The geometric and hemodynamic determinants of functional tricuspid regurgitation severity are mainly determined by septal leaflet tethering, septal-lateral annular dilatation, and the severity of pulmonary hypertension. Isolated significant tricuspid regurgitation can occur from isolated prolapse of valvar leaflets. Tricuspid prolapse has been found more frequently to be associated with mitral valve prolapse or with other cardiac and lung diseases and it has been rarely found as an isolated finding. Isolated primitive tricuspid prolapse appears in fact a relatively unknown anatomo-clinical ent

This retrospective study attempted to establish the prevalence of multiple-valve involvement in Marfan syndrome and to compare echocardiographic with histopathologic findings in Marfan patients undergoing valvular or aortic surgery. We reviewed echocardiograms of 73 Marfan patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery from January 2004 through October 2009. Tissue histology was available for comparison in 29 patients. Among the 73 patients, 66 underwent aortic valve replacement or the Bentall procedure. Histologic findings were available in 29 patients, all of whom had myxomatous degeneration.

Three adults, 2 with tricuspid aortic valve and 1 with bicuspid valve, underwent valvuloplasty for aortic valve regurgitation resulting from cusp prolapse. Surgical procedures consisted of combined cusp plication by triangular cusp resection and subcommissural annuloplasty. Doppler echocardiography revealed trivial aortic valve regurgitation intraoperatively and less than I/IV at discharge in all cases. After mean follow-up of 15 months, 2 tricuspid aortic valve patients remain I/IV regurgitation and II/IV in the bicuspid patient. Although long-term results remain unclear, our results show tha

Pulsed Doppler echocardiography was used to determine prospectively the prevalence of mitral, aortic, tricuspid and pulmonary regurgitation in 80 consecutive patients with mitral valve prolapse and 85 normal subjects with similar age and sex distribution. Mitral valve prolapse was defined by posterior systolic displacement of the mitral valve on M-mode echocardiography of 3 mm or more (40 patients), the presence of one or more mid- or late systolic clicks (61 patients), or both. Mitral regurgitation, detected by pulsed Doppler techniques in 53 patients with prolapse, was holosystolic in 24, ea

OBJECTIVE: When mitral stenosis is associated with other valve lesions, diagnosis, prognosis and the treatment strategies are affected. Mitral valve prolapse may occur in some pathological settings that affect mitral apparatus. We investigated the incidence of valve lesions including mitral valve prolapse that accompany mitral stenosis and assessed the relation between echocardiographic measures.
METHODS: Two hundred and one patients (31 male, 170 female) between 16 and 72 years of age (mean age 40.9+/-11.4 years) with mitral stenosis were included in the study. Patients were divided into thr

Two-dimensional echocardiographic examinations were performed for 86 patients with the hypoplastic right heart syndrome (55 cases of tricuspid atresia, 9 of pure pulmonary stenosis and 22 of pure pulmonary atresia). Prolapse of the anterior mitral leaflet was detected in 14 patients (16.3%). Four of these 14 patients had mitral regurgitation. Among the patients with mitral valve prolapse, ruptured chordae tendineae of the mitral valve were detected in two, and elongation of the chordae in one. There were no significant relationships between the incidence of mitral valve prolapse and sex, age,

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to determine cusp causes of aortic regurgitation in patients with tricuspid aortic valves without significant aortic dilatation and define cusp pathologies amenable to surgical repair (aortic valve repair [AVr]) versus aortic valve replacement.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively reviewed surgical reports of consecutive adults with tricuspid aortic valves undergoing surgery for clinically significant aortic regurgitation within a prospective registry from January 2005 to September 2019. Valvular mechanisms were determined by systematic in vivo intraope

This study concerns 51 cases of mitral valve prolapse demonstrated on bidimensional 4 cavities sonography according to Gilbert's criteria and aims to determine the frequency of the associated valvular involvement, anatomically with sonography and functionally with the Doppler test. Sonography demonstrates a tricuspid valve prolapse in 79 p. cent of the cases and an aortic valve prolapse in 10 p. cent. The Doppler test demonstrates a tricuspid leakage in 52 p. cent of the cases, a pulmonary leakage in 62 p. cent, and an aortic leakage in 18 p. cent. The myxoid degeneration found in 60 p. cent o

INTRODUCTION: Tetralogy of Fallot is characterized by a non-restrictive malalignment ventricular septal defect (VSD), an overriding aorta and right ventricular outflow tract obstruction resulting from anterior deviation of the infundibular septum. Due to the large VSD, systolic pressures are equal in both ventricles. In rare cases, redundant tricuspid valve tissue may prolapse into the VSD resulting in restriction of the defect size and causing suprasystemic pressure in the right ventricle. Subaortic obstruction by prolapse of the redundant tricuspid tissue into the left ventricular outflow tr

Quadrangular resection is the gold standard technique for correction of the posterior leaflet prolapse in mitral valve disease. Prompted by the idea that the anterior leaflet of the tricuspid valve corresponds to the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve in its structure and function, we conducted a quadrangular resection of the anterior leaflet of the tricuspid valve in a case of tricuspid endocarditis. Tricuspid regurgitation was well corrected, and the durability of the repair was proven by the patient's freedom from cardiac events for the following 8 years.

