Gonadogenesis and slow proliferation of germ cells in juveniles of cultured yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares.

To develop techniques for seedling production of yellowfin tuna, the behavior of primordial germ cells (PGCs) and gonadogenesis were examined at 1-30 days post hatching (dph) using morphometric analysis, histological examination, and in situ hybridization. Immediately after hatching, PGCs were located on the dorsal side of the posterior end of the rectum under the peritoneum of the larvae, and at 3 dph they came into contact with stromal cells. PGCs and stromal cells gradually moved forward from the anus prior to 5 dph. At 7-10 dph, germ cells were surrounded by stromal cells and the gonadal p

Modification of tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) hydrolysates with galangal active ingredients: Enhancing flavor and functional properties.

Marine protein hydrolysates hold great promise for functional foods, but undesirable flavors often limit their application. This study aimed to enhance both the sensory and functional properties of tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) hydrolysates by introducing galangal (Alpinia officinarum) active ingredients. Eight preparation routes were designed to generate galangal-flavored peptide-rich bases (GPBs) with different addition strategies. GPBs contained flavonoids and polysaccharides derived from galangal, and exhibited stronger xanthine oxidase inhibitory (XOI) activity compared with tuna hydrolysates

Relationship between Southern Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus maccoyii, melanomacrophage centres and Cardicola spp. (Trematoda: Aporocotylidae) infection.

Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT), Thunnus maccoyii, is ranched off Port Lincoln, South Australia and is Australia's second largest economic finfish aquaculture industry. The biggest threats to SBT health identified by the industry are the blood flukes Cardicola forsteri and C. orientalis (Trematoda: Aporocotylidae). Melanomacrophage centres (MMCs) are aggregations of pigmented macrophage like cells present in spleen, kidney and liver of teleost fish. The aim of this study was to quantify MMCs in SBT anterior kidney, liver and spleen to investigate changes in relation to Cardicola spp. Infection. Sa

Cadmium, lead, tin, total mercury, and methylmercury in canned tuna commercialised in São Paulo, Brazil.

The objective of this work was to determine levels of inorganic contaminants in 30 samples of five commercial brands of canned tuna, acquired on the local market in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, in the year of 2015. Total mercury and methylmercury (MeHg+) were determined by atomic absorption with thermal decomposition and amalgamation; and cadmium, lead, and tin were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Results indicated that 20% of the tuna samples surpassed limits determined by the Brazilian and European Commission legislation for cadmium; for lead, the maxi

Euryphorus brachypterus (Copepoda: Caligidae) on wild pacific bluefin tuna from the Tsugaru Strait, northern Japan.

Parasitic copepods infecting large scombrid fishes have been known for a long time because their hosts are economically important. Most studies, however, have focused on their morphology or their infection status in aquaculture from pathological viewpoints, and very few quantitative surveys have been conducted under conditions in the wild. This study therefore investigated the prevalence of Euryphorus brachypterus (Caligidae) in wild Pacific bluefin tuna (PBF). Results of sampling from August to September 2014 at the western area of the Tsugaru Strait, Japan showed that 13.2% of the PBF indivi

The hypouricemic effect and mechanism of tuna (Thunnus albacares) peptide and screening its functional peptide segments.

This study aimed to examine the hypouricemic effect of tuna peptide (TP) and its potential mechanisms in hyperuricemia (HUA) mice. Additionally, functional TP segments were screened to identify the bioactive components. The results revealed that TP mitigated HUA by inhibiting serum and hepatic xanthine oxidase (XOD) activity and suppressing the expression of urate transporters, including renal glucose transporter 9 (GLUT9) and urate transporter 1 (URAT1) in the kidneys, and GLUT9 in the ileum. TP also significantly lowered the serum urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (CR) levels and alleviated

Evidence for sult1st6y as a Major Candidate Sex-Determining Gene in Pacific Bluefin Tuna.

INTRODUCTION: The Y chromosome-linked gene sult1st6y (a homolog of the estrogen sulfotransferase gene) has recently been identified in Thunnus, a genus characterized by an XX/XY sex determination system. This study examined whether sult1st6y is a sex-determining gene in bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis). METHODS: The expression of sult1st6y was examined using polymerase chain reaction analyses and in situ hybridization. Sult1st6y expression in masculinized XX testes produced by aromatase inhibitor administration and the expression profile of the sult1st6y mutant, which was produced using CRIS

Exploring mercury detoxification in fish: The role of selenium from tuna byproduct diets for sustainable aquaculture.

Exposure to mercury (Hg) through fish consumption poses significant environmental and public health risks, given its status as one of the top ten hazardous chemicals. Aquaculture is expanding, driving a surge in demand for sustainable aquafeeds. Tuna byproducts, which are rich in protein, offer potential for aquafeed production, yet their use is challenged by the high content of heavy metals, particularly Hg. However, these byproducts also contain elevated levels of selenium (Se), which may counteract Hg adverse effects. This study examines the fate of dietary Hg and Se in an aquaculture model

Thunniform swimming: muscle dynamics and mechanical power production of aerobic fibres in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares).

