Long-haul truck drivers are significantly affected by musculoskeletal injuries with incidence rates 3.5 times higher than the national average. Yet, little is known about injuries that affect long-haul trucks drivers. In 2010, interviewers collected data from 1,265 long-haul truck drivers at 32 truck stops across the United States. These surveys were analyzed to describe all self-reported musculoskeletal injuries. Injuries to the arm (26.3%) and back (21.1%) were the two areas most reported in the survey. Musculoskeletal injuries were most often caused by falls (38.9%) and contact with an obje

UNLABELLED: We studied dietary patterns, physical activity (PA), and monthly goal setting in a weight reduction intervention in long-distance professional drivers. The study was conducted in Finland in 2009-2012. Male drivers with waist circumference > 100 cm were randomized to a lifestyle counseling (LIFE, N = 55) and a reference (REF, N = 58) group. During 12 months, LIFE participated in 6 face-to-face and 7 telephone counseling sessions on diet and PA. Dietary patterns were assessed using an index combining food diary and counselor interview, and PA with the number of daily steps using a pe

A previous study conducted in 1995 showed that psychoactive drug use by workers was higher in safety/security workstations than in the rest of the labour force. In order to verify this finding, we conducted a new study in 2003-2004 in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, restricted to truck drivers. The aim of this study was to allow harmonizing the professional practice of the occupational physicians, proposing drug prevention and drug testing policies, validating the analytical methods and the guidelines in case of positive testing results. One thousand truck drivers were studied. Urines were test

Recent studies do not agree on the possible relationship between medical conditions and traffic safety; most of them do not control for exposure factors. This problem has become more pertinent for scientific studies because of litigation that showed that present regulations about access to driver permits might contravene human rights legislation. In our study, we estimate the effect of different medical conditions on truck drivers' distributions of accidents. Our data and our models permit simultaneous control for age; medical conditions; exposure factors measured by hours, kilometer, and qual

BACKGROUND: Long-haul truck drivers (LHTDs) suffer from long work hours often resulting in fatigue. Although several studies have reported that fatigue can contribute to crashes, no study has identified the location and patterns of fatigue-related crashes and solicited truck driver feedback on potential mitigation strategies. The purpose of this study is 1) to map the location of fatigue-related crashes and 2) examine the perceptions of truck drivers concerning fatigue-related crashes.
METHODS: Using databases from the Saskatchewan Government Insurance, information on LHTD demographics, crash

The available information indicates that up to one third of the road traffic accidents are produced by the driver's sleepiness. Sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) is an organic disease that causes sleepiness. It can be diagnosed by a sleep register and can be controlled by different therapeutic means, varying their complexity according to its severity, which determines the final cost of the management of SAHS. In patients using the therapy thoroughly, the results are very good and achieve to control the sleepiness, improve the quality of life of the affected subject, protect his health and m

Reduced alertness is common during night driving. Light treatment may constitute one countermeasure to reduce sleepiness. To test this idea six professional drivers participated in this study in which they self-administered a 30-min. light treatment during a break in the middle of a night drive of about 9 hours. Two experimental conditions were used, including light exposures with a light box and a light visor. There was a control condition. Alertness was measured on a 100-mm visual analogue scale. No significant effect of light was found, but ratings of sleepiness increased significantly thro

The automated truck platoon is one of the most promising connected autonomous vehicle technologies and is expected to become mainstream in the future. It is foreseeable that automated truck platoons and human drivers will share the roads and interact regularly. As a new traffic element, the truck platoon may influence other drivers' behaviors and mental states, potentially compromising the safety of mixed traffic. While existing studies have extensively explored drivers' behavioral responses to truck platoons, little is known about their psychophysiological states during such interactions, par

BACKGROUND: The Canadian trucking industry employs over 300,000 long-haul truck drivers (LHTD) and has the highest number of worker compensation claims of any industry in Canada. Although studies have shown associations between obesity, decreased workplace productivity, and cognitive impairment in the general population, there is limited information on these relationships among LHTD. This pilot study aimed to: (1) profile LHTD health, demographics, and clinical test scores; (2) examine associations between obesity and workplace productivity; and (3) explore connections between obesity and clin

Longue-distance trucks drivers are a population at increased risk of HIV infection compared with the general population. This study aimed to estimate the national prevalence of HIV and identify factors associated with infection among longue-distance trucks drivers in Mali. We conducted a cross-sectional bio-behavioral survey using Time-Location Sampling (TLS) between July 2019 and February 2020. Eligible participants were truck drivers aged ≥ 18 years who regularly undertook long-distance trips (at least 200 km one way). Following pre-test counseling, HIV testing was performed according to nat

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed the relationship between traffic accidents and drowsiness.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A self-answered questionnaire survey of 4331 commercial bus/truck drivers was done.
RESULT: Sixty-nine percent of the drivers reported accidents and one third of these accidents was attributable to drowsiness. Drowsy driving and microsleeps were experienced by 75% and 28% of drivers respectively. Forty-five percent of drivers had excessive daytime sleepiness based on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS score > or =11). This excessive daytime sleepiness was strongly associated with fe

Forward collision warning (FCW) systems have been widely used in trucks to alert drivers of potential road situations so they can reduce the risk of crashes. Research on FCW use shows, however, that there are differences in drivers' responses to FCW alerts under different scenarios. Existing FCW algorithms do not take differences in driver response behavior into account, with the consequence that the algorithms' minimum safe distance assessments that trigger the warnings are not always appropriate for every driver or situation. To reduce false alarms, this study analyzed truck driver behavior

Previous research has shown that night driving performance may be seriously affected by sleepiness. The present study compared daytime and night-time performance of professional drivers on a simulated truck driving task. A secondary purpose was whether a nap or a rest pause would affect performance. Nine professional drivers participated in a counterbalanced design. The conditions were day driving (DAYDRIVE), night driving (NIGHTDRIVE), night driving with a 30 minute rest (NIGHTREST), and night driving with a 30 minute nap (NIGHTNAP). Each condition consisted of three consecutive 30-min period

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) are recognized contributors to road traffic accidents (RTAs). However, the association between OSA, EDS, and RTAs remains underexplored among Nigerian truck drivers.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 306 adult male long-distance truck drivers in Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria. The Berlin Questionnaire was used to assess the risk of OSA while the Epworth Sleepiness Scale evaluated excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and self-reported previous RTAs were adapted in the questionnaire.
RESULTS: The mean age (
