants globally: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is one of the most prevalent infections globally and can lead to the development of active tuberculosis disease. In many low-burden countries, LTBI is concentrated within migrant populations often because of a higher disease burden in the migrant's country of origin. National programmes consequently focus on screening and treating LTBI in migrants to prevent future tuberculosis cases; however, how effective these programmes are is unclear. We aimed to assess LTBI treatment initiation and outcomes among migrants, and the factors that influence bo

'Every medicine is part poison': a qualitative inquiry into the perceptions and experiences of choosing contraceptive methods of migrant Chinese women living in Australia.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, ethnic Chinese people are one of the largest, youngest and fastest growing overseas-born groups. Yet, little is known about their perceptions of contraceptive methods and their experiences with choosing one. Decisions about contraceptive methods are preference sensitive. Understanding the influencing factors of Chinese migrant women's contraceptive method choice and practices will help cater to their decision-making needs in a culturally sensitive and responsive way. METHODS: A qualitative study design underpinned by critical realism approach was used to explore Chin

Association between time spent in the Russian Federation and late presentation for HIV among Tajikistani migrants.

BACKGROUND: Between 700 thousand and 1.2 million citizens of Tajikistan currently live in the Russian Federation, one of the only countries where the HIV epidemic continues to worsen. Given the previously reported barriers to healthcare access for migrants to the Russian Federation, and the rapidly expanding HIV epidemic in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, this present study set out to determine whether these barriers impact late presentation with HIV among Tajikistani migrants upon their return to Tajikistan. METHOD: This study uses data from the Tajikistan Ministry of Health surveillance sy

A retrospective statistical review of deaths owing to migration through the southeasternmost land borders of the European Union, Greece 2000-14.

The land borders of Evros, Greece, have been a common entry point for undocumented migrants on their way to Europe through Turkey. Adverse conditions, however, have resulted in many human casualties over the years. On the Greek side, 334 cadavers were retrieved between 2000 and 2014. This study provides a detailed forensic account of the humanitarian disaster in Evros to create an official scientific record of the situation. It showcases the gravity of the global issue of migration relating to health and mortality, and encourages communication and continual improvement of the approach and patt

BACKGROUND: In the past decade, a large influx of migrants presented in Europe. Their country of origin was mainly either Syria or Eritrea. Public health institutions in host countries in Europe are challenged to screen and care for migrant populations with regard to infectious diseases. RESULTS: The search resulted in 825 papers of possible relevance for infectious diseases in migrants from Syria, of which, after screeni

Maiden visit of visceral leishmaniasis to Malwa region.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a well known public health problem in eastern parts of India. So far the cases have not been reported from Malwa plateu of Madhya Pradesh, to the best of our knowledge and available literature. We report here two cases of Visceral Leishmaniasis first time from the Malwa region. Both the cases are from the migratory population of Bihar. The diseases like Leishmaniasis which were previously restricted to endemic areas of the country are spreading to non-endemic areas along with the large migratory population, which is seen with the development of the country. The Safety and Comfort of Home: Can Medical Deportation Alleviate Suffering?

AbstractMedical deportation, or the forced removal of severely injured and chronically ill, low-income, uninsured migrants to their countries of origin, remains a practice implemented by hospitals throughout the United States. This practice has been rightfully highly criticized by immigration advocates and human rights organizations. In 2019, the U.S. government eliminated a deferred action program allowing migrants without documentation to avoid deportation while they or their relatives were undergoing lifesaving medical treatment, forcing patients with highly complex medical needs to give up

Prevalence of Tuberculosis among migrants under national screening programs: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a significant global public health threat, particularly among migrant populations. Screening policies exist in many receiving countries but differ markedly, and there is limited pooled evidence on TB and latent TB infection (LTBI) prevalence among migrants under different screening frameworks. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesize TB and LTBI prevalence among migrants and compared national screening policies to inform evidence-based public health planning. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were se

Eating disorders among international migrants: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Migrants may have elevated exposure to stressors, which can affect their physical and mental well-being. However, migrants often experience a healthy immigrant effect, the applicability of this phenomena to eating disorders is unknown. We aimed to synthesize the available literature and estimate a summary measure of prevalence odds ratio for eating disorders in migrant populations compared to local populations. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science with keywords on migration and eating disorders. Inclusion criteria involved usi

Migration and medical screening for tuberculosis.

Vulnerable populations, such as migrants and refugees, have an increased risk of tuberculosis disease, especially in the first years after arrival in the host country. The presence of migrants and refugees in Brazil exponentially grew over the period between 2011 and 2020, and approximately 1.3 million migrants from the Global South were estimated to be residing in Brazil, most of whom from Venezuela and Haiti. Tuberculosis control programs for migrants can be divided into pre- and post-migration screening strategies. Pre-migration screening aims to identify cases of tuberculosis infection (TB

Outcomes 1 year after a first episode of psychosis in migrants to the Republic of Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Migration is a robust risk factor for developing a psychotic disorder, yet there is a paucity of research on the outcomes of migrants who develop a psychotic disorder. Identifying sub-groups within FEP cohorts who have a poorer outcome, could assist in the development and delivery of more targeted interventions. AIMS: There is a paucity of research on the outcomes of migrants who develop a psychotic disorder. This study aimed to evaluate a broad range of outcomes for those with a FEP who migrated to the Republic of Ireland, including: (i) symptomatic; (ii) functional; (iii) hospit

[Infectious diseases in migrants].

The current influx of refugees and the high rate of immigration increase the prevalence and impact of infectious diseases in Europe. Infections may be detected at first contact, as a result of systematic screening or as part of general medical care. Diagnosis and treatment require special expertise and, in some cases, special precautions. The spectrum of imported infections is determined by the countries of origins of the migrants and the circumstances associated with their escape to Germany. In this article, diagnosis and treatment of the most important infectious diseases will be presented.
