We treated 50 patients (average age 47.9 years) with a stabilized subcutaneous transposition of the ulnar nerve. The average follow-up period was 42.4 months. The indication was cubital tunnel syndrome in 19 patients and injuries around the elbow in 31 patients. Postoperatively, satisfactory results were obtained in all the patients, and there was no complication or aggravation of the preoperative symptoms. None of the patients experienced slipping back of the nerve to the cubital tunnel. In the 31 patients with injuries around the elbow, there was only one patient with transient aggravation o

Entrapment of the ulnar nerve at the elbow is the second most common focal peripheral neuropathy. Recent advances have facilitated the electrodiagnosis of this common nerve entrapment. The goals of electrodiagnosis are to localize ulnar nerve dysfunction, confirm that the disturbance is confined to the ulnar nerve, and assess the severity of ulnar nerve dysfunction. The goal of this review is to highlight the important advances in anatomy, neurophysiology and methodology that impact upon the electrodiagnosis of entrapment of the ulnar nerve at the elbow, illustrate the limits of electrodiagnos

During the dissection of the left forearm and hand of a 57-year old male cadaver fixed in 10% formalin, it has been noted that the medial proper palmar digital nerve to the little finger arose from the dorsal branch of the ulnar nerve, instead of the superficial branch of the same nerve. The dorsal branch, given off by the ulnar nerve in the forearm, coursed distally and dorsally deep to the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle. Some 2 cm proximal to the pisiform, it pierced the deep fascia on the posteromedial side of the muscle to become superficial. At this point, one of the three branches given off

Reexamination of 19 reconstructive operations for common injuries of the median and ulnar nerves performed during 15 years was carried out. The localization of the injuries, the joined injuries, the method of nerve reconstruction and the treatment of the other injuries are given in details. 13 patients could be reached for the late follow-up, their clinical, EMG and ENG results are described.

A peripheral nerve tuberculoma, the third on record, involved the ulnar nerve, as did the other two. This case report is followed by a discussion of the pathogenesis and diagnosis of this lesion. Its pathogenesis is unclear. Direct infection from a tuberculous sister was disproved, and infection via a local wound is highly unlikely. A previous, silent form of tuberculosis seems to have been the cause.

With recent attention being placed on the median palmar cutaneous nerve, a surgical approach, ulnar to the axis of the ring finger ray, has been advocated for median nerve decompression at the wrist. Painful hypothenar neuromas have developed in two patients with this type of incision. After dissecting 21 cadaver forearms and hands, three classic and two variants of the ulnar palmar cutaneous nerve were identified and found to emerge in the subcutaneous tissue ulnar to the ring finger ray. The terminal branches supplied the hypothenar skin and extended radially to the ring finger ray axis. Bec

The ulnar nerve is the second most commonly entrapped nerve after the median nerve. Although clinical evaluation and electrodiagnostic studies remain widely used for the evaluation of ulnar neuropathy, advancements in imaging have led to increased utilization of these newer / better imaging techniques in the overall management of ulnar neuropathy. Specifically, high-resolution ultrasonography of peripheral nerves as well as MRI has become quite useful in evaluating the ulnar nerve in order to better guide treatment. The caliber and fascicular pattern identified in the normal ulnar nerves are i

A 32-year-old man presented to our clinic complaining of numbness of the little finger and the ulnar aspect of the ring finger of his right hand. He complained about the weakness of grip strength and ulnar-sided pain. At the first glance, wasting of the first interossei muscle could be recognized. In his detailed examination, the medial half of the palmar aspect of the hand, including the hypothenar eminence, along with the palmar side of the fourth and fifth digits showed decreased sensation to light touch. Severe weakness of the abductor digiti minimi (ADM) was noted. No sensory loss was fou

OBJECT: In this article the authors present a retrospective analysis of 654 surgical outcomes in patients with ulnar nerve entrapments, injuries, and tumors during a 30-year period.
METHODS: Data were gathered between 1968 and 1998 at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. Mechanisms of injuries or lesions included 460 entrapments at the elbow level (70%), 76 lacerations (12%), 52 stretches/contusions (8%), 34 fractures/dislocations (5%), 12 gunshot wounds (2%), two injection-induced injuries (0.3%), and 13 nerve sheath tumors (2%). In cases of entrapment, direct operative recordi

PURPOSE: Ulnar nerve palsy is an unusual complication of postvitrectomy positioning.
METHOD: We report two such cases.
RESULTS: Both patients developed ulnar nerve palsy after maintaining a face-down position for 2 to 4 weeks after vitrectomy with intraocular perfluoro-octane. The neuropathy resolved in one patient after he was instructed to avoid prolonged pressure on his flexed elbows, whereas the other patient ultimately required surgical decompression of the nerve at the elbow.
CONCLUSION: Ulnar nerve palsy can result from postvitrectomy positioning associated with prolonged direct pres

The effects of different arm positions during open-heart surgery on the incidence of ulnar nerve injury were studied prospectively in 35 patients. It was concluded that ulnar nerve damage was common and was due to nerve compression at the elbow. A significant reduction in the incidence of nerve injury can be effected by placing the forearms above the head rather than at the patient's side.

Tardy ulnar nerve palsy is a known complication of cubitus valgus. The options for treating the ulnar neuropathy include anterior nerve transposition or neurolysis. We report on an 11-year-old boy who had a tardy ulnar nerve palsy due to cubitus valgus resulting from a non-union of a lateral condyle fracture of the humerus. Anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve was not done after the closing wedge osteotomy of the distal humerus. The close wedge osteotomy relieved the tension on the nerve and not transposing the ulnar nerve anteriorly prevented an iatrogenic nerve injury. The patient had n

In Oberlin's nerve transfer, a fascicle of the ulnar nerve is sutured end-to-end to the branch of musculocutaneous nerve to the biceps muscle in the arm. This transfer is commonly used in adult traumatic C5-C6 avulsion injuries of the brachial plexus. We report the successful use of Oberlin nerve transfer in an ulnar ray-deficient infant with brachial plexus birth palsy.

Hypothenar hammer syndrome is a rare medical condition that is usually associated with repetitive hand trauma. In this article, we delineate the importance of the nerve conduction velocity study to help determine objectively whether neuropathy is significant to the point that surgical means should be considered in absence of obvious ischemic change.

INTRODUCTION: Several mechanisms are involved in ischemia or mechanical compression of ulnar nerve at the elbow.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We hereby present the case of a road accident victim, who received a radial head excision for an isolated fracture of the radial head and complicated by onset of cubital tunnel syndrome. This outcome could be the consequence of an iatrogenic valgus of the elbow due to excision of the radial head. Hitherto the surgical treatment of choice it is gradually been abandoned due to development of radial head implant arthroplasty. However, this management option is st
