This study aimed to evaluate the effects of incubator microclimate, broiler breeder age, and fertile egg storage duration on egg water loss in a commercial hatchery within a tropical climate. Data were collected from the environments (air-conditioned egg room and incubator) in order to perform microclimatic assessments, in which temperature (T; °C), relative humidity (RH; %) and specific enthalpy (h; kJ.kg of dry air- 1) were recorded at 10-minute intervals. Twelve Logen microprocessors were used in the egg room and one microprocessor was assigned for every three treatments in the incubators.

The Amazon Basin is undergoing rapid climatic and environmental changes, with direct impacts on infectious disease transmission and public health. Rising temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, and more frequent extreme events are reshaping vector and pathogen dynamics. Additionally, deforestation and land-use change increase human and animal exposure. These combined factors intensify the risk of disease transmission in the region. This narrative review synthesizes evidence generated by researchers from a reference center in tropical medicine in the Amazon, integrating epidemiological analyse

BACKGROUND: During exercise, dogs may experience heat stress and metabolic disorders, which can lead to physical health problems and impair their ability to work optimally. Furthermore, working at high ambient temperatures could result in blood chemistry parameter changes that differ from those at low ambient temperatures. It may even result in metabolic disorders in dogs. The biological responses of Belgian Malinois dogs to training in tropical areas with high temperatures and humidity, such as those found in Indonesia, have not been reported.
AIM: This study aimed to investigate the biologi

Coral reefs play a critical role in the socio-economic development of oceanic islands, besides offering coastal protection against the destructive forces of the sea under storm conditions. A Multi-Criteria Decision Making-based geospatial model is used which combine highly influential climatic, ecological, and anthropogenic reef degradation factors in view of revealing regions of high coral reef vulnerabilities to inform ecosystems conservation and management. Further investigation of the coastal seawater temperature trend revealed a rise in sea surface temperature approximating 0.66 °C over t

Ciguatera toxin causes a range of gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and neurological symptoms that occur within 1-6 h of ingesting fish with the toxin and can last for days, months or years. It is a well-recognized problem in the tropics. Avon Health Protection Team investigated food poisoning on a ship at Avonmouth, which was thought by the crew to be related to a white snapper fish from the Caribbean. The symptoms were initially thought to be scombroid fish poisoning but were consistent with ciguatera fish poisoning. Cases of fish poisoning from fish imported from the Caribbean and Pacific or

This article describes an urban microclimate dataset collected on Reunion Island, a hot and humid tropical island in the southwest Indian Ocean, between October 2024 and June 2025. Measurements were acquired from two neighborhood-scale monitoring networks installed in Saint-Denis (north coast) and Le Port (west coast), representing contrasting urban morphologies and local climatic contexts. The monitoring system was based on several LoRa communication networks connecting 25 low-cost weather stations developed by the authors and deployed on residential buildings. More than ten stations were ins

The aim was to investigate thermal response, hydration behaviour and performance in flatwater kayaking races in tropical conditions (35.9 ± 2.8°C and 64 ± 4% RH). Eight regionally ranked paddlers (ARP) participated in the 2012 Surfski Ocean Racing World Cup in Guadeloupe (an inline 15-km downwind race). Core temperature (Tc) and heart rate (HR) were measured using portable telemetry units, while water intake was deduced from backpack absorption. The kayakers were asked to rate both their comfort sensation and thermal sensation on a scale before and after the race. The performance was not relat

Respiratory diseases remain a major public health challenge in tropical coastal cities, where persistent heat-humidity interactions and climate variability shape population vulnerability. This study quantified associations between atmospheric conditions and respiratory hospitalizations in Maceió, Brazil, using a 20-years time series (2000-2019). Weekly hospitalization rates stratified by age (children 0-4 years, adults 5-59 years, elderly ≥ 60 years), were modeled against meteorological variables-including temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, atmospheric pressure, and solar radiation

In the agriculture sector, livestock are considered extremely resilient to climate change and are tipped to play a significant role in ensuring food security to meet the increased demands of growing human population by 2050. Compared to other domestic species, goats are considered the ideal animal model for climate change due to its high thermal and drought resilience, ability to survive on limited pastures, and high disease resistance. This review is therefore a revisit to the advantages of rearing goats over other livestock species under current and future trends of changes in climate, parti

Somatic cell count (SCC) is a widely used indicator of udder health and milk quality in dairy cattle; however, its spatio-temporal dynamics under tropical production conditions remain poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize spatio-temporal patterns of herd-level SCC and to evaluate associations between climatic conditions and SCC variation in Northern Thailand. An observational longitudinal study was conducted using 5,045 monthly herd-level observations from 102 dairy farms in Chiang Mai between January 2022 and August 2025. SCC was log10-transformed and analyzed as the primary out

