Overcoming socioeconomic adversity: Academic resilience in mathematics achievement among children and adolescents in Ireland.

Although socioeconomic disadvantage is linked with academic underachievement, many children from low-income backgrounds perform well in school. Which modifiable factors predict this academic resilience? We examine between- and within-person predictors of one important academic metric - mathematics performance - across adolescence in 1715 (796 male, 919 female) youth living in poverty in Ireland, using data from three waves (9, 13, and 17/18 years) of the Growing Up in Ireland study. Using linear mixed models, math performance was worse when adolescents had more socioemotional and behavioural d

Neurocognition in Pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease: A Review of Data From the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) Study.

Pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with deficits in neurocognitive functioning, ranging from mild to severe, and correlated with the severity of kidney disease. Clinical variables that are associated with neurocognitive deficits include lower kidney function, hypertension, proteinuria, and metabolic acidosis. Commonly reported neurocognitive difficulties include academic underachievement and deficits in attention regulation and executive function as well as somewhat lower intellectual abilities compared with peer and normative data. Although often mild, these neurocognitive d

Educational Gender Gaps.

Cross-country studies reveal two consistent gender gaps in education-underachievement in school by boys and low rates of participation in STEM studies by girls. Recent economics research has shown the importance of social influences on women's STEM avoidance, but male low achievement has been less-studied and tends to be attributed to behavior problems and deficient non-cognitive skills. I revisit the determinants of the gender gap in U.S. educational attainment with a relatively-advantaged sample of young men and women and find that school behavior and measured skills are not very important d

Patterns and Predictors of Service Utilization Among Youth With ADHD-Predominantly Inattentive Presentation.

Objective: This study examined rates and predictors of educational and mental health service utilization among youth with ADHD-predominantly inattentive presentation (ADHD-I). Method: Participants were 199 children with ADHD-I in Grades 2 to 5. Parents reported past-year child service utilization. Parents and teachers rated child ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptom severity and functional impairment. Children completed an academic achievement test. Results: All children had impairment at school and home. Most received some sort of school service (79%), but only 23% received co

Academic performance in ADHD when controlled for comorbid learning disorders, family income, and parental education in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: Scholastic achievement in a nonclinical sample of ADHD children and adolescents was evaluated taking into consideration variables such as comorbid learning disorders, family income, and parental education which may also be associated with poor academic performance. METHOD: After screening for ADHD in 396 students, the authors compared academic performance of 26 ADHD individuals and 31 controls paired for gender, age, and intelligence level considering both mathematics and Portuguese language scores. Learning disorders were investigated and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of M

Investigating behaviour from early- to mid-childhood and its association with academic outcomes in a cohort of children born at risk of neonatal hypoglycaemia.

High rates of academic underachievement at 9-10 years have been identified in children born at risk of neonatal hypoglycaemia. This study investigated the stability of behaviour from early to mid-childhood and how this relates to academic outcomes in children born with at least one risk factor of neonatal hypoglycaemia in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Behaviour data was collected using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Child Behaviour Checklist 1.5-5, and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for 466 children (52 % male; 27 % Māori, 60 % New Zealand European, 2 % Pacific, 11

Supporting the need for an integrated system of care for youth with co-occurring traumatic stress and substance abuse problems.

Adolescents are at high risk for violence exposure and initiation of drug use. Co-occurring substance use and trauma exposure are associated with increased risk of mental health disorders, school underachievement, and involvement with multiple systems of care. Coordination and integration of systems of care are of utmost importance for these vulnerable youth. This study delineates the negative sequelae and increased service utilization patterns of adolescents with a history of trauma, substance abuse, and co-occurring trauma and substance abuse to support the need for integrated mental health

The prevalence of middle ear pathologies in Jerusalem school children.

In the years 1984-85, 2,664 Jerusalem school children aged between 8 and 13 years were checked for middle ear pathologies. This pilot study was part of a preventive medicine project that was also on the alert for cases where hearing problems had led to academic underachievement. The children were checked at school by an otolaryngologist using a pneumatic otoscope. 1.5% of them suffered from secretory otitis media, 3% from attic retractions, 0.3% from chronic otitis media, and 0.07% from cholesteatoma. The total number of children who had middle ear pathologies was 132 (4.95%). In a parallel gr

Fact retrieval deficits in low achieving children and children with mathematical learning disability.

Using 4 years of mathematics achievement scores, groups of typically achieving children (n = 101) and low achieving children with mild (LA-mild fact retrieval; n = 97) and severe (LA-severe fact retrieval; n = 18) fact retrieval deficits and mathematically learning disabled children (MLD; n = 15) were identified. Multilevel models contrasted developing retrieval competence from second to fourth grade with developing competence in executing arithmetic procedures, in fluency of processing quantities represented by Arabic numerals and sets of objects, and in representing quantity on a number line

Comparing two modes of teaching a question-answering strategy for enhancing reading comprehension: didactic and self-instructional training.

