A survey of gastrointestinal nematodes in Georgia cattle was conducted from 1968 through 1973 from actual worm counts from viscera of 145 slaughtered beef cattle or from egg counts made from fecal samples from 3,273 beef and 100 dairy cattle. Beef cattle were grouped as calves, yearlings, and cows. Dairy cattle were grouped as calves, replacement heifers, and cows. Results of fecal examinations positive; 99.5, 99.3, 99.6, and 41.2% of the calves, yearlings, drylot calves, and cows, respectively, were infected with nematodes. Seventy-four percent of the eggs counted were of the Cooperia-Osterta

Large scale studies were performed to determine the prevalence of various intestinal helminth infections in urban and rural areas of Khuzestan Province, southwest Iran. A total of 16,361 stool samples from people in 105 villages and 14 small towns were examined by the formalin-ether concentration method. Ascaris, hookworms, Trichostrongylus, Trichuris, and Hymenolepis nana showed the highest prevalence. Hookworms and Trichostrongylus were twice as prevalent in rural than in urban areas; in contrast, H. nana was more prevalent in urban areas while the level of Ascaris infections was not signifi

The composition of, and seasonal changes in, populations of gastrointestinal parasites of calves in northeast Mississippi were determined for 10 months post-weaning. After weaning on 15 October, 20 mixed breed beef steers were grazed together on a 4 ha fescue/bermudagrass pasture. From November through August of the following year, two of the calves were removed each month for necropsy and counting of gastrointestinal nematodes. Eight species of worms were found: Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus axei, Bunostomum phlebotomum, Cooperia spp., Trichostrongylus colubriformi

Trichostrongylus infection, an uncommonly reported zoonosis in Australia, is common in parts of the world where there is close human contact with herbivorous animals. We report 5 cases diagnosed in our laboratory since 1992. Over this period the laboratory has conducted over 46,000 parasitological examinations on feces. All 5 cases were investigated for fecal parasites following detection of a blood eosinophilia. Two of the 5 cases complained of mild abdominal discomfort and diarrhea. It is likely that all obtained their infection following ingestion of contaminated unwashed vegetables which h

In many countries, widespread benzimidazole resistance in ruminant trichostrongyloids has severe effects on animal health and farm economy. In Germany, benzimidazole resistance occurs with high prevalence in sheep, but has barely been shown for cattle strongyles. In this study, the frequency of isotype-1 β-tubulin specific single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with benzimidazole resistance in trichostrongyloids on twelve sheep and nine cattle farms in northeast Germany was quantified using deep amplicon sequencing. On sheep farms, reliable data for Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circu

Trichostrongylus spp., zoonotic soil-transmitted nematodes, affect both livestock and humans globally. In Thailand, human trichostrongylosis has been reported, but no systematic study examining livestock and humans in the same locality has been conducted. This study aimed to address this gap in Satun Province, southern Thailand by characterizing the disease's epidemiologic status among livestock, farmers, and the environment using both microscopic and molecular techniques. Human risk factors were assessed via questionnaires. Stool samples were collected from livestock farmers, their families,

The prevalence of concurrent nematode-trypanosome infections in traditionally reared West African Dwarf sheep and goats in eastern Nigeria was monitored over a 12-month period during 1987-1988. The most prevalent nematodes were Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis, which usually occurred together in all nematode infected animals. Their combined prevalence rates ranged from 90 to 100% throughout the year and they accounted for 66 to 98% of the total monthly worm burdens. Of the 107 animals examined 13.6% were infected with trypanosome species comprising Trypanosoma brucei (50

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection in sheep has been recognized globally as a major problem challenging animal health and production. The objective of this study is to use a molecular diagnosis of the prevalence for gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) dominant species of Kazakh sheep and its hybrid (Kazakh × Texel). The internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) sequences of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) were used as the target sequence. In the study, three dominant species of nematodes, namely Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus spp., and Teladorsagia (Ostertagia) circumcincta from the Kazakh sheep a

