A Phox2b BAC Transgenic Rat Line Useful for Understanding Respiratory Rhythm Generator Neural Circuitry.

The key role of the respiratory neural center is respiratory rhythm generation to maintain homeostasis through the control of arterial blood pCO2/pH and pO2 levels. The neuronal network responsible for respiratory rhythm generation in neonatal rat resides in the ventral side of the medulla and is composed of two groups; the parafacial respiratory group (pFRG) and the pre-Bötzinger complex group (preBötC). The pFRG partially overlaps in the retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN), which was originally identified in adult cats and rats. Part of the pre-inspiratory (Pre-I) neurons in the RTN/pFRG serves as

Leveling up: a long-range olivary projection to the medial geniculate without collaterals to the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus in rats.

The medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) is one of the monaural cell groups situated within the superior olivary complex (SOC), a constellation of brainstem nuclei with numerous roles in hearing. Principal MNTB neurons are glycinergic and express the calcium-binding protein, calbindin (CB). The MNTB receives its main glutamatergic, excitatory input from the contralateral cochlear nucleus via the calyx of Held and converts this into glycinergic inhibition directed toward nuclei in the SOC and the ventral and intermediate nuclei of the lateral lemniscus (VNLL and INLL). Through this inhib

Development of synaptic fidelity and action potential robustness at an inhibitory sound localization circuit: effects of otoferlin-related deafness.

Sound localization involves information analysis in the lateral superior olive (LSO), a conspicuous nucleus in the mammalian auditory brainstem. LSO neurons weigh interaural level differences (ILDs) through precise integration of glutamatergic excitation from the cochlear nucleus (CN) and glycinergic inhibition from the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB). Sound sources can be localized even during sustained perception, an accomplishment that requires robust neurotransmission. Virtually nothing is known about the sustained performance and the temporal precision of MNTB-LSO inputs after

Consequences of unilateral hearing loss: time dependent regulation of protein synthesis in auditory brainstem nuclei.

Conductive hearing impairment results in marked changes in neuronal activity in the central auditory system, particularly in young animals [Tucci, D.L., Cant, N.B., Durham, D., 1999. Conductive hearing loss results in a decrease in central auditory system activity in the young gerbil. Laryngoscope 109, 1359-1371]. To better understand the effects of conductive hearing loss (CHL) on cellular metabolism, incorporation of (3)H-leucine was used as a measure of protein synthesis in immature postnatal day 21 gerbils subjected to either unilateral CHL by malleus removal or profound sensorineural hear

Enhanced temporal response properties of anteroventral cochlear nucleus neurons to broadband noise.

Compared with auditory nerve (AN) fibers, trapezoid body (TB) fibers of the cat show enhanced synchronization to low-frequency tones. This phenomenon probably contributes to the high temporal resolution of binaural processing. We examined whether enhanced synchronization also occurs to sustained broadband noise. We recorded responses to a reference Gaussian noise and its polarity-inverted version in the TB of barbiturate-anesthetized cats. From these we constructed shuffled autocorrelograms (SACs) and quantified spike timing by measuring the amplitude and width of their central peak. Many TB f

Sex-specific loss of mitochondrial membrane integrity in the auditory brainstem of a mouse model of Fragile X Syndrome.

Sound sensitivity is a common sensory complaint for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). How and why sounds are perceived as overwhelming by affected people is unknown. To process sound information properly, the brain requires high activity and fast processing, as seen in areas like the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) of the auditory brainstem. Recent work has shown dysfunction in mitochondria in a genetic model of ASD, Fragile X Syndrome (FXS). Whether mitochondrial functions are also altered in sound-processing neurons has not been characterized yet. To address this questi

Strengthening of the Efferent Olivocochlear System Leads to Synaptic Dysfunction and Tonotopy Disruption of a Central Auditory Nucleus.

The auditory system in many mammals is immature at birth but precisely organized in adults. Spontaneous activity in the inner ear plays a critical role in guiding this maturation process. This is shaped by an efferent pathway that descends from the brainstem and makes transient direct synaptic contacts with inner hair cells. In this work, we used an α9 cholinergic nicotinic receptor knock-in mouse model (of either sex) with enhanced medial efferent activity (Chrna9L9'T, L9'T) to further understand the role of the olivocochlear system in the correct establishment of auditory circuits. Two New Species of Stygobiotic Amphipod Niphargus (Amphipoda: Niphargidae) and their Phylogenetic Relationship with Other Congeners from Iran.