The current global climate has shown a significant change, mostly resulting from human-induced activities. Frequent experiences of extreme rainstorms, deadly landslides, and floods followed by the destruction of roads, bridges, drainage, buildings, agriculture, and other infrastructures have been appearing across the globe along with extensive socio-economic effects including human lives losses whereby tropical Africa is among the greatly affected regions. Several studies in the region acclaim the increase of climate-related extremes due to a gradual climate variation. Hence, this study aimed

The aim of this review was to present the breeding status of pure or crossbreeds of European cattle with African indigenous cattle in order to improve milk yield in African tropical conditions. As the African indigenous breeds are characterized by small size, low body weight (300-450 kg) and low production performances (less than 1000 kg per lactation), short lactation length (205-240 days), etc., the crossbreeding with pure European cattle was done in order to ameliorate production performances especially milk and beef production. As results, it was seen that F1 offspring improved output prod

The recent expansion of Aedes albopictus across continents in both tropical and temperate regions and the exponential growth of dengue cases over the past 50 years represent a significant risk to human health. Although climate change is not the only factor responsible for the increase and spread of dengue cases worldwide, it might increase the risk of disease transmission at global and regional scale. Here we show that regional and local variations in climate can induce differential impacts on the abundance of Ae. albopictus. We use the instructive example of Réunion Island with its varied cli

Research on phenological responses to climate change has primarily focused on temperate regions, while tropical species remain critically understudied due to a historical scarcity of long-term monitoring data in these areas. We utilized digitized herbarium specimens and photographs to analyze century-long shifts (1921-2020) in the flowering phenology of 56 native plant species on Hainan Island, China. Species-specific linear models were used to quantify phenological responses of flowering day of year (DOY) to temperature and precipitation, and linear mixed-effects models were applied to test w

Extreme climate conditions increasingly threaten worldwide coastal biodiversity. We applied a trait-based approach to quantify the tolerance thresholds of 13 mollusk species from five tropical coastal habitats, using controlled experiments that simulate extreme temperature, salinity, submersion, and desiccation stress. Survival was analyzed in relation to functional traits, including isolation from ambient conditions (presence/absence of shell closure and/or operculum), respiration mode (branchial or pulmonate), shell thickness, and habitat type. Thermal safety margins (TSMs) were also project

Neurotoxin domoic acid (DA) poses threats to marine ecosystems and human health, yet its true levels and dynamics remain poorly understood in tropical seawaters. This study first revealed the methodological bias of the conventional sampling method using a phytoplankton net (20 μm) in previous phytotoxin assessments, which underestimated particulate DA (pDA) by approximately 90% due to cell loss while artificially elevating dissolved DA (dDA) due to cell rupture. Subsequently, we conducted a year-long monthly survey using in situ seawater in the Chinese tropical Daya Bay. The results revealed w

The Caribbean region is prone to the strong winds and low air pressures of tropical cyclones and their corresponding storm surge that driving coastal flooding. To protect coastal communities from the impacts of tropical cyclones, it is important to understand how this impact of tropical cyclones might change towards the future. This study applies the storyline approach to show what tropical cyclones Maria (2017) and Dorian (2019) could look like in a 2 °C and 3.4 °C warmer future climate. These two possible future climates are simulated with a high-resolution regional climate model using the p

This study evaluated the capacity of thermoregulation and its consequences on the scrotal surface temperature patterns and semen quality of buffalo bulls raised in a wet tropical climate. Eleven water buffaloes were evaluated in the rainiest, in the transitional and in the less rainy season. Air temperature and humidity were consistently high, but the animals did not show thermal stress in any season. The scrotal temperature gradient of buffalo bulls using infrared thermography was described, and three parallel and decreasing thermal bands were characterised. Sperm quality (n = 176 ejaculates)

Heat stress is major welfare concern during transport of pigs in tropical climates, which can also lead to direct production costs. This study evaluated the dynamics of heat zones through the load and their relationship with heat stress of weaner pigs during road transport in a tropical climate. Both environmental (e.g. temperature and relative humidity) and physiological (e.g. respiratory frequency and lactate) measures were recorded from four vehicle journeys (70 km distance, 216 weaner pigs within each trailer load) within Ceará, northeastern Brazil. Geostatistics and fluid dynamics simulat

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I), the first human retrovirus to be isolated, is the cause of endemic tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP). Originally, this chronic neurological disorder was described as a disease seen among blacks of low socioeconomic status living in tropical countries, and thus for many decades TSP remained a little known curiosity outside the endemic regions. The link between HTLV-I infection and TSP was made fortuitously, when antibodies to HTLV-I were found in serum and cerebrospinal fluid of TSP patients in Jamaica, Colombia, and Martinique. Soon thereafter
