Prenatal diagnosis of Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome: Ultrasonography and molecular karyotyping results.

OBJECTIVE: To present the experience on prenatal diagnosis of Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) to further delineate the fetal presentation of this syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective analysis of ten pregnancies with fetal WHS identified by chromosomal microarray (CMA). Clinical data were reviewed for these cases, including maternal demographics, indications for invasive testing, sonographic findings, CMA results and pregnancy outcomes. RESULTS: Three cases were diagnosed at the first trimester because of an increased NT or cystic hygroma. The remaining seven cases were identified

Prenatal diagnosis of truncus arteriosus using multiplanar display in 4D ultrasonography.

Prenatal diagnosis of truncus arteriosus with two-dimensional sonography requires expertise in fetal echocardiography. Indeed, truncus arteriosus shares with tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) the sonographic finding of a single arterial trunk overriding a VSD. The diagnosis of truncus arteriosus can be confirmed when either the main pulmonary artery or its branches are visualized arising from the truncus itself. This requires sequential examination of multiple scanning planes and a process of mental reconstruction of their spatial relationships. T

Prenatal diagnosis of otocephaly using two-dimensional and three-dimensional ultrasonography.

We report a case of the prenatal diagnosis of a very rare anomaly, namely isolated otocephaly, using two-dimensional and three-dimensional ultrasound at 24 weeks of gestation. Two-dimensional ultrasound revealed polyhydramnios, absence of a stomach shadow, hypotelorism and a proboscis-like mass. Three-dimensional ultrasound gave a precise demonstration of the striking craniofacial features of otocephaly including agnathia, synotia, microstomia and protuberance of the nose-mouth fusion. The use of three-dimensional ultrasound provided a whole view of the very rare lethal malformation in utero a

[Prenatal diagnosis of arrhythmias and associated congenital cardiac abnormalities using ultrasonography].

Cardiac arrhythmias are one of the most frequent indications for a 2D and Doppler fetal echocardiographic assessment (DE). If accompanied by a non-immune fetal hydrops, arrhythmias (A) involve an increased risk of intrauterine death. Some A and mainly the bradyarrhythmias (BA) can be the first sign of major cardiac malformation (CM). In a series of 404 pregnancies between week 17 and 40 of gestation (mean 27.6 weeks), a Doppler echocardiography was carried out; in 137 (35%) fetuses (F) this examination was based on the indication of arrhythmia. 33 (24.2%) of these fetuses showed a cardiac malf

Key imaging features for differentiating cystic biliary atresia from choledochal cyst: prenatal ultrasonography and postnatal ultrasonography and MRI.

PURPOSE: This study compared clinical and radiologic differences between cystic biliary atresia (cBA) and choledochal cyst (CC) type Ia/b. METHODS: Infants (≤12 months old) who were diagnosed with cBA or CC type Ia/b from 2005 to 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Imaging features on preoperative ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were compared between the cBA and CC groups. Logistic regression and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) analyses were performed for the diagnosis of cBA. Changes in cyst size were also evaluated when prenatal US exam

Prenatal ultrasonography and genetic analysis of fetal cleidocranial dysplasia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an infrequent clinical condition with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. It is characterized by abnormal clavicles, patent sutures and fontanelles, supernumerary teeth, and short stature. Approximately 60%-70% of patients with CCD have mutations in the RUNX family transcription factor 2 gene. However, prenatal diagnosis of CCD is difficult when the family history is unknown. CASE SUMMARY: We report a rare case of fetal CCD with an unknown family history, confirmed by prenatal ultrasonography and genetic testing at a gestational age of 16 we

Prenatal diagnosis of congenital harlequin ichthyosis with 2D, 3D, and 4D ultrasonography.

Harlequin fetus is a rare and mostly fatal form of congenital ichthyosis that can be diagnosed by fetal skin biopsy in patients with a family history of the disease. More recently DNA analysis of amniocentesis and chorion villus sampling materials have also been utilized. We report a case of prenatally diagnosed congenital ichthyosis with no previous family history. Diagnosis was mainly achieved by 3D and 4D ultrasonography findings such as diffuse scaling of the skin, digital contractures, flattened rudimentary external ear, nasal hypoplasia, everted eyelids, typical fish mouth appearance, ma

Prenatal diagnosis of posterior mediastinal lymphangioma by two- and three-dimensional ultrasonography.

Lymphangioma is a rare benign tumor characterized by proliferating lymph vessels and composed of large cyst spaces with endothelium-lined channels of varying dimensions. The incidence of lymphangioma is approximately one in 6000 pregnancies. Less than 1% of lymphangiomas are purely mediastinal. The great majority of cases are of cystic lymphangioma, but very rarely there is a mixed lesion consisting of multiple cysts of dilated capillary and lymph vessels. We report a case of posterior mediastinal lymphangioma diagnosed at 28 weeks' gestation, in which three-dimensional ultrasonography was hel

Prenatal ultrasonography and neonatal imaging of complete cleft sternum: a case report.

The prenatal diagnosis of a complete cleft sternum was established in a fetus of a twin pregnancy at 22 weeks' gestation. We present the prenatal imaging and correlation with postnatal magnetic resonance imaging and high-resolution ultrasonography. Thinned and depressed midline anterior chest wall transmitting the cardiac pulsation was the clue to the diagnosis, and the defective sternum could be identified on close sonographic observation. Successful surgical correction was undertaken at 2 months of age. There were no major associated abnormalities such as ectopia cordis or midline abdominal

Improving Prenatal Diagnosis Precision for Congenital Clubfoot by Using Three-Dimensional Ultrasonography.