Two new amphipod species from Iran, Niphargus sahandensis sp. nov. and Niphargus chaldoranensis sp. nov., are described based on their morphological characteristics and molecular analyses. Bayesian inference analyses of COI and 28s rDNA sequence data provided evidence for the validity of the two species and their placement in the Niphargus genus. N. sahandensis sp. nov. primarily differs from similar species by having more than two hook-like retinacles on the inner surface of pleopods I-III, the presence of two spines at the base of uropod I and rectangular-shaped propodi in both gnathopods. The trabecular anatomy of thoracolumbar vertebrae: implications for burst fractures.

The gross osseous anatomy of the spine has been the subject of much study but the internal architecture and trabecular anatomy of thoracolumbar vertebrate has not previously been well described. This study is based on high resolution x-ray images of 56 isolated thoracolumbar vertebrae and thick sections obtained from them. A previously undescribed array of trabeculae was documented which originated from the medial corner of the base of the pedicles and extended in a radial array throughout the vertebral body. This trabecular array persisted even in severely osteoporotic specimens. The cortex o

A retrospective review of long anterior fusions to the sacrum.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: In the setting of tumor, infection, or trauma, a corpectomy of the L5 vertebral body may be necessary. However, the space has an irregular trapezoidal shape, and the failure to account for this may lead to improper fitting of the titanium cages or the allograft struts when performing a reconstruction. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the failure rate of implants used to reconstruct the anterior lumbar spine when an L5 corpectomy has been performed. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records and radiographs of 19 consecutive patients undergoin

Roles of Size, Position, and Speed of Stimulus in Vection with Stimuli Projected on a Ground Surface.

INTRODUCTION: Although the induction of vection (perception of illusory self-motion) has been studied for some decades, the effect of ground surface properties on vection remains to be assessed quantitatively. This study will be helpful for designing helicopter or airplane flight simulation, because pilots often perceive optic flow on the ground surface and perceive self-motion from such flows. METHOD: Vection stimuli of variable position, size, and optic flow speed were presented in a trapezoidal area on a ground surface. Body sway was also measured. RESULTS: Substantial vection was induced

Physiological and anatomical development of glycinergic inhibition in the mouse superior paraolivary nucleus following hearing onset.

Neural circuits require balanced synaptic excitation and inhibition to ensure accurate neural computation. Our knowledge about the development and maturation of inhibitory synaptic inputs is less well developed than that concerning excitation. Here we describe the maturation of an inhibitory circuit within the mammalian auditory brainstem where counterintuitively, inhibition drives action potential firing of principal neurons. With the use of combined anatomical tracing and electrophysiological recordings from mice, neurons of the superior paraolivary nucleus (SPN) are shown to receive converg

Repopulating microglia recapitulate developmental characteristics during a period of auditory circuit recovery.

Precision in auditory brainstem circuitry is essential for sound localization and higher levels of processing. Assembly of this circuitry requires specialized developmental mechanisms, including multipartite signaling between neurons and glia. Microglia populate the developing auditory brainstem nuclei lateromedially, appearing first in the ventral cochlear nucleus, and later in the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body. Microglia increase in number just after hearing onset, then reduce to stable levels following a period of synaptic refinement. We previously showed that early microglia depleti

Glomus tympanicum chemodectomas: radiographic and clinical characteristics.

Glomus tympanicum chemodectomas are benign neoplasms that develop from normal glomus bodies located along the Jacobson (tympanic) nerve in the middle ear. The medical charts and radiographic studies of 55 patients with these tumors were reviewed. Women outnumbered men in a ratio of 3.5:1, and the patients' average age when they initially reported symptoms was 52 years. Tinnitus, ear pulsations, and diminished hearing were the most frequent symptoms. No patient had a second chemodectoma, and none of seven patients who were tested had elevated neuroendocrine compounds. Review of the radiographic
