The Effectiveness of Group Therapy on the Family Functioning of Individuals under Methadone Treatment: A Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: A significant number of opioid-dependent patients in Iran are now being treated by methadone maintenance therapy (MMT). One of the social complications of substance dependency is family disorganization and a decrease in marital satisfaction. This study aimed to determine the effect of group therapy based on the transtheoretical model of change on family functioning of the patients under MMT. METHODS: In this open clinical trial, 48 married people who were between the ages of 19 and 40, and under methadone maintenance therapy had been assigned to two random groups of test and contr

Demographics, self-efficacy, benefits/barriers, stages of adopting pap testing among Korean American women.

Korean American women (KAW) experience the third highest incidence rate of cervical cancer among nine major Asian Americans. This study examined cervical cancer screening among KAW using constructs from the transtheoretical model (TTM). Using a cross-sectional survey design, 102 KAW aged 21-65 years of age were recruited through convenience sampling. Twenty-seven per cent of participants reported of never receiving a Pap smear. Women who were older and married were more likely to report being in the action/maintenance stages; women who perceived themselves to be in poor health were less likely

Becoming homeless, being homeless, and resolving homelessness among women.

The purpose of this investigation was to more comprehensively articulate the experiences of homeless women and make evidence-based inferences regarding optimal social services. This study was conducted using qualitative meta-synthesis methods. As youth, homeless women experience challenging circumstances that leave them ill-prepared to prevent and resolve homelessness in adulthood. Resolution of homelessness occurs in iterative stages: crisis, assessment, and sustained action. To enhance forward progression through these stages, nurses are encouraged to promote empowerment in concordance with

Developing a text-message library for tobacco prevention among adolescents: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Communicating the risks associated with nicotine and tobacco use to adolescents can be challenging, especially with the current tobacco market's attempt to capture the attention of youths. Text message interventions have emerged to address the need to improve tobacco risk communication. This article informs the design of a message library for tobacco risk communication that is based on the transtheoretical model and addresses the risk of multiple tobacco products. METHODS: We draw findings from this study from two phases. Phase 1 involved six remote focus group discussions (n =

Activation group program for elderly diabetic patients.

The ability to handle stress situations is essential to subjective well-being. The program "Life with diabetes" extends traditional educational approaches by a psycho-social level with emphasis on coping with the disease. It draws on the transtheoretical model of behavior change and Person-Centered Approach (PCA). Results confirm the effectiveness of group work. Values of the activation block have increased (subscales PE and A). An increase of values of positive psychological state was observed, along with a simultaneous decrease in nervousness, anxiety, depressive tendencies, and better compe

Informing school sex education using the stages of change construct: sexual behaviour and attitudes towards sexual activity and condom use of children aged 13-16 in England.

A survey of 3820 school children in England aged 13-16 years examined sexual activity using the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) Stages of Change. A quarter (26%) of teens were sexually experienced, 44.8 per cent did not use contraception and 48.9 per cent did not use condoms, every time. Past history of condom and contraceptive use, and partner willingness to use condoms were the best predictors of being in Action or Maintenance stage for condom use. Of virgins, 19.82 per cent were in Contemplation or Preparation stages for intercourse, and 85.4 per cent would use condoms every time. Sex educatio

Caregiver perspectives on safety in home dementia care.

Home safety is a significant problem for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. This focus group study is designed to gain insight into caregivers' experiences of managing safety issues and to explore application of the transtheoretical model of health behavior change (TTM) to this problem, toward development of interventions to improve safety care. Caregivers identified safety problems and management strategies, as well as barriers and factors facilitating management, that can help guide the development of interventions. Caregivers described different stages of ado

Effects of a culturally congruent intervention on cognitive factors related to drug-use recovery.

This paper describes a culturally congruent intervention to promote recovery from illegal drug use among African Americans and reports initial outcomes. The intervention was based on the transtheoretical stages-of-change model and on techniques of focused dyadic counseling and motivational interviewing. Subjects were randomly assigned to the culturally congruent intervention or to a control condition. Each condition featured a single counseling session during which drug-related and other needs were assessed and appropriate referrals offered. Posttest data indicated that subjects in the cultura

Pre-exposure prophylaxis engagement among sexual minority men in Taiwan: a behavioral health perspective.

In Taiwan, sexual minority men (SMM) account for a significant portion of new HIV cases, highlighting the need for effective prevention measures. However, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use remains limited, necessitating a comprehensive examination of barriers. This study examined PrEP engagement and its predictors among 284 SMM in Taiwan. Participants were categorized into five stages, based on the Transtheoretical Model of Health Behavior Change, reflecting distinct levels of PrEP engagement. Ordinal logistic regression, informed by the Behavioral Model of Health Service Use, identified fac

[Learning Evidence-Based Practice - Multi-Perspective Competence Development using the Example of Generalised Anxiety Disorder].

Within the framework of the evidence-based practice model of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2006), psychotherapeutic core competences are mostly formulated transdiagnostically and transtheoretically, but do not exclude the systematic consideration of symptom-specific aspects. This article provides an exemplary case study of a person suffering from a generalized anxiety disorder to illustrate how evidence-based practice can be implemented. Multi-perspective competence development can be stimulated in training through the following therapeutic areas: (1) through broad assessment an

Finding common ground on conceptualization and treatment: Reply to Bridges et al. (2026), Cox (2026), Fung et al. (2026), and McLean and Wiltsey-Stirman (2026).