Prenatal diagnosis of clubfoot traditionally relied on two-dimensional ultrasonography. To enhance diagnosis and predict postnatal outcomes, we examined the parameters that differentiate pathological clubfoot using three-dimensional ultrasonography. In our retrospective study, we examined the findings of prenatal ultrasound and the postnatal outcomes of pregnancies with suspected congenital clubfoot between 2018 and 2021. Based on the three-dimensional perspective, we measured the angles of varus, equinus, calcaneopedal block, and forefoot adduction and compared the sonographic variables betwe

Evaluation of prenatal hydronephrosis: novel criteria for predicting vesicoureteral reflux on ultrasonography.

PURPOSE: Radiographic evaluation for prenatal hydronephrosis often includes voiding cystourethrography to ascertain whether vesicoureteral reflux is present. We sought to determine whether use of voiding cystourethrography could be limited to those patients at greatest risk for vesicoureteral reflux. We hypothesized that vesicoureteral reflux could be predicted by findings on renal/bladder ultrasonography of hydroureter, renal dysmorphia and/or duplication. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the records of patients with prenatal hydronephrosis who underwent initial postnatal ultrasonography a

Prenatal diagnosis of Pena-Shokeir syndrome phenotype by ultrasonography and MR imaging.

Pena-Shokeir syndrome phenotype is characterized by neurogenic arthrogryposis, facial anomalies, polyhydramnios and lung hypoplasia. Prenatal US is crucial in showing Pena-Shokeir syndrome phenotype in addition to demonstrating reduced fetal movements or akinesia as an underlying aetiological factor as early as the 14th week of gestation. Several reports of prenatal diagnosis of Pena-Shokeir syndrome phenotype by US have been published. In this report, MRI findings providing prenatal diagnosis are presented.

Prenatal evaluation of bidirectional epignathus: comparison of ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Epignathus is an unusual, benign, congenital teratoma of the hard palate. Most of these teratomas are unidirectional and protrude through the mouth. Hence, the prognosis depends on the size of the tumor and degree of face distortion and airway obstruction. Occasionally, intracranial extension of the tumor is present, involving and destroying the brain tissue, resulting in a poor prognosis. The authors describe 2 cases of bidirectional epignathus, showing the different findings on ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Non-immune hydrops fetalis: rapidity of onset and usefulness of prenatal ultrasonography.

Non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) has become more common than immune hydrops fetalis as a cause of fetal hydrops and its contribution to the total perinatal mortality rate has increased from 0.1% to 3.0% for the 10 years to 1979. A case is reported where an antenatal ultrasonograph performed within 24 hours of delivery showed hydrops was not present, however, at birth the infant was grossly hydropic and died despite intensive management. This case shows the rapidity of onset of NIHF and the devastating effect of this disorder. A review of two large series of NIHF revealed that in only 11.4% an

Neonatal outcome of fetuses with urinary tract abnormalities diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonography.

Between 1979 and 1986 an abnormality of the urinary tract was diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound examination in 93 fetuses. Postnatal investigation at a large teaching hospital showed a definite abnormality in 85 infants, 66 of whom were boys. An obstructed urinary tract, usually requiring surgery, was present in 46 infants. Other abnormalities included a multicystic kidney (in 15 infants), vesicoureteric reflux (in 9), prune-belly syndrome (in 5) and polycystic kidneys (in 5). Early recognition and treatment of urinary tract disorders in infants should be accompanied by informed prenatal counse

[Congenital hydronephrosis detected by prenatal ultrasonography: the effect of pyeloplasty on renal function].

PURPOSE: Prenatal detection of congenital hydronephrosis has raised new questions with regard to the need of management and the indications for operation. Moreover, there is considerable controversy whether or not pyeloplasty improves long-term renal function. We evaluated the operative results of this entity under the setting of well defined indications for surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The indications for pyeloplasty included Society for Fetal Urology-grade (SFU-grade) 3 and grade 4 hydronephrosis on ultrasonogram together with obstructive pattern on modified "Well Tempered" diuretic reno

The prenatal growth of the human body determined by the measurement of bones and organs by ultrasonography.

This paper presents the ultrasonographic analysis of the growth of two groups of human fetuses, one longitudinal and the other cross-sectional. Measurements of all the long bones were taken, as well as measurements of the following diameters: Biparietal, occipitofrontal, thoracic and abdominal anterior/posterior and transverse, spinal canal width, arm, forearm, thigh and leg transverse. The bladder and the stomach were also measured. The pregnancies analyzed covered the period between the 8th and 38th week of gestation. Centiles (3rd-97th) were calculated for each structure and week. All pregn

Evaluation of prenatal and postnatal ultrasonography for the diagnosis of fetal double bubble sign.

BACKGROUND: Congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) is commonly detected antenatally through the presence of the "double bubble" sign on prenatal ultrasound, denoting dilatation of the stomach and duodenum. Subsequent postnatal ultrasonography plays a pivotal role in determining the causes of obstruction, thereby informing surgical strategies and neonatal management. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of postnatal ultrasonography in comparison to that of prenatal ultrasound and surgical findings in a cohort of 43 patients with fetal double bubble sign. METHODS: A t
