INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal tuberculosis (LTB) is the most frequent larynx granulomatous disease. In general there is lung involvement, but in an important proportion of cases you can find LTB without pulmonary disease. The lesions observed in LTB, such as ulceration and fibrosis, can interfere in the process of voice production. The involvement of the mucous lining of the vocal folds can change their flexibility and, consequently, change voice quality, and the main symptom is dysphonia present in almost 90% of cases.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the anatomical characteristics and voice quality in LTB

Laryngeal tuberculosis (TB) was a common manifestation of TB in the early twentieth century, but now represents only 1% of all cases. Most modern case series of laryngeal TB originate outside the USA. We report a case of laryngeal TB from our institution and review other US cases published between 1970 and 2012. One hundred twenty-seven cases were identified. The mean patient age was 49 y and 28% were female. The mean duration of symptoms was 19 weeks. Dysphonia and weight loss were the most common manifestations, seen in 96% and 47% of cases, respectively. These symptoms were usually attribut

Tuberculosis of the larynx was quite common in the past and usually associated with advanced pulmonary cavitations with an overall mortality of approximately 70% before the advent of chemotherapy. Its incidence was on the decline in the last two decades; however, it seems to be on the increase in the last few years. During the past 30 years, 16 patients with laryngeal tuberculosis were investigated at the American University of Beirut, Medical Centre. Around 20% of our patients had isolated laryngeal tuberculosis with no apparent pulmonary involvement. Four patients (25%) presented with strido

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal tuberculosis is a rare and often misdiagnosed disease. Its diagnosis is based on the association of a laryngeal lesion and the microbiological detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Stool cultures have recently been described as a useful tool in the diagnosis of atypical forms of tuberculosis. In this report, we describe the first case in the literature of laryngeal tuberculosis diagnosed by culture of stool samples.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old French Caucasian man was admitted to our hospital for dysphonia of 3 months' evolution. A laryngeal biopsy was performe

The present study investigated the clinical characteristics and diagnosis of modern laryngeal tuberculosis (TB). A total of 61 patients that were pathologically diagnosed with laryngeal TB between 1998 and 2012 were retrospectively analyzed using laryngoscopy methods. The primary symptoms of laryngeal TB observed in the present study include hoarseness and sore throat, and in the majority of cases, laryngeal TB was not associated with pulmonary TB (ratio 41/61, 67.2%). Systemic symptoms included low-grade fever and night sweats, which were rarely observed (20/61, 32.8%). Laryngoscopy results w

Spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) to the larynx is exceedingly rare and can be obscured by more common conditions such as laryngeal cancer or oropharyngeal candidiasis, complicating an accurate diagnosis. Risk factors for chronic laryngeal disease, such as smoking and toxin exposure, place TB infection comparatively lower for consideration on a physician's differential. However, identifying these lesions is crucial from a medical and public health perspective to prevent community spread. We report the case of a 60-year-old male who presented with dysphonia, pharyngitis, aphasia, and s

Laryngeal tuberculosis (LT) is a rare disease. The therapy for LT is easy but the diagnosis remains a challenge for the pathologist and the laryngologist because of the absence of specific signs. The objective was to analyze the epidemiological and pathological profiles of LT cases in Dakar (Senegal) with a view to better understand this pathology. This study was a retrospective and descriptive of LT cases diagnosed in pathology laboratories in Senegal during five years (2011-2015). The LT was found in 9 cases. The mean age at diagnosis was 41.9 years (18/58) without sex predominance (sex-rati

Tuberculosis is the most frequent granulomatous disease but the involvement of the larynx is rare. Immunosuppressed patients have a higher risk of developing this clinical form due to primoinfection or reactivation of latent tuberculosis. It is common to confuse the diagnosis of laryngeal tuberculosis with laryngeal cancer because they have similar macroscopic lesions and both produce dysphonia of chronic evolution. We present the case of a pregnant woman with chronic dysphonia, dysphagia, and odynophagia, diagnosed initially with laryngeal cancer after the first laryngoscopy. However, the pat

A search for the source of infection for four children with tuberculosis (TB) identified a university student with cavitary and laryngeal TB. An investigation was conducted at the university, including tuberculin skin test (TST) screening and the use of questionnaires, chest radiographs, and DNA fingerprint analyses of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates. Six students with active TB were identified. All were linked to the source case. TSTs were positive for 22.4% of 419 students who had contact with the source case vs. 3.6% of 1,306 students without contact. The odds of a positive TST increase

Nasopharyngeal stenosis is a rare sequela of extra-laryngeal tuberculosis that can adversely impact the quality of life of afflicted patients. Relying solely on the oropharyngeal airway, patients often complain of inspiratory dryness and decreased sensation of airflow as the nasal mucosa and turbinate complex is entirely excluded from the breathing mechanism. Often times, the oropharyngeal inlet can be narrowed as well, limiting the air flow through the oropharyngeal airway. In those circumstances, patients often require tracheostomy for establishment of a reliable airway. We present the uniqu

Primary laryngeal tuberculosis is a rare disease with a wide variety of clinical manifestations. We report the case of an ear-nose and throat diabetic physician with primary laryngeal tuberculosis. The diagnosis of laryngeal cancer had been considered before in another institution, and at the patient's admission, he only presented dysphonia with a six-month evolution. The vocal cord histological examination showed granulomas, giant cells, fibrosis and necrosis, and the Ziehl-Neelsen staining showed acid-alcohol resistant bacilli. The culture from vocal cord tissue was positive for mycobacteria

OBJECTIVE: To describe the census and contact investigation in a case of laryngeal tuberculosis.
METHODS: Based on a patient with laryngeal tuberculosis and through interviews and ocular inspection, we established three circles of contacts. The tuberculin test was performed (positive ≥5 mm). Persons testing positive were invited to undergo a chest x-ray. The association of the infection was calculated with the odds ratio. The exposure-response relationship was determined with the linear trend χ2 test.
RESULTS: The overall prevalence of infection was 39.9% (67/168). The prevalence among cowor

Since the introduction of antituberculous medications, the incidence of laryngeal tuberculosis (LTB) has decreased. However, it is a fact the increasing number of cases of pulmonary or extrapulmonary TB mainly caused by the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. We report the clinical case of a 72 years old male with dysphonia secondary to LTB which masqueraded a carcinoma. It's certain diagnosis was the histopathologic exam of the biopsy obtained by microsurgery. There was a residual TB in lung after a complete study of Internal Medicine Department.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the likelihood of transmission of tuberculosis (TB) from a highly infectious passenger with pulmonary/laryngeal TB to other persons aboard two airline flights, each approximately 1.25 h in duration.
METHODS: The 146 passengers with known U.S. residence and 15 flight crew were contacted and referred to their personal health care provider or local health department for a Mantoux tuberculin skin test (TST). Each person was asked to complete a risk factor questionnaire and return this form with TST information provided by the health care provider.
RESULTS: Questionnai

Renal allograft recipients are at greater risk of developing tuberculosis than the general population. A woman with a kidney transplant was admitted to our emergency department with high temperature, dysphonia, odynophagia, and asthenia. The final diagnosis was laryngeal tuberculosis. Multidisciplinary collaboration enabled accurate diagnosis and successful treatment. Laryngeal tuberculosis should be considered in renal allograft recipients with hoarseness. A more rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis in renal transplant recipients is desirable when the site involved, such as the larynx, exhibits sp
