Infection with a novel derogenid trematode in a Flap-necked chameleon (Chamaeleo dilepis).

A 2-year-old female Flap-necked chameleon (Chamaeleo dilepis) was presented with a history of anorexia. On physical examination, three 11×4×2 mm, light tan-pink, raised, gelatinous, freely movable, poorly demarcated, raised nodules were identified within the oral cavity. An impression smear contained multiple, light blue to green structures exhibiting an 18×35 μm, elliptical-shaped anterior portion and a single 1×150 μm filament with a tapered end. Initial differential etiologies included trematode ova, flagellate protozoa, fungal sporangia, plant material, and sperm. Fungal culture yielded no

Whole transcriptome profiling of adult and infective stages of the trematode Opisthorchis felineus.

Opisthorchis felineus, the trematode belonging to the family Opisthorchiidae, is a causative agent of the infection called opisthorchiasis or liver fluke infection. Being a close relative of Opisthorchis viverrini and Clonorchis sinensis (oriental liver flukes) it is encountered in northern Eurasia, especially in Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Ukraine, and Baltic countries. Whole genome data for oriental liver flukes revealed their adaptations for life in the bile duct but our knowledge of O. felineus is scarce. To address this knowledge gap and uncover evolutionary aspect of the adaptations on

Experimental infection with the small intestinal trematode, Haplorchis pumilio, in young dogs.

Fishborne zoonotic trematodes (FZT) are highly prevalent in Southeast Asia. Recent studies on the role of domestic animals in the transmission of FZT in Northern Vietnam found that dogs, mainly infected with Haplorchis pumilio, contributed widely to the transmission of FZT. On this background, we conducted an experimental infection with H. pumilio to elucidate population dynamics and host reactions in dogs. Eight household-reared dogs (3-6 months old), were each orally infected with 500 H. pumilio metacercariae obtained by artificial digestion of naturally infected fish. Another eight dogs wer

Relative toxicity of malathion to trematode-infected and noninfected Rana palustris tadpoles.

Amphibian populations around the world are facing threats that include disease and pollution. Although the effect of environmental contaminants on susceptibility to infection has been demonstrated for several amphibian species, to our knowledge, the opposite interaction, infection status affecting contaminant susceptibility, has not been studied. We conducted standard 48-h toxicity tests to compare susceptibility to malathion, a widely used organophosphate insecticide, of uninfected pickerel frog (Rana palustris) tadpoles and tadpoles infected with two levels (10 or 30 cercariae) of the tremat

The benefits of coinfection: trematodes alter disease outcomes associated with virus infection.

Coinfections are increasingly recognized as important drivers of disease dynamics. Consequently, greater emphasis has been placed on integrating principles from community ecology with disease ecology to understand within-host interactions among parasites. Using larval amphibians and two amphibian parasites (ranaviruses and the trematode Echinoparyphium sp.), we examined the influence of coinfection on disease outcomes. Our first objective was to examine how priority effects (the timing and sequence of parasite exposure) influence infection and disease outcomes in the laboratory. We found that

Occurrence and distribution of yellow grub trematodes (Clinostomum complanatum) infection in Taiwan.

Digenetic trematodes of the genus Clinostomum are widely distributed in many species of freshwater fish and are known to cause the zoonotic disease Halzoun. Humans may become accidental hosts if they ingest raw freshwater fish containing metacercaria of Clinostomum complanatum, which causes pharyngitis or laryngitis. The yellow grub parasitizing cultivated ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) and loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) was one of the most serious problems in fish farms from 1977 to 1979 in Taiwan. The present study revealed, for the first time, frequent occurrence of C. complanatum metacer

Pathological and parasitological characterization of infection by trematodes (Paramphistomatidae) in the large intestine of capybaras.

Gross and histological lesions caused by an intestinal parasite were described in three capybaras. The parasites presented a mean length of 14 mm and width of 7 mm, were round to oval or piriform, reddish and pedunculated, and adhered strongly to the mucosa of the large intestine. The intestinal mucosa at the parasite attachment site presented loss of surface epithelium and most glands, with replacement by fibrovascular proliferation that protruded from the mucosa and was involuted by the ventral sucker of the parasite. The lamina propria presented cellular debris, eosinophils, macrophages and

Mesocestoides corti: parameters of infection in CBA/Ca mice and the effect of introducing a concomitant trematode infection.

CBA/Ca mice infected with the tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides corti were exposed to Schistosoma mansoni cercariae either simultaneously, or at varying intervals after the initial M. corti infection. Cohorts were infected with either parasite alone. The dual infected mice and the mice harbouring M. corti alone were significantly heavier than either naive controls or mice carrying the S. mansoni infection only. The livers and spleens from dual infection mice were also found to be significantly heavier than those from other groups. Free M. corti tetrathyridia were reduced in number in the peritone

Fish-borne trematode metacercarial infections as bioindicators for heavy-metal contamination in cyprinoid fish from Northeastern Thailand.