This study investigated the comparative efficacy of two instructional approaches--didactic teaching and self-instructional training--in teaching average and poor readers a comprehension question-answering strategy. Forty-five average students and 45 poor readers from Grades 5 and 6 participated. These 38 girls and 52 boys were equally and randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions: didactic teaching of the strategy, self-instruction, or control (no training). Students in the first two treatment conditions learned a mnemonic strategy ("Here," "Hidden," and "in my Head") to indicate

Health in early adulthood and fertility: A study based on the 1958 British cohort.

Health is rarely used as an explanatory variable in fertility studies in high-income contexts, unlike in low-income settings. Using the 1958 National Child Development Study, we explore how self-rated health (SRH) and body mass index (BMI) at age 23 relate to achievement of fertility goals by age 46. We find that worse SRH and a BMI outside the healthy range at age 23 are strongly associated with lower fertility and underachieving fertility goals. While poor SRH is associated with lower fertility mostly among men, BMI outside the healthy range at 23 is more significant for women. Additional an

Verbal deficits in Klinefelter (XXY) adults living in the community.

Forty-two adult males--10 with Klinefelter's syndrome (karyotype XXY), 17 with normal sex chromosome karyotype (XY) but with physical signs of hypogonadism, and 15 presumed to be normal both chromosomally and hormonally--completed tests of Verbal and Nonverbal ability. It was predicted: a) that the XXY group would perform more poorly than the other two groups on tests of Verbal ability, and b) that the XY, hypogonadal group would perform more poorly than the others on tests of Non-verbal ability. The first hypothesis was supported. However, in spite of measurable verbal deficits, the XXY men (

[The impact of malnutrition on brain development, intelligence and school work performance].

The findings from several authors confirm that undernutrition at an early age affects brain growth and intellectual quotient. Most part of students with the lowest scholastic achievement scores present suboptimal head circumference (anthropometric indicator of past nutrition and brain development) and brain size. On the other hand, intellectual quotient measured through intelligence tests (Weschler-R, or the Raven Progressives Matrices Test) has been described positively and significantly correlated with brain size measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); in this respect, intellectual abi

Similarities in the social competencies of learning disabled and low achieving elementary school children.

This study sought to examine distinctions in social competencies between children with learning disabilities (LD) and other children who also experience academic difficulties. Eighty-five children with LD (54 male, 31 female) in Grades 3 through 6 from a large urban school district were compared to a group of low achieving (LA) peers matched on achievement as well as sex, race, and grade. The samples were 42% black, 39% Hispanic, and 19% Anglo. Both groups completed two self-concept questionnaires, a loneliness scale, and a measure of their social relationships outside of school. In addition,

Redefining specific learning disabilities: An attempt to bridge research, policy, and practice through expert consensus.

The definition and identification of specific learning disability (SLD) remain highly contested, with divergent interpretations shaping research, policy, and practice. This study employed the Delphi Method to engage a panel of experts in synthesizing perspectives on how SLD should be defined and what forms of evidence are necessary to support valid identification methods. Key points of agreement included the centrality of academic deficits, unexpected underachievement, environmental considerations, and exclusionary criteria. Most panelists referenced a neurobiological basis for SLD, though per

Longitudinal research on the behavioral characteristics of children with learning disabilities.

This paper summarizes a program of research on the behavioral characteristics of children with learning disabilities (LD) compared to average achievers. Longitudinal studies over a 3-year period beginning in the first and second grades showed that children with LD, as a heterogeneous group, displayed a persistent pattern of maladaptive classroom behavior that distinguished them from average achieving peers and that was associated with continued underachievement over time. Subsequently, children with LD in the longitudinal sample were clustered into seven different subtypes that represented att

Hyperactivity and reading disability: a longitudinal study of the nature of the association.

In order to investigate the possible causal relationships between hyperactivity and educational underachievement that might account for their frequent co-occurrence, four groups of boys, defined by the presence or absence of hyperactivity and specific reading retardation, were identified in an epidemiological study of 7 8-year-old children. They were examined in detail by means of parental interviews and psychological tests and reassessed 9 years later at the age of 16-18 years on a similar range of measures. The findings provided little support for the idea that persistent reading disabilitie

Not all reading disabilities are alike.

In this article, reading disability is defined broadly to refer to below-average achievement in reading comprehension as assessed by a standardized test. With our research we tried to answer the question of whether all children with reading disability share a common etiology of deficient phonology, or constitute heterogeneous groups. The answer to this question was sought in four studies that examined reading disabilities from the perspective of componential skills of reading. In Part 1, the results of the first study are reported. A principal-components analysis of the performance of 139 chil

Learning disabilities, low achievement, and mild mental retardation: more alike than different?

Children identified with learning disabilities (LD), low achievement (LA), or mild mental retardation (MMR) were contrasted on 41 measures of ability, academic achievement, social skills, problem behavior, academic engaged time, perceptual-motor skills, and school history. Both multivariate, univariate, and meta-analytic comparisons among the three groups showed relatively large differences on measures of aptitude and achievement, with the LD group scoring higher on measures of cognitive ability than the LA and MMR groups and the LA group showing higher tested academic achievement than the LD
