One hundred fifty-three patients who underwent autologous bone marrow transplant (ABMT) were studied retrospectively to determine the frequency, outcome, and risk-factors associated with varicella-zoster infections (VZV). Forty-three patients (28%) developed VZV infection after transplant. The median onset of infection was the fifth month, with 91% of cases occurring within the first year. Thirty-three patients (77%) had localized herpes zoster, and ten patients (23%) had varicella. We recorded the incidence and degree of posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) in 29 children who had undergone autologous (n = 28) or syngeneic (n = 1) bone marrow transplantation (BMT) due to haematologic or lymphoid malignancy. Autologous bone marrow transplantation (Auto-KMT) involves harvesting of a portion of a patient's bone marrow for subsequent reinfusion and restoration of marrow function following ablative doses of cytotoxic therapy, used in the treatment of various malignancies.
