Radiofrequency inferior turbinate reduction improves smell ability of patients with chronic rhinitis and inferior turbinate hypertrophy.

Radiofrequency inferior turbinate reduction (RFITR) of inferior turbinate hypertrophy (ITH) is an effective way to treat patients with intractable nasal mucosal obstruction. The objective of this study was to assess smell ability, nasal symptoms, inferior turbinate grading (ITG), peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) of patients with chronic rhinitis (CR), and ITH before and after RFITR. Patients with CR and ITH, aged 18-60 years, who underwent RFITR, were prospectively recruited. Smell ability (measured by smell detection threshold [SDT]), visual analog scale (VAS) of nasal symptoms, ITG, and PN

A secondary middle turbinate co-existing with an accessory middle turbinate: an unusual combination of two anatomic variations.

The anatomy of the nasal cavity lateral wall is quite complex; this is where most anatomical anomalies occur. The secondary middle turbinate, a bony projection that arises from the lateral nasal wall, is a rare variation, differing from the accessory middle turbinate by its distinct developmental origin. We report on an unusual case involving a combination of these two turbinate variations. We believe that detailed knowledge of anatomical anomalies in the sinonasal tract is critical for successful clinical management and important in allowing the surgeon to perform safe functional endoscopic s

Functional microanatomy of nasal turbinals in bats.

Nasal turbinals are scrolled or folded internal nasal bones. In bats, prior work suggests turbinal anatomy is simplified in association with laryngeal echolocation (especially nasal emitting bats) and in association with insectivory. Using histology and iodine-enhanced micro-computed tomography, we examined a sample of 83 adult bats (54 species) to test these hypotheses more broadly across Chiroptera. Compared to bats that lack the capacity for laryngeal echolocation (i.e., Pteropodidae), all echolocating bats lack some of the more peripheral turbinals (e.g., interturbinals), and many lack at

Bilateral Inferior Head Turbinate Agenesis.

Inferior nasal turbinates play a crucial role in conditioning inhaled air. While hypertrophy of these turbinates is a common cause of nasal obstruction in adults, congenital malformations are extremely rare. Only a few cases of unilateral agenesis have been reported. This report presents the first documented case of bilateral inferior head turbinate agenesis (BITHA). A 22-year-old woman with a history of chronic nasal obstruction, sneezing, and nasal itching was diagnosed with BITHA. Her medical history included trisomy 14 mosaicism and other comorbidities. Clinical examination revealed mild f

Surgical interventions for inferior turbinate hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Nasal obstruction can be induced by various causes; however, inferior turbinate hypertrophy is considered the most frequent cause of this anatomical malfunctioning condition. The current surgical interventional study was focused on comparing the final outcomes of partial inferior turbinectomy (PIT) and powered endoscopic turbinoplasty (PET). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The criterion followed for deciding the successfulness of each surgical method was the rate of occurrence of postoperative complications such as bleeding, crustation, and atrophic rhinitis. Fifty patients who suff

Middle turbinate angiofibroma in an adolescent boy.

Bleeding nasal mass in adolescent boys has customarily been attributed to Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. However, little is known regarding the extranasopharyngeal origin of angiofibroma, as highlighted in this case report of a 15-year-old boy who presented with recurrent epistaxis and nasal obstruction. On constructing a working diagnosis of nasal haemangioma, the patient was taken up for endoscopic excision under general anaesthesia. Intraoperative endoscopic findings and histopathological examination revealed the diagnosis of middle turbinate angiofibroma, which is an extremely rare

Posterior Inferior Turbinate Hypertrophy (PITH).

Hypertrophy of the soft tissue of the posterior inferior turbinate (PITH) may be observed during nasal endoscopy, although the clinical significance is not understood. We report a cross-sectional study of consecutive new patients undergoing baseline nasal endoscopy in a tertiary rhinology clinic. Subjects completed 22-Item Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) questionnaires. Of 391 subjects screened, PITH was present in 62 (15.9%), with a female predominance. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis was comparable between PITH a

Septal and turbinate surgery: is overnight essential?

INTRODUCTION: The performance of septoplasty and turbinate surgery in an outpatient basis is an increasingly established practice, although is still a controversial topic. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 227 patients who underwent septoplasty ± inferior and/or middle turbinoplasty. Demographic, clinical, surgical, and anesthetic data were collected. Our primary outcomes were rates of perioperative complications, prolongation of hospital stay (PHS), unexpected hospital revisits (UHR), or readmissions within 30 days of surgery. RESULTS: The UHR rate was 4.8 and 6.6% in the first 48 h and 30

Ontogeny and Microanatomy of the Nasal Turbinals in Lemuriformes.

