Posttraumatic stress symptoms, coping, and physical health status among university students seeking health care.

This study examined posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, coping, and physical health status in students reporting a trauma history (N = 138) using structural equation modeling. Participants completed questionnaires assessing PTSD symptoms, coping specific to health-related and trauma-related stressors and physical health. After accounting for coping with health-specific problems, trauma-specific avoidance coping was uniquely associated with poorer health status. Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms were associated with poorer physical health status, controlling for age, health beha

The impact of hurricane trauma and cultural stress on posttraumatic stress among hurricane Maria survivors relocated to the U.S. mainland.

OBJECTIVES: Following Hurricane Maria, scores of Puerto Rican "Maria migrants" fled the island with thousands permanently resettling on the United States (U.S.) mainland. Emerging evidence suggests that many Maria migrants are exposed to migration-related cultural stressors, including discrimination, negative context of reception, and language stress. The present study examines the associations of premigration hurricane trauma and postmigration cultural stress with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity and positive PTSD screens. METHOD: Participants were 319 adult (age 18+, 71

Psychological distress of parents in conflict areas: the mediating role of war atrocities, normative stressors and family resources.

BACKGROUND: Despite the ongoing controversy regarding which types of stressors or resources contribute to psychological distress, there has been little research examining the relationship between war trauma, normative stressors, family resources for management and psychopathology. AIMS: This study investigated the differences between mothers and fathers in psychological distress, normative stressors and war atrocities experienced, and family's resources for management. It was hypothesized that a combination of risk variables and protective variables would be predictive of psychological distre

Trauma-associated sleep disturbances among women in a nationwide study.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-associated sleep disorder is a proposed sleep disorder characterized by trauma-related nightmares, hyperarousal during sleep, and disruptive nocturnal behaviors following exposure to a traumatic event. Sleep problems are common after trauma, yet little is known about their prevalence among women in the general population. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of trauma-associated sleep disturbances (TASD) and identify associated factors in a large nationally representative cohort. METHODS: We used data from a population-based cohort of Icelandic women aged 18 to 69 years. Of

Intimate Partner Support as a Critical Source of Social Support on Women's Post-Trauma Mental Recovery: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters and child loss is strongly linked to trauma- and stressor-related disorders. This study examined how different sources of social support relate to PTSD and prolonged grief disorder (PGD) symptoms among women who lost a child in an earthquake. A cross-sectional survey with structured interviews and standardized instruments was conducted among 226 participants. Clinically significant PGD symptoms were reported by 89%, and PTSD symptoms by 54%, with 80% experiencing comorbidity. Having a supportive, affectionate, and confiding relationship wi

Relational stressors as predictors for repeat aggressive and self-harming incidents in child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient settings.

This study examined whether relational stressors such as psychosocial stressors, the therapist's absence and a change of therapist are associated with repeat aggressive or self-harming incidents in child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient care. The study data were derived from critical incident reports and chart reviews of 107 inpatients. In multinomial regression analysis, patients with repeat aggressive or self-harming incidents were compared with patients with single incidents. Results suggested that a higher number of psychosocial stressors and a change of therapist, but not the therapis

[The present and future of anxiety disorders: a view and problems to DSM-5: panic disorder].

Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare shows that the estimated number of all patients with any anxiety disorders is more than ten million, while the number of all depressive patients is about six million. Thus, anxiety disorders are very important in daily clinical situation of psychiatry. Recently, DSM-5 draft posted online (http://www.dsm5.org). Many of the disorders that were previously listed in the anxiety disorders chapter in DSM-IV have been distributed throughout this chapter as well as separate chapters on obsessive-compulsive and related disorders and trauma-and stressor-re

Long-term psychiatric consequences of exposure to trauma in Cambodia: a regional household survey.

The long-term psychiatric consequences of exposure to war and/or mass conflict continue to be of great concern and particularly in Cambodia. The current cross-sectional study examined the relationship between history of trauma and current psychiatric and functional morbidity in 3200 randomly selected adults aged 18-60 in Cambodia. Structured interviews were conducted from November 2011 until May 2012 in two predominantly rural regions purposively selected for differing duration of exposure to the Khmer Rouge occupation. Information was also collected regarding ongoing daily stressors and intim

Adverse childhood experiences and risk for suicidal behavior in male Iraq and Afghanistan veterans seeking PTSD treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with increased risk for suicide and appear to occur in disproportionately high rates among men who served in the U.S. military. However, research has yet to examine a comprehensive range of ACEs among Iraq/Afghanistan veterans with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or whether these premilitary stressors may contribute to suicidal behavior in this highly vulnerable population. METHOD: A sample of 217 men entering a residential program for combat-related PTSD completed measures for ACEs, combat exposure, and lifeti

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors for anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and stress disorders: A 3-level network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and stress-related disorders frequently co-occur, and patients often present symptoms of several domains. Treatment involves the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), but data on comparative efficacy and acceptability are lacking. We aimed to compare the efficacy of SSRIs, SNRIs, and placebo in multiple symptom domains in patients with these diagnoses over the lifespan through a 3-level network meta-analysis. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We searched for published and unpublished

A house is not a home: Modeling the effects of social support and connection within resettled refugee populations.

