FERN: is it possible to conduct a randomised controlled trial of intervention or expectant management for early-onset selective fetal growth restriction in monochorionic twin pregnancy - protocol for a prospective multicentre mixed-methods feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Selective fetal growth restriction (sFGR) in monochorionic twin pregnancy, defined as an estimated fetal weight (EFW) of one twin <10th centile and EFW discordance ≥25%, is associated with stillbirth and neurodisability for both twins. The condition poses unique management difficulties: on the one hand, continuation of the pregnancy carries a risk of death of the smaller twin, with a high risk of co-twin demise (40%) or co-twin neurological sequelae (30%). On the other, early delivery to prevent the death of the smaller twin may expose the larger twin to prematurity, with the ass

Gender mix in twins and fetal growth, length of gestation and adult cancer risk.

This study evaluated the effect of gender mix (the gender combinations of twin pairs) on fetal growth and length of gestation, and reviewed the literature on the long-term effects of this altered fetal milieu on cancer risk. In singletons, it is well established that females weigh less than males at all gestations, averaging 125-135 g less at full term. This gender difference is generally believed to be the result of the effect of androgens on fetal growth. The gender difference in fetal growth is greater before the third trimester and less towards term, with males growing not only more, but a

Twin study method: Unlocking genetic and environmental interactions.

Twin studies offer a powerful approach for disentangling genetic and environmental influences on human traits. By comparing monozygotic twins with identical genetic makeup, researchers can more accurately identify the environmental contributions to phenotypic variation. Structural equation modeling provides a theoretical framework for estimating the relative contributions of additive genetic effects, shared environmental factors, and unique environmental influences. This model allows researchers to determine the most suitable parameters for explaining the observed data in twin populations. In

Do Males Affect Twinning Events? A Review of Current Findings/Twin Research Reviews: Monozygotic Twins Discordant for Parkinson's Disease; Fetal Loss in Twin Pregnancies Following Prenatal Diagnosis; Uterine Rupture and Repair in an Early Twin Pregnancy; Twin Study of Affectionate Communication/Human Interest: Conjoined Twins in a Triplet Set; Identical Twin Nurses Deliver Identical Twins; Identical Twins Discordant for COVID-19 Recovery Course; Identical Twins Pass Away from COVID-19; Archeological Finds of Oldest Identical Twins.

Research into the origins of twinning has focused mostly on contributions from the female side of the family. A review of current findings suggests that possible male contributions to twinning events have been overlooked. This section is followed by brief reviews of twin research concerning monozygotic twins discordant for Parkinson's disease, fetal loss in twin pregnancies following prenatal diagnosis, uterine rupture and repair in an early twin pregnancy and a twin study of affectionate communication. The concluding portion of this article presents human interest stories involving twins that

Prevalence of a history of testicular cancer in a cohort of elderly twins.

Prior studies have suggested that the risk of testicular cancer among dizygotic twins may exceed that among monozygotic twins or the general population. Cryptorchidism is associated with testicular cancer and twinship, and therefore might potentially explain the findings of the prior studies. In 1993-1994, when they were 66 to 77 years of age, 14,326 twin individuals in the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council Twin Registry were interviewed by telephone. A history of testicular cancer was reported by 5 (0.08%) of 5951 monozygotic twins and 11 (0.16%) of 6992 dizygotic twins.

Birth weight discordance, gene expression, and DNA methylation: A scoping review of epigenetic twin studies.

BACKGROUND: Birth weight is considered as an important indicator of environmental conditions during prenatal development. Molecular mechanisms, including epigenetic modifications, play central roles in the body's adaptation to ever-changing environmental conditions. Twin study designs offer a powerful approach for distinguishing environmental from genetic effects. Specifically, within-pair comparisons of monozygotic twins can be used to differentiate unique individual environmental factors from shared environmental and genetic contributions. Notably, numerous studies in monozygotic twins have

Stolen twin: fascination and curiosity/twin research reports: evolution of sleep length; dental treatment of craniopagus twins; cryopreserved double embryo transfer; gender options in multiple pregnancy/current events: appendectomy in one twin; autistic twin marathon runners; 3D facial recognition; twin biathletes.

The story of her allegedly stolen twin brother in Armenia is recounted by a 'singleton twin' living in the United States. The behavioral consequences and societal implications of this loss are considered. This case is followed by twin research reports on the evolution of sleep length, dental treatment of craniopagus conjoined twins, cryopreserved double embryo transfer (DET), and gender options in multiple pregnancy. Current events include the diagnosis of appendectomy in one identical twin, the accomplishments of autistic twin marathon runners, the power of three-dimensional (3D) facial recog

Asthma genetics and intermediate phenotypes: a review from twin studies.

