A median clitoral sinus, as a space canalized from epithelial cells, was distinguishable developmentally in equine fetuses from 33-mm crown-rump length (CRL) to 500-mm CRL (including a mule of 21-mm CRL). In saggital sections of the clitoris of a 480-mm CRL fetus, indentations under the transverse frenular fold were identified as lateral sinuses of the clitoris. Unlike the median sinus, they were shallow; it therefore could not be anatomically substantiated that the lateral sinuses were of sufficient depth to support the growth of the partial anaerobe Taylorella equigenitalis, the organism of

BACKGROUND: Septum presence in the maxillary sinus complicates sinus floor elevation surgery, and so it is important that septa are accurately diagnosed on preoperative imaging.
PURPOSE: Septa were observed regarding their relationship with the bony palate using cone-beam computed tomography (CT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty maxillary sinuses with dentate jaws of 15 dry skulls and a cone-beam CT unit were used. A septum was defined as a pointed bone structure, and an exostosis was defined as a rounded bone structure. The occurrence and locations of maxillary sinus septa and exostoses of mo

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the anatomical variations and morphometric characteristics of the sulci in the dural venous sinuses within the intracranial cavity, with a particular focus on sex differences and asymmetry.
METHODS: Thirty fixed cadaveric heads were used to measure the dimensions (length, width, and depth) and spatial relationships of the dural venous sinus sulci within the intracranial cavity, including the distance to the midline, distance to each other, and lateral margin of the skull. Comparisons were made between sexes and sides of the body.
RESULTS: A significant di

A man in his 80s, with a history of diabetes, hypertension and coronary artery disease, presented with bilateral painless progressive vision loss 2 years prior. His examination showed subnormal best corrected visual acuity of 20/50 and 20/80 in the right eye and left eye (LE), respectively, grade II relative afferent pupillary defect in LE, normal anterior segment, intra-ocular pressure (IOP) and defective colour vision in both eyes (BE). Fundus examination revealed optic disc pallor, disc collaterals and grade 2 hypertensive retinopathy in BE. Automated perimetry showed advanced field loss in

OBJECTIVE: Neurointerventional surgery is witnessing a growth in transvenous procedures by using endovascular devices and techniques developed, optimized, and used in the arterial system. However, major dural venous sinuses differ from arteries in their non-circular (often triangular) cross sectional geometry and in the multiple structures that protrude or cross their lumens, such as septations, false channels, ostia of draining veins (cortical and dural venous channels), intraluminal bands, and arachnoid granulations. To address this gap in the literature, we used the 'live' cadaver model pre

BACKGROUND: Intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) are pathological anastomoses between meningeal arteries and dural venous sinuses or cortical veins. Diagnosis of dAVFs can be challenging due to their broad range of clinical manifestations and the lack of specificity in their symptoms. We present a rare case of a patient with bilateral dAVFs, who was referred to our department for carotid doppler ultrasonography/transcranial color Doppler.
CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old man was referred by his treating physician for neurovascular ultrasonography due to vision impairment associated wit

INTRODUCTION: Crouzon's syndrome and sinus pericranii (SP) are rare entities. Only few cases having both the features are reported. SP most commonly drains in relation to superior sagittal sinus and their communication to major posterior dural sinuses is rare.
CASE REPORT: We report a rare case of Crouzon's syndrome with SP at a suboccipital location with termination of left transverse sinus into the SP draining further through the extracranial suboccipital and extravertebral cervical venous plexi into external jugular veins. Distal transverse sinus and sigmoid sinus on the left side were abs

We describe a novel technique of vein of Labbé preservation using balloon protection during embolisation of a transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula. A patient with refractory Cognard type IV fistula of the left transverse-sigmoid sinus and persistent pulsatile tinnitus underwent successful embolisation of the lesion via transarterial route. During embolisation, a dual lumen balloon was simultaneously inflated within the vein of Labbé, at its orifice in the transverse-sigmoid sinus junction, to prevent embolic reflux. This allowed for liquid embolic embolisation of the fistula vi

This case is a 66-yr-old woman with a 2-mo history of left-sided tinnitus. Workup with magnetic resonance angiography showed early opacification of the left sigmoid sinus and internal jugular vein as well as asymmetric and abundant opacification of the left external carotid artery branches, suspicious for a dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF). Diagnosis was confirmed with cerebral angiography, consistent with a left-sided Cognard type I dAVF.1 Initial treatment attempt was made with transarterial 6% ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (Onyx 18) embolization of feeders from the occipital and middle

