A leukomyeloencephalopathy of unknown origin in an Azawakh dog.

A diffuse bilaterally symmetrical leukomyeloencephalopathy was observed in a 6-year-old male Azawakh dog showing a slowly progressive ataxia of six months duration associated with sensory disorders. Severe bilaterally symmetrical demyelination and vacuolisation were confined to the dorsal columns along the entire spinal cord with a minor axonal degeneration. The main changes of myelin sheaths consisted in splitting and intramyelin vacuolization. Naked axons were scattered in a network of astrocytic processes and collagen fibres. Few reactive macrophages exhibiting a foamy pattern were observed

The human rhombencephalon at the end of the embryonic period proper.

The human rhombencephalon at 8 postovulatory weeks (stage 23) is described and illustrated for the first time with the aid of silver-impregnated sections and graphic reconstructions. The motor and sensory trigeminal nuclei were among those studied, and the latter was found to be almost contiguous to the dentate nucleus. Fibers to the principal sensory nucleus join the mesencephalic trigeminal tract, which also seems to be connected with the motor fibers. Fine fibers from the sensory root join the tractus solitarius, which appears to receive connections from the facial, glossopharyngeal, and va

Post-apopletic trigeminal trophic syndrome.

Trigeminal trophic syndrome is an uncommon clinical entity in which cutaneous trophic ulceration develops with continuous manipulation of trigeminal dermatomes. Patients spontaneously refer picking, rubbing and/or scratching at the affected areas because of hypo-anaesthesia, paraesthesia and/or pain following damage of the sensory trigeminal fibres or nuclei. We herein describe a patient who developed the syndrome as a sequela of brain stem infarction. Diagnosis by scrape cytology in ruling-out basal cell carcinoma and other ulcerative skin diseases is discussed and the importance of neurologi

Origin and organization of brainstem catecholamine innervation in the rat.

The catecholamine (CA) innervation of the rat brainstem was studied by biochemical analysis of discrete nuclei or areas and by glyoxylic acid-formaldehyde freeze dry fluorescence histochemistry. CA assays demonstrate that the highest norepinephrine (NE) content in brainstem is present in the trigeminal motor nucleus, nucleus tractus solitarius, dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and nucleus raphe dorsalis. Bilateral locus coeruleus (LC) lesions do not significantly alter NE content in these nuclei but do decrease NE content in the superior and inferior colliculi, medial geniculate body, interpe

Neisseria meningitidis Induces Pathology-Associated Cellular and Molecular Changes in Trigeminal Schwann Cells.

Neisseria meningitidis, a common cause of sepsis and bacterial meningitis, infects the meninges and central nervous system (CNS), primarily via paracellular traversal across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) or blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier. N. meningitidis is often present asymptomatically in the nasopharynx, and the nerves extending between the nasal cavity and the brain constitute an alternative route by which the meningococci may reach the CNS. To date, the cellular mechanisms involved in nerve infection are not fully understood. Peripheral nerve glial cells are phagocytic and are capable

Androgen receptors in cranial nerve motor nuclei of male and female rats.

This study compared AR proteins in four cranial nerve motor nuclei among male and female rats that were intact, gonadectomized, or gonadectomized and given TP by immunohistochemistry. AR-immunoreactive (ir) neurons were found, in descending order of abundance, in the nucleus ambiguus, hypoglossal nucleus, and the facial and trigeminal motor nuclei of both males and females of intact and gonadectomized plus TP rats. Virtually every neuron of the nucleus ambiguus was AR-ir. In contrast, AR-ir neurons were either restricted to a specific area of the hypoglossal nucleus, or randomly distributed in

Development of order in the rat trigeminal system.

The trigeminal system of the rat is characterized by a high degree of order. The pattern of the distribution of vibrissae follicles on the face is replicated at each synaptic station between face and somatosensory cortex (Belford and Killackey, '80). The present study details the development of the trigeminal nerve, its intrinsic organization, and its relationship with its peripheral and central targets. We have observed that at early embryonic ages (E12 and E13) the trigeminal ganglion neurons grow out in straight lines without crossing, and the distance between these neurons and their periph

Radiological studies in trigeminal nerve pathology.