It has been long recognised that asthma and related phenotypes have an important hereditary nature, in which inheritance does not follow the classical Mendelian patterns and the exact mode of inheritance is not known. Linkage, association studies and genome-wide screening suggest that many genes are involved in the pathogenesis of asthma. Twin studies have contributed significantly to our understanding on the genetics of asthma, especially the large-scale twin studies in different parts of the world which have showed comparable results. With the shortcomings of the twin method borne in mind, m

Twin studies of eating disorders: a review.

OBJECTIVE: Twin methodology has been used to delineate etiological factors in many medical disorders and behavioral traits including eating disorders. Although twin studies are powerful tools, their methodology can be arcane and their implications easily misinterpreted. METHOD: The goals of this study are to (a) review the theoretical rationale for twin studies; (b) provide a framework for their interpretation and evaluation; (c) review extant twin studies on eating disorders; and (d) explore the implications for understanding etiological issues in eating disorders. DISCUSSION: On the basis

How the mouse got its spots.

One's ultimate phenotype is the result of a combination of genotype and environment, and includes a poorly understood component termed "developmental noise". This "developmental noise", also known as "intangible variation", is rarely discussed even though it appears to make a significant contribution to the variance of quantitative traits within a species. The molecular basis of developmental noise remains unknown, but it appears to be established in embryonic development and to be retained for the life of the organism. We propose that the molecular basis of developmental noise is, at least in

Understanding Comorbidity Between Specific Learning Disabilities.

Current definitions of specific learning disability (SLD) identify a heterogeneous population that includes individuals with weaknesses in reading, math, or writing, and these academic difficulties often co-occur in many of the same individuals. The Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center (CLDRC) is an interdisciplinary, multisite research program that uses converging levels of analysis to understand the genetic and environmental etiology, neuropsychology, and developmental outcomes of SLDs in reading (RD), math (MD), and writing (WD), along with the comorbidity between these SLDs and o

On the twin risk in autism.

Autism is considered by many to be the most strongly genetically influenced multifactorial childhood psychiatric disorder. In the absence of any known gene or genes, the main support for this is derived from family and twin studies. Two recent studies (Greenberg et al. 2001; Betancur et al. 2002) suggested that the twinning process itself is an important risk factor in the development of autism. If true, this would have major consequences for the interpretation of twin studies. Both studies compared the number of affected twin pairs among affected sib pairs to expected values in two separate s

Complete hydatidiform mole and a coexistent fetus following ovulation induction in a patient with Sheehan's syndrome: a first case report and review of literature.

Pregnancy in Sheehan's syndrome (SS) is extremely rare. We present the first reported case of twin pregnancy with complete hydatiform mole (CHM) and a coexistent fetus (CHCF) in a patient with SS. A 29-year-old Chinese patient with SS became pregnant following one cycle of ovulation induction with human menopausal gonadotropin after secondary infertility. A normal live fetus and a low echogenic mass suspected hydatidiform mole (HM) were detected by ultrasound examinations at gestational week 8. The couple highly desired to continue the pregnancy because it is very hard to get pregnant for the

Changes in D-dimer levels after cesarean section in women with singleton and twin pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: To determine how the D-dimer level changes after cesarean section, a topic that has not been studied extensively. METHODS: The D-dimer level (μg/mL) was measured in 792 and 119 women with singleton and twin pregnancies, respectively, on the day or one day before cesarean section and on postpartum days 1, 3, and 7. None of the women developed venous thromboembolism with clinical symptoms. The data for other two women who underwent a cesarean section and developed pulmonary thromboembolism on postpartum days 0 to 1 were also presented. RESULTS: The preoperative D-dimer level (median

[Mortality among twins after the age of six: the programming hypothesis versus the twin-method].

According to the foetal-origins hypothesis the risk of adult morbidity and mortality is heightened by intrauterine growth retardation. Twins, and in particular monozygotic twins, experience growth retardation in utero. A total of 8495 twin individuals born 1870-1900 in Denmark were followed through 1991 and death rates were calculated on a cohort basis. Deaths rates for twins and the general population were not significantly different except for females aged 60-89: mortality for female twins in this age group was 1.14 times (SE 0.03) higher than the general population. Female dizygotic twins e

A critique of the possibility of genetic inheritance of homosexual orientation.

Many workers in human sexuality have tried to discover causes of sexual orientation. No one theory has proved to be satisfactory. Studies of monozygotic and dizygotic twins, some of whom have been reared separately and some together, suggest that there may be an inherited component of homosexuality. Other studies, particularly those concerned with the evolution of human sexuality, question such a possibility. A further question arises because a large part of the human population is neither exclusively homosexual nor exclusively heterosexual. This paper will examine the evidence for genetic inh
