Frozen section diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma: a prospective study of 64 biopsies.

Useful morphologic criteria for frozen section diagnosis of pancreatic and periampullary carcinoma were established by prospective review of 64 frozen sections in this region, with permanent section correlation and patient follow-up. These were divided into three major and five minor criteria based on frequency of occurrence and reproducibility. Major criteria were: 1) nuclear size variation of 4:1 or greater between ductal epithelial cells, 2) incomplete ductal lumens, and 3) disorganized duct distribution. Minor criteria, less frequently and reproducibly observed but valuable diagnostic aids

Management of tension-type headache.

Tension-type headache is now the term used to describe headaches that have previously been grouped under various ill-defined headings such as 'tension headache', 'stress headache' and 'muscle contraction headache'. Tension-type headaches are characterized by pain that is mild or moderate in severity, bilateral in distribution, pressing or tightening in quality, and unaccompanied by major systemic disturbance or neurological signs. While many people have mild, infrequent tension-type headaches which they do not regard as an illness, a minority have chronic and often daily symptoms. Here we revi

Exploitation, Labor and Sex Trafficking of Children and Adolescents: Health Care Needs of Patients.

Exploitation and labor and sex trafficking of children and adolescents is a major public health problem in the United States and throughout the world. Significant numbers of US and non-US-born children and adolescents (including unaccompanied immigrant minors) are affected by this growing concern and may experience a range of serious physical and mental health problems associated with human trafficking and exploitation (T/E). Despite these considerations, there is limited information available for health care providers regarding the nature and scope of T/E and how providers may help recognize

The effect of peer relationships on academic burnout among rural left-behind children: a chain mediating effect of social support and cognitive reappraisal.

OBJECTIVE: Despite growing evidence on the association between peer relationships and academic burnout among left-behind children, the underlying psychological mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This study targeted rural left-behind children experiencing moderate to high academic burnout, and aimed to explore the serial mediating roles of social support and cognitive reappraisal in the relationship between peer relationships and academic burnout among this high-risk vulnerable group. METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional design, recruiting a total of 888 eligible rural left

Error rates for unvalidated medical age assessment procedures.

During 2014-2015, Sweden received asylum applications from more than 240,000 people, of which more than 40,000 were termed unaccompanied minors. In a large number of cases, claims by asylum seekers of being below 18 years were not trusted by Swedish authorities. To handle the situation, the Swedish national board of forensic medicine (Rättsmedicinalverket, RMV) was assigned by the government to create a centralized system for medical age assessments. RMV introduced a procedure including two biological age indicators; x-ray of the third molars and magnetic resonance imaging of the distal femora

Long-term follow-up of individuals at risk of or who developed resignation syndrome in childhood, were granted residence permits and cared for within the Stockholm region: a register study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate long-term outcomes of individuals at risk of or who developed resignation syndrome (RS) in childhood and who received residence permits in Sweden. METHODS: We followed individuals born 1988–2002, living in Stockholm, in healthcare registers until December 2016 (N = 5,226). The exposed group was defined as exhibiting potential symptoms of RS of varying severity in childhood (n = 107), and compared with their siblings, refugees, unaccompanied migrants, individuals who received child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) without RS, and Swedish-born individuals w

Attitudes, perceived knowledge, and experiences regarding condom use, STIs, transactional sex, and healthcare utilization among young male forced migrants in Stockholm, Sweden: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The experience of forced migration, along with post-migration stressors, can elevate the risk of poor sexual health outcomes among young people. Despite this, little evidence is available on the sexual health needs, behaviors, and healthcare utilization of young male forced migrants in Sweden and elsewhere. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the attitudes, perceived knowledge, experiences, and needs of young Eritrean, Afghan, and Syrian men regarding condom use, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), transactional sex, and sexual healthcare utilization. METHODS: In this quali

Accumulated environmental risk in young refugees - A prospective evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we reported a strong, disease-independent relationship between accumulated preadult environmental risks and violent aggression later in life. Risk factors were interchangeable, and migration was among the explored risks. Alarmed by these data, we assessed collected risk load in young 'Работает' refugees as a specific subgroup of current migration streams and evaluated first signals of behavioral abnormalities. METHODS: In 9 German refugee centers, n = 133 young refugees, not previously in contact with the health system, were recruited, many of them unaccompanied minors. R

Trauma and mental health in young adults who arrived in France as unaccompanied and separated migrant children.

OBJECTIVES: The mental health of unaccompanied and separated minors (UASC) has been widely studied but not their first years of adulthood, often characterised by uncertainty after leaving child protection. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders using standardised and validated research instruments and examine the effect of exposure to trauma. METHODS: One hundred and ten youth (92.7% male, median age 19.7 [18.1-22.8]) from Chambery, Montpellier and La Rochelle were recruited to a cross-sectional exploratory study. During a face-to-face interview, somatof

Acute infection as cause of hospitalization of asylum-seeking children and adolescents in Stockholm, Sweden 2015-2016.

