Angioleiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors that originate from the tunica media of veins and arteries. They can occur anywhere in the body, but the preferential location of these tumors is the lower extremities. We describe a rare case of rectal angioleiomyoma and present our findings obtained by using computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and histopathological analysis.

A 62-year-old man was found to have an asymptomatic ascending aortic aneurysm (6.6 cm) associated with severe aortic regurgitation. Operative resection of the wall of the aneurysm disclosed its cause to be multiple healed intimal-medial tears without dissection involving a previously normal aorta. The concept of an intimal-medial tear unassociated with aortic dissection is a poorly recognized entity and these tears appear to be asymptomatic and after the aortic tearing lead to aneurysmal formation.

There has been no definitive method, other than pathological findings, to identify the degeneration of the tunica media in the aortic wall (TM). We describe how high-resolution intraoperative epiaortic ultrasonographic imaging identifies changes in the TM of patients with aortic dissection. This method shows great promise in facilitating presymptomatic diagnoses of various aortic wall pathologies.

AIM: Cigarette smoking is a strong risk factor for atherosclerotic disease; however, it remains unclear whether the impact of other risk factors differs by smoking status. The aim of this study was to investigate this issue, especially with regard to low-density and high-density lipoprotein (LDL/HDL) levels.
METHODS: In total, 448 healthy, middle-aged men (aged 37 to 61) participated in this study. Smoking habits were recorded, carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) was measured by B-mode ultrasound, and serum lipids and other biochemical parameters were determined from fasted blood samples.

Aortic dissection is an infrequent but important cause of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), and must not be overlooked because of a possible worse outcome, especially with the use of an intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator. We report a case of left carotid artery dissection and AIS originating from localized aortic arch dissection, pathologically caused by cystic medial necrosis in the tunica media.

The sudden death of a Cebus apella female (> 19 years old) on an experimental hyperlipidic diet during three years is described. The gross lesions were hemothorax, atherosclerotic plaques in the aortic curve, and an aneurysm in the ascending aorta. Histologically, an enlargement of the intima in the ascending aorta with hyalinization and a thrombus were observed. The media was thinned and showed sclerosis and hemorrhage extending to the tunica adventicia.

An hydropic fetus seen at 28-weeks gestation had a saccular aortic aneurysm in the descending thoracic aorta. Histology disclosed marked fibrointimal hyperplasia, thrombus, and attenuation of the tunica media. The remainder of the descending thoracic aorta showed fibrointimal hyperplasia. We speculate that the narrowed lumen and rigid aortic wall resulting from this vasculopathy provided an increased afterload leading to cardiac failure.

Our results indicated that the pathological feature of MMD in tunica media occurs in both adult and pediatric patients. However, the MMD feature in tunica intima of MCA is more prominent in adult patients. Further analysis from MCA specimens and other researches are necessary to elucidate the pathophysiology of MMD.