The authors have used CT scans and MRI to study pathology in anatomical and radiological correlations of brain slices. The CT scan was particularly useful for studying structures at the skull base, although at the level of the posterior fossa such scans could visualize only those tumors that were larger than 8 mm. even after injection. The CT scan was found to be the most useful examination before surgery for facial neuralgia. In contrast MRI gave a precise cisternal course of the trigeminal nerve and its relations with vascular structures.

Insights into the pharmacological targeting of the trigeminocervical complex in the context of treatments of migraine.

Migraine is one of the most severe and debilitating brain disorders. Most scientists accept that it involves activation and sensitization of the trigeminovascular system, which includes the sensory peripheral projections to the pain-producing dura mater, and a central projection to the trigeminal nucleus caudalis and its cervical extension, the trigeminocervical complex (TCC). The development of the anti-migraine therapeutics, triptans-5-HT1B/1D receptor agonists, had originally targeted the craniovasculature to exert therapeutic effects, and this locus of action seemed to predict efficacy in

Do GABA uptake inhibitors herald a new generation of GABA-ergic drugs for trigeminal neuralgia?

Anticonvulsant drugs are the initial treatment of choice in trigeminal neuralgia. Historically, carbamazepine is and remains the gold standard. Many similarities between the pathophysiologic phenomena observed in epilepsy models and neuropathic pain models justify the rationale for the use of anticonvulsants in the management of neuropathic pain disorders. We have evidence that there is a high intensity of Gamma-aminobutyric acid transporters in the trigeminal sensory nuclei, and that Gamma-aminobutyric transporters expression was increased in the spinal trigeminal nucleus of rats after facial

The efferent system of cranial nerve nuclei: a comparative neuromorphological study.

A number of inconsistencies and controversies are inherent in the classification of cranial nerve nuclei based on the concepts of the various head-theories. The assumption of head segmentation, which is common to these theories, serves as the basis for designating the dorsomedial nuclei as the somatomotor column, although they innervate striated muscles of a viscus and a specific sense organ. The ventrolateral nuclei are called the specific visceromotor column; they innervate striated muscles in the branchiogenous area, but many of these muscles insert on skeletal elements. A series of compara

Tegmental pontine hemorrhage with pure trigeminal motor impairment.

We report a patient with a right dorsolateral pontine syndrome including right masticatory weakness without facial hypesthesia. Brain computed tomography showed a right dorsolateral pontine hemorrhage. Blink reflex study indicated preservation of spinal tracts and sensory nuclei of the trigeminal nerve. Right masseter electromyography revealed denervation. This patient provides a good correlation between clinical, radiological and electrophysiological findings and nuclear organisation of the trigeminal nerve.

Physiological mechanisms of neuropathic pain: the orofacial region.

Neuropathic pain in the orofacial region is the clinical manifestation of trigeminal nerve injury following oral surgeries such as tooth extraction, dental implantation or tooth pulp treatment. Normally non-noxious touching of the facial skin or oral mucosa elicits strong pain named allodynia, and normally noxious stimulation causes intolerable pain named hyperalgesia in the trigeminal neuropathic pain patients. Although the mechanisms underlying trigeminal neuropathic pain have been studied by many researchers, the detailed mechanisms are still unknown. In this chapter, we are focusing on tri

Microvascular decompression versus percutaneous procedures for typical trigeminal neuralgia: personal experience.

This study includes 127 patients treated for typical trigeminal neuralgia, 74 of whom underwent a percutaneous microcompression (PMC), 33 a radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) and 20 were explored for microvascular decompression (MVD). A mean follow-up of 24 months was reached by all the groups. Pain relief was evaluated as an 'all or none' effect. At hospital discharge, pain had disappeared in 93.2% of the patients treated with PMC, in 81.8% of those treated with RFT, and in 85% of the MVD group. At 24 months the effect was maintained by 57.2% of the PMC group, 57.6% of the RFT, and by 75%

[The distribution of NADPH-diaphorase and neuronal no synthase in rat medulla oblongata nuclei].

