Relationship between Blood Trihalomethane Concentrations and Serum Thyroid Function Measures in U.S. Adults.

Toxicological studies show that exposure to disinfection byproducts, including trihalomethanes (THMs), negatively affects thyroid function; however, few epidemiological studies have explored this link. This study included 2233 adults (ages ≥20 years) from the 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) who were measured for blood THM concentrations [chloroform (TCM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), or bromoform (TBM)] and serum thyroid function biomarkers [thyroid-stimulating hormone, free thyroxine (FT4), total thyroxine (TT4), free triiodothy

Effects of pH on the speciation coefficients in models of bromide influence on the formation of trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids.

This study investigated effects of pH, bromide and natural organic matter (NOM) level on yields and speciation of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) in chlorinated water. Experimental data were obtained using two water sources, one with a medium (DOC = 1.4 mg/L and SUVA = 2.60 L mg(-1) m(-1)) and the other with higher (DOC = 7.7 mg/L and SUVA = 4.26 L mg(-1) m(-1)) organic carbon level. The experiments employed the simulated distribution system (SDS) procedure at varying bromide concentrations and pH values of 7.0, 8.5 and 10. The speciation of THMs and dihalogenated HAAs (DHAA

Drinking water and pregnancy outcome in central North Carolina: source, amount, and trihalomethane levels.

In spite of the recognition of potentially toxic chemicals in chlorinated drinking water, few studies have evaluated reproductive health consequences of such exposure. Using data from a case-control study of miscarriage, preterm delivery, and low birth weight in central North Carolina, we evaluated risk associated with water source, amount, and trihalomethane (THM) concentration. Water source was not related to any of those pregnancy outcomes, but an increasing amount of ingested water was associated with decreased risks of all three outcomes (odds ratios around 1.5 for 0 glasses per day relat

Blood Trihalomethane Concentrations and Blood Pressure during and after Pregnancy: A Cohort Study in China.

Trihalomethanes (THMs), the leading species of disinfection byproducts in chlorinated tap water, have demonstrated cardiovascular toxicity. However, the association between THM exposure and blood pressure (BP) among pregnant women remains unclear. This study included 1456 women from a Chinese prospective birth cohort. We determined blood THM concentrations [chloroform (TCM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform (TBM)] across pregnancy trimesters (n = 3642) and repeatedly measured BP throughout pregnancy (n = 5816) and during postpartum (n = 1062). Blood Trihalomethane Concentrations and Osteoarthritis among U.S. Population Aged over 50 Years.

Exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs) has been associated with inflammation and oxidative stress, which are implicated in osteoarthritis. However, the association of THM exposure with osteoarthritis is unknown. Therefore, we pooled seven independent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycles (1999-2012) among participants aged over 50 years who had quantified blood concentrations of chloroform (TCM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform (TBM). Among 4,077 adults aged over 50 years, 781 (21.3%) reported osteoarthritis. Logistic regression models show

Formation and estimated toxicity of trihalomethanes, haloacetonitriles, and haloacetamides from the chlor(am)ination of acetaminophen.

The occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in natural waters, which act as drinking water sources, raises concerns. Moreover, those compounds incompletely removed by treatment have the chance to form toxic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during subsequent disinfection. In this study, acetaminophen (Apap), commonly used to treat pain and fever, was selected as a model PPCP. The formation of carbonaceous and nitrogenous DBPs, namely trihalomethanes, haloacetonitriles, and haloacetamides, during chlor(am)ination of Apap was investigated. Yields of chloroform (CF), dichlor

Modeling of trihalomethanes (THMs) in drinking water supplies: a case study of eastern part of India.

This study aimed at developing a model for predicting the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) in drinking water supplies. Monitoring of THMs in five major water treatment plants situated in the Eastern part of India revealed high concentration of THMs (231-484 μg l(-1)). Chloroform was predominant, contributing 87-98.9% to total THMs. Seasonal variation in THMs levels dictated that the concentration were higher in autumn than other seasons. Linear regression analysis of data indicated that TOC is the major organic precursors for THMs formation followed by DOC and UV254. Linear and non-linear p

Trihalomethane formation potential of aquatic and terrestrial fulvic and humic acids: Sorption on activated carbon.

Humic substances (HSs) are precursors for the formation of hazardous disinfection by-products (DBPs) during chlorination of water. Various surrogate parameters have been used to investigate the generation of DBPs by HS precursors and the removal of these precursors by activated carbon treatment. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC)- and ultraviolet absorbance (UVA254)-based isotherms are commonly reported and presumed to be good predictors of the trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP). However, THMFP-based isotherms are rarely published such that the three types of parameters have not been compa

Evaluation of exposure to trihalomethanes in tap water and semen quality: a prospective study in Wuhan, China.