This is a reply to commentaries by Bridges et al. (2026), Cox (2026), Fung et al. (2026), and McLean and Wiltsey-Stirman (2026) on the authors' original work titled "To Expose or Not to Expose: A Comprehensive Perspective on Treatment for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder" (Rubenstein et al., 2024). Their work provides insightful challenges and contributions in three areas: (1) a necessary corrective regarding our perspective on prolonged exposure therapy, (2) the transtheoretical nature of exposure, and (3) the importance of interpersonal and cultural factors in posttraumatic stress disorder. A conceptual analysis of SBIRT implementation alongside the continuum of PrEP awareness: domains of fit and feasibility.

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a supplementary intervention that can be incorporated into the Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Care Continuum, complementing initiatives and endeavors focused on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention in clinical care and community-based work. Referencing the Transtheoretical Model of Change and the PrEP Awareness Continuum, this conceptual analysis highlights how SBIRT amplifies ongoing HIV prevention initiatives and presents a distinct chance to address identified gaps. SBIRT's mechanisms show promise of fit and feasi

Cognitive behavioral therapy for tobacco cessation among government bus drivers in Patna: Results from a randomized controlled trial.

The effectiveness of CBT compared to BHE for tobacco cessation remains unclear, particularly among government bus drivers in Patna. A randomized trial involving 200 smokers (aged 35-44) assessed outcomes at baseline, 4 and 12 weeks using the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), expired carbon monoxide (CO) and the Transtheoretical Model (TTM). Results showed that 60% of the CBT group quit smoking compared to 35% in the BHE group. CBT also led to a significant reduction in FTND scores and CO levels. This suggests that CBT is more effective than BHE in tobacco cessation. The study add

Is the sequencing of change processes by stage consistent across health problems? A meta-analysis.

Clinicians and researchers applying the transtheoretical model (J.O. Prochaska, C.C. DiClemente, & J.C. Norcross, 1992) to health promotion often assume that relationships of processes and stages observed in smoking cessation can be generalized to other problems. A reanalysis of 47 cross-sectional studies determined that use of change processes varies by stage, but the sequencing of processes is not consistent across health problems. In smoking cessation, cognitive processes were used in earlier stages than were behavioral processes. In exercise adoption and diet change, use of behavioral and

'A challenge to my professional identity'- resisting the shift from over-management to self-management for back pain within an implementation trial: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: The Enhanced Transtheoretical Model Intervention (ETMI) is based on behavioral models and focuses on guiding Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) patients to self-manage symptoms and engage in recreational physical activity. While there is promising evidence that ETMI benefits patients, it is unclear how challenging it might be to implement widely. This investigation focused on the perceptions of physiotherapists trained to deliver ETMI for CLBP. DESIGN: A Qualitative study comprised of semi-structured interviews (July to November 2023). Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, coded,

Validation of measures of condom and other contraceptive use among women at high risk for HIV infection and unintended pregnancy.

This study assessed the applicability of the transtheoretical model of behavior change (J.O. Prochaska & C.C. DiClemente, 1983, 1984) to the measurement of contraceptive use among 296 women at high risk for HIV infection and transmission. Structural equation modeling suggested that a measure of general contraceptive use could be used to assess use of oral contraceptives and hormonal implants but that measurement of condom use required separate assessments for main and other partners. Self-efficacy (SE) and decisional balance scales were internally consistent for general contraceptive use, for

Stages of change in treatment-seeking pathological gamblers.

The transtheoretical model has been applied to many addictive disorders. In this study, psychometrics properties of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA) scale were evaluated in 234 pathological gamblers initiating treatment. Four components were identified--reflective of precontemplation, contemplation, action, and maintenance stages--with internal consistency from .74 to .88. Cluster analyses identified 4 patterns of responding, ranging from ambivalent to active change. The 4 clusters differed with respect to baseline gambling variables and treatment engagement and outcome

Intervention Effects on Stage of Change Membership and Transitions among Adolescent Energy Balance Behaviors.

The transition from childhood to adolescence is a crucial period for the development of healthy behaviors to be sustained later in life. With obesity a leading public health problem, the promotion of healthy behaviors has the potential to make a huge impact. The current study evaluated Stage of Change progression in a large (N = 4158) computer-delivered, Transtheoretical Model-tailored intervention focusing on physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption (FV). Markov models were used to explore stage transitions and patterns of discrete change from sixth to ninth grade. Nested model c

Condom and other contraceptive use among a random sample of female adolescents: a snapshot in time.

This study examined the sexual practices of 235 females aged 15 to 19 years and their readiness to use specific contraceptive methods for birth control and sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention. The investigation was based on the stages-of-change construct from the Transtheoretical Model (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1983, 1984). Results demonstrated that despite the availability of newer contraceptive methods (e.g., Depo-Provera), most sexually active adolescents were least resistant to using condoms and were further along in the stages of change for condom use as compared with other contr