AIM: The U.S. resettlement program currently resettles refugees in communities of similar or the same ethnic background known as like-ethnic communities. This practice provides resettled refugees with a familiar community who may be able to provide support through the difficult resettlement process. However, by associating with a like-ethnic community, resettled refugees may limit interaction with the host community, which may have subsequent adverse effects on well-being. METHODS: This study examined whether satisfaction with community support is moderated by a premigration factor (trauma hi

Th17/T regulator cell balance and NK cell numbers in relation to psychosis liability and social stress reactivity.

BACKGROUND: Psychotic disorders are characterized by a deranged immune system, including altered number and function of Natural Killer (NK) and T cells. Psychotic disorders arise from an interaction between genetic vulnerability and exposure to environmental risk factors. Exposure to social adversity during early life is particularly relevant to psychosis risk and is thought to increase reactivity to subsequent minor daily social stressors. Virtual reality allows controlled experimental exposure to virtual social stressors. AIM: To investigate the interplay between social adversity during ear

Clinical Presentation and Treatment Trajectory of Gender Minority Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Gender minorities experience unique minority stressors that increase risk for psychiatric disorders. Notably, gender minorities are four and six times more likely than their cisgender female and male peers, respectively, to be treated for or diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Despite higher rates of OCD, more psychiatric comorbidities, and minority stressors, little is known about the clinical presentation and treatment outcomes of gender minorities with OCD. Using a sample of 974 patients in specialty treatment programs for OCD, the current study found that gender minorities

Concurrent posttraumatic stress disorder in psychogeriatric patients.

Despite the fact that there are over 11 million World War II veterans in the United States, recent research on combat-related trauma has focused primarily on symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Vietnam veterans. Several studies have found that the majority of Vietnam veterans who meet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, ed 3 (DSM-III) criteria for PTSD have an additional major psychiatric diagnosis. This study explores the presence of the diagnosis of PTSD in an inpatient sample of 42 World War II veterans with an admission diagnosis other than PTSD. Foll

Effects of traumatic stress on endothelial and cardiac autonomic functions.

Traumatic stress is a psychobiological response to an overwhelming life event that exceeds the individual's capacity to cope. Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to traumatic stress: whether or not it results in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to examine the relationship between trauma-related psychiatric symptoms and markers of endothelial and cardiac autonomic function. A list of potentially traumatic life events and the self-report PTSD Symptom Checklist-5 were administered to 132 adults. To evaluate the endotheli

Trauma descriptions and lived experiences: a phenomenological exploratory study among patients with severe mental illness in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: The definition of trauma used in current diagnostic and classification systems excludes culturally influenced conceptualizations of trauma, which may not involve an immediate threat to life or physical injury but a set of adversities and stressors. A culturally sensitive definition of trauma may contribute to increased identification of those at risk of developing trauma sequelae resulting in timely interventions. This formulation is particularly important for individuals living with mental disorders. The objective of this paper was to explore trauma descriptions and experiences am

PTSD Symptoms and Hazardous Drinking Indicators among Trauma-Exposed Sexual Minority Women during Heightened Societal Stress.

Trauma-exposed sexual minority women (SMW) are at elevated risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and hazardous drinking compared to trauma-exposed heterosexual women. To understand whether these problems might be exacerbated during times of elevated societal stress, we collected data from a New York-based sample of trauma-exposed SMW between April 2020 and August 2020, a period of notable, compounding societal stressors, including: (a) living in or near one of the first epicenters of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic in the United States and (b) living through multiple hi

State of the Science: The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders.

Before the development of the Unified Protocol for the Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP), evidence-based treatment options for commonly co-occurring anxiety, mood, and related disorders consisted of numerous single-disorder protocols that shared many similarities, reflecting the overlap among these disorders themselves. The UP distilled common elements of cognitive behavioral protocols into a unified intervention directly targeting core temperamental features underlying these disorders of emotion, namely neuroticism and associated emotion dysregulation. The UP has since bec

Despite the obstacles: consistent treatment effects for traumatized refugees regardless of asylum status change.

Background: The prevalence of mental disorders is high among refugees and asylum seekers due to past traumatic experiences and post-migration stressors, such as uncertain asylum status. Specialized psychosocial treatment centers aim to address this complex interplay between clinical symptoms and social stressors. Thus far, evidence for the effectiveness of such multidisciplinary treatment approaches is mixed, and the influence of post-migration stressors like asylum status changes over the course of treatment has not yet been thoroughly investigated. Objective: The present study aimed to evalua