We report a case of transverse sinus-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula(T-S dAVF)with venous flow congestion, which was accompanied by sigmoid sinus stenosis and treated with percutaneous transluminal sinus stenting. A 76-year-old woman presented with dementia and disturbance of consciousness. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)on admission revealed subcortical edema in the left occipital lobe and angiography demonstrated a left T-S dAVF with right transverse sinus occlusion and sigmoid sinus stenosis. Hemodynamics of the shunt flow from several feeders demonstrated retrograde flow to the s

BACKGROUND: The standard endoscopic endonasal approach gives access to the median sphenoid sinus, but not to its lateral part. We propose an endoscopic technique for lesions in the lateral sphenoid sinus.
METHOD: Based on our experience with 28 patients, we have developed a less invasive approach to the lateral recess of the sphenoid sinus, limiting the opening of the maxillary sinus while avoiding resection of the inferior turbinate and ethmoidal cells. The technique is described.
CONCLUSION: The proposed endoscopic approach is reliable and safe to treat CSF leak or tumours located within t

Maxillary sinus augmentation (MSA) and guided bone regeneration (GBR) have shown successful clinical, radiological, and histological outcomes for implant-related bone reconstruction and have been used to augment bony defects of various shapes and sizes. This study demonstrated that the lateral sinus bony window obtained during MSA can be used as an autogenous block bone graft for the augmentation of wide post-extraction defects. During the uncovering procedure performed 6 months after surgery, the grafted lateral bony window was well integrated with the adjacent native bone, and complete bone

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The superior petrosal sinus terminates anteriorly at the cavernous sinus and posteriorly at the transverse sinus. Venous variations directly connecting the superior petrosal sinus and the emissary veins of the foramen ovale are not well-recognized. We present a connecting vein, provisionally named the petrobasal vein.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biplane cerebral angiography of the bilateral internal carotid arteries and the vertebral artery acquired in 267 patients was retrospectively reviewed by 2 neuroradiologists with special interest in the existence and course of the p

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to evaluate the radiographic changes in sinus mucosal thickness (SMT) in patients with mucosal thickening of odontogenic origin after maxillary molar extraction and lateral sinus augmentation with simultaneous surgical drainage and implant placement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six patients were included in this study. The changes in SMT were evaluated using cone-beam computed tomography images produced at four time points: before extraction (T0), before surgery (T1), immediately after surgery (T2), and after prosthesis delivery (T3), and statistica

PURPOSE: To evaluate the anatomical variations of dural venous sinuses in children with external hydrocephalus, proposing a radiological grading of progressive anatomic restriction to venous outflow based on brain phase-contrast magnetic resonance venography (PC-MRV); to evaluate the correlation between positional plagiocephaly and dural sinuses patency; and to compare these findings with a control group to ascertain the role of anatomical restriction to venous outflow in the pathophysiology of external hydrocephalus.
METHODS: Brain MRI and PC MRV were performed in 97 children (76 males, 21 f

BACKGROUND: Using the transverse sinus as a conduit to treat a transverse sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula is uncommon. This report describes a minimally invasive direct puncture technique for the transverse sinus to treat a complex dural arteriovenous fistula in a hybrid operating room.
CASE: The patient was a 64-year-old man with intractable status epilepticus. Digital subtraction angiography demonstrated a right transverse sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula (Borden type II, Cognard type IIa+b). We performed a transcranial direct puncture because the femoral vein approach wa

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is a disease with a predilection for young obese women. The most common symptoms are headache, transient visual obscuration and pulsatile tinnitus. The only focal neurologic finding is false-localizing 6th cranial nerve palsy. Papilledema is usually present and this can lead to optic atrophy with progressive permanent visual loss. The earliest visual loss is constriction of peripheral visual field, usually starting with the inferior nasal quadrant. Numerous theories have been entertained as to the pathogenesis but this still remains an open controversy. The

Sinonasal and temporal bone infections may extend to the skull, skull base, meninges, pericerebral spaces, brain parenchyma, dural sinuses, deep cerebral or cortical veins, intracranial arteries and cranial nerves either via contiguous or hematogeneous spread. The site of infection dictates the sites of potential complications: orbital with ethmoid sinusitis, cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis and oculomotor palsies with sphenoid sinusitis, transverse sinus thrombophlebitis with mastoiditis and superior sagittal sinus thrombophlebitis with frontal sinusitis. All may result in brain abscess. Cong

OBJECT: The goal of this study was to document the hazards associated with pseudotumor cerebri resulting from transverse sinus thrombosis after tumor resection. Dural sinus thrombosis is a rare and potentially serious complication of suboccipital craniotomy and translabyrinthine craniectomy. Pseudotumor cerebri may occur when venous hypertension develops secondary to outflow obstruction. Previous research indicates that occlusion of a single transverse sinus is well tolerated when the contralateral sinus remains patent.
METHODS: The authors report the results in five of a total of 107 patient