The distribution of nitroxide ergic neurons in the medulla oblongata nuclei in Wistar rats (n = 8) was studied histochemically (NADPH-diaphorase) and using immunohistochemistry with an antiserum against neuronal form of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). NADPH-diaphorase activity was found in large and small neurons of the sensory, autonomic and motor nuclei. The latter were especially rich in the cells demonstrating the activity of the enzyme. Unlike NADPH-diaphorase, nNOS in the corresponding nuclei was always detected in the fewer number of neurons, predominantly of small sizes. The sensory nucl

[Trigeminotrophic ulceration of the ala nasi in Wallenberg syndrome].

A patient developed a trophic ulceration of the nose after an acute bulbar ischemia with infarction of the right trigeminal nuclei. Neurologic examination showed symptoms of a Wallenberg syndrome including ipsilateral hyp- and paresthesia of the second trigeminal branch and disturbed sensibility and temperature sense on the contralateral half of the body. The right ala nasi showed the characteristic sickle-shaped defect (ulcération en arc). The differential diagnosis and therapeutic approaches are discussed.

Bulbar encephalitis complicating trigeminal zoster in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

A 30-year-old homosexual man with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome and a recent history of zoster involving the mandibular division of the right trigeminal nerve was found at autopsy to have a predominantly demyelinating lesion restricted to the ipsilateral spinal trigeminal tract and nucleus. Cowdry A inclusions were readily apparent in the nuclei of numerous glia and isolated neurons, and inclusion-bearing cells were immunoreactive with an antiserum to the varicella zoster virus (VZV). This represents the first demonstration that zoster-associated trigeminal encephalitis is the result

Utility and Prognostic Value of Intraoperative Blink Reflex in Trigeminal or Facial Nerve Monitoring in Skull Base Surgeries: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Blink reflex (BR) is an oligosynaptic reflex that involves the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve (TN), ipsilateral main sensory and trigeminospinal nuclei, bilateral facial nuclei, and the facial nerves (FNs). Theoretically, as BR tests the function of both TN and FNs simultaneously, it is an ideal tool for monitoring the status of TN and FNs during skull base surgeries. Nevertheless, it has been used only recently in surgeries as the use of anesthesia limits its use. METHODS: For this systematic review, 2 authors input the search terms [(Blink Reflex) AND (Intraoperative

c-Fos induction in the brainstem following electrical stimulation of the trigeminal ganglion of chronically mandibular nerve-transected rats.

Neuronal excitability in the trigeminal sensory nuclei (TSN) changes after nerve transection. We examined the effects of chronic transection of the trigeminal nerve on the c-Fos-immunoreactivity in the TSN induced 2 h after 10 min of electrical stimulation of the trigeminal ganglion (TG) at C-fiber activating condition (1.0 mA, 5 ms, 5 Hz) in urethane-anesthetized rats. In the non-transected control rats, stimulation of the TG induced c-Fos-immunoreactive cells (c-Fos-IR cells) mostly in superficial layers (VcI/II) of the nucleus caudalis (Vc) in its full extent along the dorsomedial-ventrolat

Corneal afferents differentially target thalamic- and parabrachial-projecting neurons in spinal trigeminal nucleus caudalis.

Dorsal horn neurons send ascending projections to both thalamic nuclei and parabrachial nuclei; these pathways are thought to be critical pathways for central processing of nociceptive information. Afferents from the corneal surface of the eye mediate nociception from this tissue which is susceptible to clinically important pain syndromes. This study examined corneal afferents to the trigeminal dorsal horn and compared inputs to thalamic- and parabrachial-projecting neurons. We used anterograde tracing with cholera toxin B subunit to identify corneal afferent projections to trigeminal dorsal h