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are major constraints to health and productivity of small ruminants. Methods of their control relies mainly on anthelmintic drugs; however, the indiscriminate use of these drugs could lead to the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR). This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of GINs infection, and field evaluation of anthelmintic efficacy in sheep. The epidemiological data were collected using a cross-sectional study design while a farm-based field study design was employed for the evaluation of anthelminthic efficacy. Furthermore, standard paras

In this review, the main gastrointestinal nematodes infecting cattle in Zimbabwe and the epidemiological factors influencing their occurrence are reviewed and discussed. Nineteen gastrointestinal nematode species that belong to seven families have been found to occur in cattle in Zimbabwe. The main genera reported to date are Cooperia, Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus and Oesophagostomum and the dominant species are Cooperia pectinata, Cooperia punctata, Haemonchus placei and Trichostrongylus axei. The mixed infection by several species from the genera is the cause of parasitic gastroenteritis in

The acquisition and intensity of infection with gastrointestinal nematodes and with Oestrus ovis are compared over 2 years in sheep grazed intensively (26-36 sheep ha-1) or non-intensively (12 sheep ha-1) in the winter rainfall Overberg region of South Africa. Sheep grazing intensively on grass/legume pastures, spray irrigated in summer, acquired massive mixed infections of Trichostrongylus, Haemonchus and Teladorsagia. Infections were fatal for sucking lambs. Lambs from ewes grazed non-intensively on dry land lucerne in winter became infected with Nematodirus and then with Teladorsagia and Tr

BACKGROUND: This study provides crucial insights into the prevalence and drug resistance patterns of strongylid gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) in goats in Thailand, highlighting resistance to albendazole and levamisole. Strongylids, particularly Haemonchus sp. and Trichostrongylus sp., pose a significant threat to goat health. With the global rise of anthelmintic resistance, the detection of multidrug resistance in Thailand's goat population is concerning, given the frequent import and export of goats. This resistance challenges effective parasite control strategies. This study aimed to ide

The gastrointestinal parasites of baboons have been well characterized from savannah and desert habitats, but little is known about their gastrointestinal parasites in forest habitats. From May to June 2004, we collected 41 fecal samples from free-ranging olive baboons (Papio anubis) within the forested Kibale National Park, Uganda. Samples were examined to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in this forest dwelling population of olive baboons. The prevalence of nematodes identified from fecal flotation was Oesophagostomum sp. (85%), Trichostrongylus sp. (22%), Trichuris sp.

Anthelmintic efficacy was evaluated among sheep that had become naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes in 17 flocks located in the semiarid region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Feces were collected individually from 1021 hairy sheep to determine the number of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) and for coprocultures to identify nematode genera the nematodes. Only the animals that presented EPG counts greater than or equal to 200 were included in the study (totaling 381 sheep). The animals were divided into three treatment groups: albendazole, ivermectin and levamisole. Fourteen days after the

A new hypodermal gland was discovered in female nematodes of the family Trichostrongylidae. Because the new structure appears to be associated with the vulva, it was named the perivulval pore. It is similar, based on light and scanning electron microscopy, to phasmids that are located laterally on the tails of nematodes of the class Secernentea. Like phasmids, perivulval pores are paired and bilateral, with cuticular ducts to the surface in the areas of the lateral chords. They are located slightly posterior to the vulva in Haemonchus contortus, Haemonchus placei, Haemonchus similis, Mecistoci

A study of gastrointestinal nematodes in roe deer was carried out in the regional hunting reserves of Riaño and Mampodre, Province of León, Spain, to provide information on their prevalence and intensity of infection in relation to the sampling areas, age of the animals, and body weight. Through a regulated necropsy of the animals, all of them harbored gastrointestinal nematodes in their digestive tract, with a mean intensity of parasitism of 638 ± 646.1 nematodes/infected animal. Eleven genera were found and 18 species of gastrointestinal nematodes were identified, three of them polymorphic:
