Re-fractures of the paediatric radius and/or ulna: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the radius and/or ulna are one of the most common injuries in children. Evidence identifying risk factors for refracture, however, has not been summarised in a systematic review. Guidance for counselling patients and parents to minimise the risk of refracture is limited. The aims of this study are to 1) to determine if casting time 6 weeks or less is a risk factor for refracture after paediatric radius and/or ulna fractures, 2) to identify other risk factors for refracture after paediatric radius and/or ulna fractures and 3) to develop more accurate guidelines for coun

The shaft fractures of the radius and ulna in children: current concepts.

The incidence of forearm shaft fractures in children has increased in recent years. They are challenging to treat and they can result in several long-lasting complications. The treatment of children's fractures needs to be individualized to their needs. Nonoperative care will be satisfactory for young, preschool children and it is primarily treatment in stable fractures of children at every age. Injury mechanism must be understood to perform appropriate closed reduction. Immobilization using a long-arm cast needs to be focused against the deforming muscle forces - in particular those that rota

Stress fracture of ulna due to excessive push-ups.

Stress fractures are most common in the weight-bearing bones of the lower extremities and spine, but are rarely found in non-weight-bearing bones of the body. Stress fracture of the ulna is extremely rare. We report a case of complete stress fracture of ulna caused due to excessive push ups in a young athlete. Conservative management was successful in healing of fracture and returning this patient back to his previous activity level. Physician should have high index of suspicion, whenever they encounter a young athlete complaining of forearm pain.

Surgical interventions for diaphyseal fractures of the radius and ulna in children.

BACKGROUND: Diaphyseal forearm fractures in children are a common injury usually resulting from a fall. The treatment options include non-surgical intervention (manipulation and application of cast) and surgical options such as internal fixation with intramedullary nails or with plate and screws. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits and harms) of a) surgical versus non-surgical interventions, and b) different surgical interventions for the fixation of diaphyseal fractures of the forearm bones in children. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group Spe

Avulsion fracture at the fovea of the ulna. A report of two cases.

We report two cases of avulsion fractures at the fovea of the ulna. This injury is caused by a strong distraction force which avulses the insertion of the triangular ligament at the fovea of the ulna. This injury can be classed as an injury to the triangular fibrocartilage complex.

Conservative treatment of distal ulna metaphyseal fractures associated with distal radius fractures in elderly people.

INTRODUCTION: Although volar locking plates (VLPs) have been exclusively used for unstable distal radius fractures (DRFs), the optimal management of distal ulna fractures (DUFs) remains controversial. Internal fixation using a plate for DUFs might be challenging because of the presence of osteoporotic bone and fragile bone fragments in elderly patients. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that a strategy including VLP fixation for DRFs and non-intervention for DUFs with early wrist mobilization would provide encouraging results in elderly patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients (17 women

Emergency Medicine Management of Distal Radius and Ulna Fractures: Narrative Review.

IMPORTANCE: Distal radius fractures and distal ulna fractures are common orthopedic injuries treated in emergency departments (ED). Our goal in this narrative review was to present emergency physicians with a single source that covers the evaluation and treatment of distal radius fractures and distal ulna fractures across the lifetime of our patients. There are differences in the treatment algorithms for distal radius fractures between pediatric, young adult, and geriatric patients. OBSERVATIONS: Pediatric distal radius fractures are defined by their relation to the growth plate and are influ

The Novel Hooked Kirschner Wire Technique for Ulna Coronoid Process Fractures.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to introduce a novel technique to improve the ease of fixing of even small fragments of the coronoid process and report the clinical outcomes of this method. METHODS: Forty-nine patients with ulnar coronoid process fractures fixed using the hooked Kirschner wire (K-wire) technique at our hospital from 2007 to 2019 were reviewed. Radiological features and fracture union were assessed using simple radiographs. Functional outcomes of the treated elbows were evaluated at the final follow-up visit using the Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS). RESULTS: All pa

Nailing vs. plating in comminuted proximal ulna fractures - a biomechanical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Comminuted proximal ulna fractures are severe injuries with a high degree of instability. These injuries require surgical treatment, usually angular stable plating or double plating is performed. Nailing of proximal ulna fracture is described but not performed regularly. The aim of this study was to compare a newly developed, locked proximal ulna nail with an angular stable plate in an unstable fracture of the proximal ulna. We hypothesize, that locked nailing of the proximal ulna will provide non-inferior stability compared to locked plating. METHODS: A defect fracture distal to

Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis in small animals: radius and ulna fractures.

Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) is a biologically friendly approach to fracture reduction and stabilization that is applicable to many radius and ulna fractures in small animals. An appropriate knowledge of the anatomy of the antebrachium and careful preoperative planning is essential. This article describes the MIPO technique, which entails stabilization of the fractured radius with a bone plate and screws that are applied without performing an extensive open surgical approach. This technique results in good outcomes, including a rapid time to union and return of function.

Acute dislocations of the distal radioulnar joint and distal ulna fractures.

This article reviews acute dislocations of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) and distal ulna fractures. Acute dislocations can occur in isolation or in association with a fracture to the distal radius, radial metadiaphysis (Galeazzi fracture), or radial head (Essex-Lopresti injury). Distal ulna fractures may occur in isolation or in combination with a distal radius fracture. Both injury patterns are associated with high energy. Outcomes are predicated on anatomic reduction and restoration of the stability of the DRUJ.

Physeal fractures of the distal radius and ulna: long-term prognosis.

OBJECTIVES: The long-term prognosis of injuries to the distal physis of forearm bones, including complications such as radioulnar length discrepancy and styloid nonunion, has not been extensively studied. Reliable radiographic prognostic criteria to predict physeal disturbance at trauma are also lacking. The aim of this study is to investigate both issues. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: University hospital. PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: One hundred sixty-three lesions to the distal physis of the forearm bones in 157 patients were available for a long-term follow-up. Seventy-seven injuries o

Ipsilateral fractures of the proximal ulna and distal radius (Colles type).

A 43-year-old female fell backward outside her home while carrying a watering can. She sustained an ipsilateral fracture of the proximal ulna and distal radius (Colles fracture). The ulnar fracture was plated, and the Colles fracture was managed by closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wiring. The patient recovered without incident. This association of forearm fractures is unusual. Both fractures can be caused by a fall on the hand with the wrist in mid-extension and the elbow flexed, and they probably occurred in quick succession.

Extra-articular low-velocity gunshot fractures of the radius and ulna.

Low-velocity gunshot fractures of the forearm are complex injuries and previously published studies have not emphasized the problems particular to these forearm lesions. Of the twenty-nine patients in this series, thirteen had peripheral nerve injuries, three had impending Voklmann's ischemia, and ten had delayed union or malunion of fractures after treatment by closed methods. Only thirteen had none of these problems. Eight patients had long-term disability resulting either from permanent nerve damage with loss of sensation or weakness of grip, or from significant loss of motion following del

A Comprehensive X-ray Dataset for Pediatric Ulna and Radius Fractures Analysis.

Pediatric forearm fractures, particularly involving the ulna and radius, are among the most common childhood injuries. However, the lack of standardized and openly available datasets has limited progress in artificial intelligence research and constrained clinical validation. To address this issue, we present the Pediatric Ulna and Radius Fractures (PediURF) dataset, a first-of-its-kind, publicly available collection of over 10,000 de-identified images. Each image is carefully annotated by expert radiologists and categorized into three clinically relevant types: proximal, midshaft, and distal

Reproducibility of the Mayo and Schatzker classification systems in proximal ulna fractures.

INTRODUCTION: A fracture classification system should provide a reliable and reproducible means of communication between different parties. It should be logical and understandable, with few categories to memorize. The aim of this study was to determine the intra- and interobserver reliability of the Schatzker and Mayo classification systems for the assessment of proximal ulna fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Intra- and interobserver reliability studies were conducted on 39 X-rays of injured elbows drawn randomly from 74 cases previously used in a series on predictors of ulnohumeral osteoarth