We studied the mechanical properties of deep red aerobic muscle of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), using both in vivo and in vitro methods. In fish swimming in a water tunnel at 1-3 L s(-1) (where L is fork length), muscle length changes were recorded by sonomicrometry, and activation timing was quantified by electromyography. In some fish a tendon buckle was also implanted on the caudal tendon to measure instantaneous muscle forces transmitted to the tail. Between measurement sites at 0.45 to 0.65 L, the wave of muscle shortening progressed along the body at a relatively high velocity of

Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) of the prostate using low-level radiofrequency energy: an animal experimental study.

Transurethral needle ablation of the canine prostate using low level radiofrequency energy was examined for efficacy and safety in a two-stage experimental study. Eleven mongrel dogs were treated via the bladder neck and prostatic urethra using a specially designed catheter through which needle antennas were advanced into the prostatic tissue. A radiofrequency energy source was connected to the catheter and used to create tissue ablation. In the first 5 dogs this was found to be feasible. Necrotic lesions were created around the needle antennas. Typically, lesions were 1 cm in diameter and con

Use of a counterfactual approach to evaluate the effect of area closures on fishing location in a tropical tuna fishery.

Spatial closures are widely used in marine conservation and fisheries management and it is important to understand their contribution to achieving management objectives. Many previous evaluations of closed area effects have used before-after comparisons, which, without controlling for a full range of factors, cannot ascribe changes in fleet behaviour to area closures per se. In this study we used a counterfactual approach to disentangle the effect of two closed areas on fishing location from other competing effects on the behaviour of the Indian Ocean tuna purse seine fishery. Our results reve

Global origins of tuna and billfish fisheries reveal the transition from coastal access to oceanic exploitation.

Ocean ecosystems have played a crucial role in people's lives around the world for millennia. However, questions persist about when, why, and how people first began removing biomass from offshore habitats and established fisheries in distant, oceanic environments. We explore the antiquity and evolution of tuna (Thunnini) and billfish (Istiophoridae/Xiphiidae) fisheries, two groups of fishes that occur around the world, are economically significant, and are ecologically important open ocean apex predators. The earliest archaeological evidence of fishing for tuna occurs ~44,000 years ago and bil

Optimization of rosemary extract-based immersion processing for improving color stability and quality of tuna flesh.

BACKGROUND: Tuna flesh is highly susceptible to oxidative quality deterioration during storage, resulting in discoloration and reduced consumer acceptance. This study aimed to evaluate antioxidant-rich natural extracts and optimize a rosemary extract-based immersion process to improve color stability and overall quality of tuna flesh. RESULTS: Among seven natural extracts evaluated, rosemary extract exhibited the highest antioxidant activity and total phenolic content and was therefore selected for process optimization. Single-factor experiments revealed non-linear effects of immersion soluti

Skipjack tuna peptides exert sleep-promoting effects by regulating neurotransmitter metabolism in pentobarbital sodium-induced mice.

It is estimated that sleep disorders affect approximately 35% of the global population, thus becoming the second most prevalent mental health disorder. In this work, the sleep-promoting effect of skipjack tuna peptide GHHAA (S4) was evaluated systematically in pentobarbital sodium (PS)-induced mice, and its mechanism was explored through measuring the content changes of sleep-related neurotransmitters and c-Fos expression levels in mouse brain regions. In comparison with the control group, S4 was able to dose-dependently reduce the sleep latency (6.33 ± 1.15 min) and prolong sleep time (60.33

Protecting valuable stock: Non-lethal sampling approaches for Cardicola spp. monitoring in ranched Southern bluefin tuna.

Reliance on lethal sampling to monitor Cardicola spp. infections in ranched Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii, SBT) constrains investigative time points and number of fish available for sampling, restricting health monitoring to commercial harvest periods. For these reasons six non-lethal sampling strategies from three biologically relevant sites in SBT were evaluated for their ability to detect Cardicola spp. infection severity relative to lethally collected gill necropsies, which are currently considered the diagnostic gold standard. From harvested SBT, gill biopsies demonstrated the h

Identification and quantification of flavor compounds in smoked tuna fish based on GC-Orbitrap volatolomics approach.

Cold smoking enhances the appeal of fish products, offering consumers a smooth texture and a delicate smoky flavor. This study aims to explore variations in the volatile profile from different exposure times during cold smoking processing (light, moderate, and full-cure) in tune samples. An innovative untargeted analytical approach, headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography and a hybrid quadrupole-orbitrap mass analyzer, was employed to identify 86 volatiles associated with the cold smoking process. Most of these compounds, including phenols, furan derivates, aldeh