In Southeast Asia, consumption of raw or undercooked cyprinoid fish poses dual health concerns: transmission of zoonotic fish-borne trematodes (FBTs) and exposure to heavy metals that have bioaccumulated in fish. We investigated the association between heavy-metal contamination and FBT metacercarial infections in cyprinoid fish from canals connected to the Huay Luang River, Udon Thani Province, Thailand, during the 2024 rainy season. In total, 1377 fish were examined for metacercariae using the pepsin digestion method. Concentrations of five heavy-metals (Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Pb) were quantifie

Concurrent infections of the trematode Echinostoma caproni and the tapeworms Hymenolepis diminuta and Hymenolepis microstoma in mice.

Superimposing the intestinal tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta on an established infection with the trematode Echinostoma caproni or simultaneous infection of mice with H. diminuta and Hymenolepis microstoma caused destrobilation and expulsion of H. diminuta, whereas establishment and growth of H. microstoma under the same infection regimes were not affected. In contrast, simultaneous superimposition of H. diminuta and H. microstoma on an established E. caproni infection caused destrobilation and expulsion of both H. diminuta and H. microstoma.

Perfluoroalkyl Substances Increase Susceptibility of Northern Leopard Frog Tadpoles to Trematode Infection.

Per/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are contaminants of emerging concern that can impair immune function, yet few studies have tested whether exposure increases infection risk. Using laboratory experiments, we found that exposure to 10 ppb of perfluorohexanesulfonic acid increased trematode (Echinoparyphium lineage 3) infections in larval northern leopard frogs (Lithobates pipiens). However, there was no effect of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid. Our results demonstrate that PFAS can potentially enhance infection risk in natural systems. Investigation on the zoonotic trematode species and their natural infection status in Huainan areas of China.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the species of zoonotic trematodes and the endemic infection status in the domestic animals in Huainan areas, north Anhui province of China, we intent to provide evidences for prevention of the parasitic zoonoses. METHODS: The livestock and poultry (definitive hosts) were purchased from the farmers living in the water areas, including South Luohe, Yaohe, Jiaogang and Gaotang Lakes, and dissected the viscera of these collected hosts to obtain the parasitic samples. Then the specimens were microscopically identified, with reference to the descriptions in previous lite

Host density and competency determine the effects of host diversity on trematode parasite infection.

Variation in host species composition can dramatically alter parasite transmission in natural communities. Whether diverse host communities dilute or amplify parasite transmission is thought to depend critically on species traits, particularly on how hosts affect each other's densities, and their relative competency as hosts. Here we studied a community of potential hosts and/or decoys (i.e. non-competent hosts) for two trematode parasite species, Echinostoma trivolvis and Ribeiroia ondatrae, which commonly infect wildlife across North America. We manipulated the density of a focal host (green

New insights into trematode infections in cattle and their snail intermediate hosts in a Mediterranean area of Italy.

This study investigated snails collected from eleven cattle farms in a Mediterranean area of southern Italy, where Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) and Calicophoron daubneyi (rumen fluke) are known to occur. A total of 319 snails were collected from various aquatic habitats across the selected farms and identified using morphological and molecular analysis. BLAST analysis revealed two snail species: Galba truncatula (56.7 %) and Physella acuta (43.3 %). Statistical analyses revealed that shell and aperture lengths differed significantly between the two snail species. A subset of 130 snails was

Filtration and respiration responses of mussels (Mytilus edulis) to trematode parasite infections (Renicola roscovita) and transient heat exposure.

The mussel Mytilus edulis, a host to various trematode species, experiences performance decrements due to these infections. Yet, the impact magnitude and potential interactions with environmental stressors remain largely unexplored. This study scrutinizes the effect of Renicola roscovita infections on mussel filtration and respiration. We first assessed performance in both uninfected and lab-infected mussels at a mild temperature (16 °C), following an acute heat ramp to 30.5 °C and subsequent cooling. The experiment revealed neither a significant direct impact of the infection on the mussels'

Population dynamics and diversity of trematode infections in Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos in an irrigated area in northeast Thailand.

Several trematodes including Opisthorchis viverrini utilize Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos as a snail intermediate host in their life cycles. In order to capture a comprehensive range of host–parasite interactions and their transmission dynamic patterns, B. s. goniomphalos were sampled monthly over 4 consecutive years in an irrigated paddy-field habitat in northeast Thailand. Using a standard cercarial shedding method, a high diversity of trematodes (17 types) was recovered. Virgulate xiphidiocercariae were the most prevalent (7.84%) followed by O. viverrini (0.71%). In addition to seasonal a