Trihalomethanes (THMs) have been demonstrated to adversely affect male reproductive health in animals, but the evidence in humans is limited. The study aimed to examine the association between THM exposure and semen quality in a Chinese population. We recruited 324 men from the same water supply district in Wuhan, China between April 2011 and May 2012. Exposure to THMs was evaluated based on their concentrations in tap water measured within 90 days preceding semen collection, the uptake factors of THMs and personal information on ingestion and showering/bathing. We found that TTHM [sum of chlo

[Determination of four trihalomethanes in ship ballast water by gas chromatography-negative chemical ionization-mass spectrometry].

Ship ballast water can control the roll, trim, and draft of the ship, and thus ensuring the balance and stability of the ship in the course of sailing, and playing a vital role in the safe navigation of ships. The annual discharge of ship ballast water is very large in China. About three to five billion cubic meters of ship ballast water is discharged into offshore or inland waters every year. This water contains plankton, pathogens, and their larvae or spores. If not be handled appropriately, this will have a serious impact on the ecological environment of the discharge waters. Ballast water

Modeling the formation of trihalomethanes in rural and semi-urban drinking water distribution networks of Costa Rica.

Chlorination is one of the most important stages in the treatment of drinking water due to its effectiveness in the inactivation of pathogenic organisms. However, the reaction between chlorine and natural organic matter (NOM) generates harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs), such as trihalomethanes (THMs). In this research, drinking water quality data was collected from the distribution networks of 19 rural and semi-urban systems that use water sources as springs, surfaces, and a mixture of both, in three provinces of Costa Rica from April 2018 to September 2019. Twelve models were developed

First-trimester blood concentrations of drinking water trihalomethanes and neonatal neurobehavioral development in a Chinese birth cohort.

Toxicological evidence indicates that exposure to drinking water trihalomethanes (THMs) can impair neural development. However, no epidemiologic study to date has evaluated the relation of trihalomethanes exposure with neonatal neurobehavioral development. Here we aimed to evaluate if prenatal exposure to THMs during early pregnancy is associated with neonatal neurobehavioral development in 451 Chinese mother-child pairs. First trimester blood THMs [chloroform (TCM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform (TBM)] were determined by solid phase micro-extraction g

Occupational Exposure to Trichloramine and Trihalomethanes in Swedish Indoor Swimming Pools: Evaluation of Personal and Stationary Monitoring.

INTRODUCTION: Chlorination is a method commonly used to keep indoor swimming pool water free from pathogens. However, chlorination of swimming pools produces several potentially hazardous by-products as the chlorine reacts with nitrogen containing organic matter. Up till now, exposure assessments in indoor swimming pools have relied on stationary measurements at the poolside, used as a proxy for personal exposure. However, measurements at fixed locations are known to differ from personal exposure. METHODS: Eight public swimming pool facilities in four Swedish cities were included in this surv

Using physiologically based pharmacokinetic models to estimate the health risk of mixtures of trihalomethanes from reclaimed water.

To estimate the health risk of mixture of trihalomethanes (THMs) from reclaimed water during toilet flushing, the interaction-based Hazard Index (HI(interaction-based)) and the mixture carcinogenic risk (CRM) according to tissue dose were conducted through the integrated use of both the exposure concentrations model and the physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of THMs. Monte Carlo simulations were employed to implement the probabilistic risk analysis and sensitivity analysis. Nine samples were analyzed, which were collected from J Water Reclamation Plant (JWRP) in Tianjin of Chin

Parallel factor analysis of fluorescence excitation emissions to identify seasonal and watershed differences in trihalomethane precursors.

Concentration and chemical composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) play a major role in formation and speciation of disinfection by-products, such as trihalomethanes (THMs), in water treatment plants (WTPs) during disinfection. This study characterized DOM across the process trains of WTPs using fluorescence excitation emission matrices (EEMs) together with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). The PARAFAC model was developed from 216 EEMs of bimonthly water samples from three WTPs in Khon Kaen, Thailand, from May 2018 to Mar 2019. Three PARAFAC components identified were humic-like DOM of

Trihalomethane yields from twelve aromatic halogenated disinfection byproducts during chlor(am)ination.

As the first identified category of disinfection byproducts (DBPs), trihalomethanes (THMs) have received continuous attention. Previous studies have demonstrated that the transformation of aromatic halogenated DBPs during chlor (am)ination resulted in the formation of THMs, which may occur in both water treatment plants and drinking water distribution systems. In this study, THM yields from aromatic chlorinated/brominated DBPs during chlorination and aromatic iodinated DBPs during chloramination were investigated. The trichloromethane (TCM) yields from 3,5-dichloro-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 3,5-d