We aimed to identify hospitalizations due to infectious diseases among asylum seekers and compare them to those of the resident population 1.6.2015-31.10.2016. Administrative numbers assigned to hospitalized non-resident children made them identifiable in the discharge register. The examined populations, expressed as person-years, were 334,573 residents and 7565 asylum seekers. There were 2500 episodes of infectious disease in 2240 resident children and 139 episodes in 121 asylum seekers. Among prevalent infections contracted before or during migration, there were 33 cases of tuberculosis, fou

Dysphoric states in the course of manic-depressive illness.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between dysphoric states (episodes in which irritable mood is prominent and relatively persistent) and manic-depressive illness. A further purpose is to clarify the probable causal influence of chemotherapy and the social consequences concerning dysphoria. The observations carried out on 14 patients are illustrated by 2 case reports. A strong tie seems to exist between dysphoric state and manic-depressive illness, especially with respect to typical biorhythmic disturbances. Although the origin of such states is generally unkno

High diagnostic yield of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) in the diagnosis of adolescent pulmonary tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: The microbiological diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (Tb) in a pediatric population is hampered by both low pathogen burden and noncompliance with sputum sampling. Although endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) has been found useful for the evaluation of mediastinal pathologies in adults, for children, sparse data are available. Here, we have evaluated EBUS-TBNA as a diagnostic procedure in children and adolescents with suspected pulmonary Tb. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, we reviewed the charts of unaccompanied refugee minors (

Hepatitis B infection and immunity in migrant children and pregnant persons in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The WHO's global hepatitis strategy aims to achieve viral hepatitis elimination by 2030. Migrant children and pregnant persons represent an important target group for prevention strategies. However, evidence on the burden of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection and the factors affecting its incidence is lacking. METHODS: EMBASE, Global Health, Global Index Medicus, Web of Science and Medline were searched for articles in any language from 1 January 2012 to 8 June 2022. Studies reporting CHB prevalence, disease severity, complications and/or prevention strategies, including vaccinat

Long-term use of tianeptine in 380 depressed patients.

Tianeptine is a new tricyclic compound whose principal action is to increase the reuptake of serotonin. In a multicentre trial in which 380 depressed patients were treated for one year, tianeptine produced a significant reduction in the MADRS scores from day 14, with a sustained reduction maintained for up to 12 months; other measures of efficacy (HRSA, HSCL, and CGI) also reflected the improvement. Only 11% of patients withdrew because of recurrence of depression and 2% because of side-effects, which were mainly drowsiness, irritability, and gastrointestinal disturbance. Apart from a minor re

Late discovery of bodies in indoor settings: A forensic practitioner's view on recognizing cases of social isolation in eastern Attica, Greece.

The late discovery of a deceased is an observable phenomenon in urban centers and is highly associated with unaccompanied deaths. The aim of this study is to investigate the socio-demographic patterns and circumstances surrounding the late discovery of deceased individuals in indoor settings within urban areas, in Greece. The studied sample included 217 decomposing individuals discovered indoors in eastern Attica between the years 2012-2021. The majority of cases involved Greek males aged above 65, single, childless, and living alone. A history of illegal substance and alcohol abuse, psychiatr

Sensitive skin: closing in on a physiological cause.

The phenomenon of 'sensitive skin' is a relatively recent complaint in which certain individuals report more intense and frequent adverse sensory effects than the normal population upon use of cosmetic (personal-care) products. Originally defined as a minority complaint, sensitive skin is now claimed by a majority of women in industrialized countries and nearly half of men. Sensitive skin is self-diagnosed and typically unaccompanied by any obvious physical signs of irritation, and the number of individuals who claim sensitivity has risen steadily with the number of consumer products targeted

Evaluation of vaccine immunity against tetanus, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella and varicella, in migrant adolescents aged 13 to 18 years arriving in Geneva in 2023.

The recent surge in unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (UMAS) arriving in Switzerland presents significant public health challenges, particularly regarding immunization. Many of these adolescents lack vaccination documentation, requiring catch-up vaccination strategies. This study aimed to evaluate immunity against tetanus, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella and varicella among UMAS upon arrival in Switzerland, to optimize vaccination strategies, and provide protection. This retrospective observational study included 100 UMAS patients followed at Geneva University Hospitals in 2023. Patients

Burden of scabies in displacement settings: A systematic review and meta-analysis among forcibly displaced populations.

BACKGROUND: By the end of 2024, an estimated 123.2 million people were forcibly displaced due to conflict and persecution, with 80% residing in low- and middle-income countries. Scabies, a neglected tropical disease affecting around 200 million people globally and causing over 455 million new cases annually, disproportionately affects displaced populations due to overcrowding, poor hygiene, and limited healthcare access. However, global evidence on its prevalence among these groups remains inconsistent. This study aimed to estimate the global pooled prevalence of scabies among forcibly displac

Feasibility of a randomised trial of Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT) with refugee youth: results from a pilot of the Swedish UnaccomPanied yOuth Refugee Trial (SUPpORT).

BACKGROUND: Although post-traumatic stress is prevalent among unaccompanied refugee minors (URM), there are few evidence-based psychological interventions for this group. Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT) is a brief, manualised intervention for trauma-exposed youth, which has shown promising results in exploratory studies. The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the use of TRT among URM by investigating key uncertainties relating to recruitment, randomisation, intervention delivery and data collection.