BACKGROUND: For aortic dilatation with morphologically intact leaflets, valve-preserving aortic replacement has become an accepted treatment modality. Leaflet prolapse, however, may be present, making composite replacement the most frequent choice. Alternatively, valve preservation may be combined with correction of leaflet prolapse. The results of this approach should be comparable with those of valve-preserving aortic surgery in the presence of normal leaflets.
METHODS: Between 1995 and 2002, 156 patients were treated by valve-preserving surgery. The aortic valve was bicuspid in 46, and tri

We report the case of a 52-year-old man who was referred to surgery because of severe mitral and tricuspid regurgitation of Barlow's disease. In particular, the tricuspid valve was a 'four-leaflet valve' due to the presence of a small accessory leaflet between the septal and the posterior leaflets. The valve insufficiency was determined by prolapse of all leaflets (in particular of the anterior and posterior ones) associated with annular dilatation. The patient underwent both mitral and tricuspid valve repair. The tricuspid regurgitation was corrected by stitching together the middle point of

BACKGROUND: The typical cardiac manifestations of Marfan syndrome are aortic regurgitation with progressive dilatation of the aortic root, which may cause dissection and rupture of the ascending aorta, mitral valve prolapse and mitral valve regurgitation. In this study, we aimed to show echocardiographic findings in 11 patients with Marfan syndrome.
METHODS: Diagnosis of Marfan syndrome was based on the Ghent criteria. All patients had a full echocardiographic evaluation. During the evaluation, we investigated the presence of mitral valve prolapse, mitral valve regurgitation, tricuspid valve

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) in children may be secondary to congenital anomalies of the tricuspid valve complex which is composed by annulus, leaflets, commissures, chordae tendineae, and papillary muscles. The most common congenital cause is Ebstein's anomaly; however, there are less frequent causes such as abnormal number of tricuspid leaflets, tricuspid cleft, leaflet prolapse, double orifice tricuspid valve, and congenital tricuspid valve dysplasia. Identifying the precise cause is important to plan an appropriate repair surgery. In this article, the case of a 4-year-old patient with a te

A hitherto unrecognized case of van der Hoeve's syndrome complicated by Ebstein's anomaly, and prolapse of the mitral and aortic valves was reported. A 46-year-old woman presented with blue sclera, osteogenesis imperfecta and a hearing loss, which are typical symptoms of this syndrome. The electrocardiogram showed a type B WPW syndrome. The phonocardiogram showed a loud and widely split first heart sound, an accentuated protodiastolic extrasound, a decrescendo regurgitant systolic murmur, and a presystolic murmur. The x descent of the jugular phlebogram was obliterated by a markedly increased

INTRODUCTION: Tricuspid valve prolapse (TVP) is characterized by the tricuspid valve leaflets' displacement beyond the annular plane during midsystole. Although less common than mitral valve prolapse, TVP often coexists with it, sharing similar pathophysiological mechanisms. This case highlights new-onset tricuspid regurgitation (TR) following cavotricuspid isthmus ablation for atrial flutter, stressing the need for vigilant monitoring after such procedures.
CASE: A 68-year-old male with atrial flutter, coronary artery disease, and type 2 diabetes underwent cavotricuspid isthmus ablation in A

The aim of this study is to show the clinical value of the echocardiography in the heritable disorders of connective tissue, within a series of 10 cases, from 7,500 echocardiograms reviewed between 1978 and 1985. Echocardiography visualized an aneurysm of the ascending aorta in three patients, a dilatation of the pulmonary artery in one case, a mitral valve prolapse in six patients associated with an aortic and tricuspid valve prolapse in two cases, and a tricuspid valve prolapse and aortic regurgitation in one case. In two patients, an aortic valve prolapse was isolated. Other echocardiograph

We describe tricuspid valve repair using papillary muscle shortening for severe tricuspid regurgitation due to leaflet prolapse in children combined with De Vega annuloplasty. The papillary muscle was shortened until the prolapsed leaflet was at the same height as the other nonprolapsed leaflets. Although echocardiographic tricuspid regurgitation tends to increase over time, it rarely requires long-term intervention.

Real-time, phased-array, two-dimensional echocardiographic studies identified ruptured chordae tendineae in five patients: four patients had a flail mitral valve and one had flail mitral and tricuspid valves. The characteristic abnormality was a rapid systolic motion of the involved leaflet beyond the line of valve closure into the atrium. The maximal abnormal systolic motion was greatest at the tip of the leaflet with a loss of the normal coaptation point. By contrast, the two-dimensional echocardiographic feature of mitral valve prolapse is an abnormal systolic motion that is maximal in the

A woman suffering from TCGV associated with steno-insufficiency with a prolapse of left atrioventricular valve (tricuspid) and an insufficiency with a prolapse of right atrioventricular valve (mitral) presented a systolic honk which was to be registered in all the precordial area. The increase of this noise at the end of inspiration and after amyl nitrite, in the absence of any relevant change as to the prolapse of both atrioventricular valves, demonstrated that the honk originated from the right atrioventricular valve more than from the left one.
