Transmission loss in manatee habitats.

The Florida manatee is regularly exposed to high volumes of vessel traffic and other human-related noise because of its coastal distribution. Quantifying specific aspects of the manatee's acoustic environment will allow for a better understanding of how these animals respond to both natural and human-induced changes in their environment. Transmission loss measurements were made in 24 sampling sites that were chosen based on the frequency of manatee presence. The Monterey-Miami Parabolic Equation model was used to relate environmental parameters to transmission loss in two extremely shallow wat

Circulation of Giardia duodenalis in domestic and wild animals from Amazon region: A systematic review.

Giardia is an ubiquitous protozoa that infect a broad range of vertebrate hosts, including domestic and wild animals as well as humans. Giardia duodenalis is one of the most common parasite in humans and mammals worldwide. Human giardiasis is highly prevalent in the countries that make up from Amazon. The identification of genotypes in humans and animals improves the understanding of transmission routes and the control strategies. Thus, we carried out a systematic review on Giardia in animals from Amazon region/South American, following the PRISMA guidelines. Studies up to September, 2022 were

Implications of Scientific Collaboration Networks on Studies of Aquatic Vertebrates in the Brazilian Amazon.

The quantity of wildlife extracted from the Amazon has increased in the past decades as a consequence of an increase in human population density and income growth. To evaluate the spatial distribution of studies on subsistence and/or commercial hunting conducted in the Brazilian Amazon, we selected eight mid-sized and large-bodied aquatic vertebrate species with a history of human exploitation in the region. We used a combination of searches in the gray and scientific literature from the past 24 years to provide an updated distributional map of studies on the target species. We calculated the

[Recurrent skin problems in a manatee: the diagnostic approach].

A 40-year-old manatee was referred with recurrent vesicular and ulcerative dermatosis for the past 15 years. During this period the animal was anorectic and lost weight. Differential diagnoses were formulated on the basis of the history and clinical signs. Skin scrapings, bacterial and fungal culture, cytological examination, blood examination, and histopathological examination of skin biopsies narrowed this list down to autoimmune dermatosis. Despite corticosteroid therapy the symptoms recurred and the animal died. Histopathological examination of post-mortem skin biopsies showed again autoim

Ecological forensic testing: Using multiple primers for eDNA detection of marine vertebrates in an estuarine lagoon subject to anthropogenic influences.

Many critical aquatic habitats are in close proximity to human activity (i.e., adjacent to residences, docks, marinas, etc.), and it is vital to monitor biodiversity in these and similar areas that are subject to ongoing urbanization, pollution, and other environmental disruptions. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is an accessible, non-invasive genetic technique used to detect and monitor species diversity and is a particularly useful approach in areas where traditional biodiversity monitoring methods (e.g., visual surveys or video surveillance) are challenging to conduct. In this study,

Development of the cornea of true moles (Talpidae): morphogenesis and expression of PAX6 and cytokeratins.

Corneal development and structure were studied in the Iberian mole Talpa occidentalis, which has permanently closed eyelids, and the European mole Talpa europaea, in which the eyes are open. The vertebrate cornea typically maintains a three-layered structure - a stratified epithelium with protective and sensory function, an avascular, hypocellular, collagenous stroma, and an endothelium with both barrier and transport functions that regulates corneal hydration, hence maintaining transparency. Compared to mouse, both mole species had significant corneal specializations, but the Iberian mole had

XANTHINE NEPHROLITHIASIS IN JUVENILE CAPTIVE GIANT OTTERS (PTERONURA BRASILIENSIS).

Nephrolithiasis has been reported in several aquatic mammals including bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), small clawed otters (Amblonyx cinereus), European river otters (Lutra lutra), North American river otters (Lontra canadensis), northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris), Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris), and California sea lions (Zalophus californianus). Compositions of calculi in previous cases were predominantly calcium oxalate or ammonium acid urate. Xanthine urolithiasis is rare in veterinary medicine. Primary cases (without exposure to xanthine dehydrog

Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia sp. in aquatic mammals in northern and northeastern Brazil.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are protozoans that can infect humans and wild and domestic animals. Due to the growing importance of diseases caused by protozoan parasites in aquatic species, we aimed to evaluate the frequency of infection by Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia sp. in aquatic and marine mammals in the northern and northeastern regions of Brazil. We collected 553 fecal samples from 15 species of wild-ranging and captive aquatic mammals in northern and northeastern Brazil. All samples were analyzed by the Kinyoun technique for identification of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts. Giardia sp

Sink or swim? Bone density as a mechanism for buoyancy control in early cetaceans.

Previous analyses have shown that secondarily aquatic tetrapods, including whales, exhibit osteological adaptations to life in water as part of their complex buoyancy control systems. These structural specializations of bone span hyperostosis through osteoporosis. The past 15 years of paleontological effort has provided an unprecedented opportunity to examine the osteological transformation of whales as they make their transition to an obligate aquatic lifestyle over a 10-million-year period. It is hypothesized that whales manifest their osteological specialization in the same manner as extant

Animal reactions to oncoming vehicles: a conceptual review.

Animal-vehicle collisions (AVCs) are a substantial problem in a human-dominated world, but little is known about what goes wrong, from the animal's perspective, when a collision occurs with an automobile, boat, or aircraft. Our goal is to provide insight into reactions of animals to oncoming vehicles when collisions might be imminent. Avoiding a collision requires successful vehicle detection, threat assessment, and evasive behaviour; failures can occur at any of these stages. Vehicle detection seems fairly straightforward in many cases, but depends critically on the sensory capabilities of a

Demographic identification of Greater Caribbean manatees via acoustic feature learning.

Demographic inference from vocalizations is essential for monitoring endangered Greater Caribbean manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus) in tropical environments where direct observation is limited. While passive acoustic monitoring has proven effective for manatee detection and individual identification, the ability to classify sex and age from vocalizations remains unexplored, limiting ecological insights into population structure and reproductive dynamics. We investigated whether machine learning can accurately classify sex and age from manatee acoustic signals using 1,285 vocalizations from