The nasal cavity of strepsirrhine primates (lemurs and lorises) has the most primitive arrangement of extant primates. In nocturnal species, the numerous turbinals of the ethmoid bear a large surface area of olfactory mucosa (OM). In this study, we examine turbinal development in four genera of diurnal or cathemeral lemuriformes. In addition, we examined an age series of each genus to detect whether structures bearing OM as opposed to respiratory mucosa (RM) develop differently, as has been observed in nocturnal strepsirrhines. In adults, the maxilloturbinal is covered by highly vascular respi

Intraosseous cavernous haemangioma of the inferior turbinate.

Intraosseous cavernous haemangiomas usually occur in the vertebral and calvarial bones, and account for <1% of primary bone tumours. Nasal cavity intraosseous cavernous haemangiomas are extremely rare. We present a case of a 47-year-old woman with an incidental left inferior turbinate mass noted on CT scan for an unrelated pathology. She had no rhinological symptoms other than a 2-year history of left-sided nasal obstruction. Preoperative imaging failed to determine the aetiology of the mass. The lesion, contiguous with the left inferior turbinate, was successfully resected via an endoscopic a

On the biological plausibility of Wind Turbine Syndrome.

An emerging environmental health issue relates to potential ill-effects of wind turbine noise. There have been numerous suggestions that the low-frequency acoustic components in wind turbine signals can cause symptoms associated with vestibular system disorders, namely vertigo, nausea, and nystagmus. This constellation of symptoms has been labeled as Wind Turbine Syndrome, and has been identified in case studies of individuals living close to wind farms. This review discusses whether it is biologically plausible for the turbine noise to stimulate the vestibular parts of the inner ear and, by e

Intraosseous cavernous hemangioma of the middle turbinate.

Hemangiomas mostly arise from the soft tissues, and intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon. They usually occur in the vertebra and skull bones, and intraosseous hemangioma of the nasal cavity is exceedingly rare. We describe a 56-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital with a tumor in her right nasal cavity, without subjective symptoms such as epistaxis. The tumor was located at the front end of the right middle turbinate. Enhanced computed tomography demonstrated a 3 cm×2cm expansive bony tumor replacing the bottom of the right middle turbinate with some partial enhancement effects. Th

Isolated extramedullary plasmacytoma of the middle turbinate.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare plasma cell proliferative disorder with a predilection for the head and neck region. Occasionally, it presents as a solitary lesion in the nasal cavity. We report a case of an isolated lesion in the middle turbinate of the right nasal cavity. The lesion was completely excised via an endoscopic approach. We also review the pathology and management of plasmacytomas in general.

Middle turbinate angiofibroma in an elderly woman.

BACKGROUND: Angiofibromas are histologically benign vascular tumors, originating from the nasopharynx, near by the area of sphenopalatine foramen. These neoplasms occur typically in male adolescents. Reports of primary extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas have appeared sporadically in the literature in English. We present the first case of an elderly woman with tumor arising from the middle turbinate, diagnosed as angiofibroma. CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old female presented with left-sided nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Endoscopic evaluation revealed a polypoid mass arising from the anteroinferio

CT appearance of pneumatized inferior turbinate.

AIM: To study the computed tomography (CT) features of pneumatized inferior turbinate (PIT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of paranasal sinus CT over a period of 12 years showed 16 cases of PIT. The pneumatization pattern was analysed according to the classification proposed by Bolger. Pneumatization was classified into three types: bulbous, lamellar, and extensive. RESULTS: Fourteen patients had unilateral and two patients had bilateral pneumatization (n=18). Seven (39%) of the 18 PIT were bulbous, nine (50%) were lamellar, and two (11%) were of the extensive type. In eight

Bifid inferior turbinate: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: A bifid inferior turbinate is an extremely rare anatomical variation and has been reported in only two cases to date. Including the present report, the uncinate processes were missing in all three patients reported. It is suggested that, in the reported patient, bifid inferior turbinate coexisted with a developmental anomaly of the uncinate process, and that the bifid inferior turbinate represented two separate turbinates originating from the same site. CASE REPORT: We present the first reported case of bilateral bifid inferior turbinates, with a secondary middle turbinate, in a p

Anosmia following superior turbinate resection.

Nasal polyposis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the sinus mucosa responsible for, among other symptoms, alteration of the sense of smell in a considerable percentage of patients. One of the aims of surgical treatment is the recuperation of the sense of smell, especially in patients with good preoperative indicators suggesting a possible favorable outcome. The purposes of this brief clinical report are to present the case of a patient with nasal polyposis who developed anosmia after a bilateral endoscopic functional ethmoidectomy with inadvertent resection of both superior turbinates, and
