Testing the healthy immigrant effect on youth alcohol use: A longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: The healthy immigrant effect (HIE) is a phenomenon observed in developed countries in which recent immigrants report better health compared to the majority population. The purpose of the present study was to examine the HIE by comparing two measures of alcohol use over time across three adolescent groups of differing immigration statuses. METHODS: We examined the HIE by comparing alcohol use quantity and drinking onset longitudinally from grades 7-11 across 1.5, 2nd, and 3+ immigrant generation status youth (N = 2621-3353). Overall, 38.10 % participants completed 5 waves, 30.08 % com

Strong concordance and correlation between direct alcohol biomarkers and alcohol self-report among youth with variable drinking patterns.

BACKGROUND: Heavy drinking among adolescents is associated with various consequences but is often undetected, limiting early intervention. Self-report of alcohol use has strengths but can be inaccurate due to recall biases and underreporting. Objective biomarkers may improve detection of drinking and related consequences, but few adolescent studies have assessed biomarker concordance with subjective self-report. METHODS: Youth aged 15-19 (54 % female) with minimal (n = 22) or heavy (n = 56) drinking patterns attended two research-related visits, approximately 13 days apart. Biospecimens were

State Alcohol Policies Most Strongly Associated With College Students' Drinking, Driving Risks, and Alcohol-Related Harm.

INTRODUCTION: State-level alcohol policies reduce excessive drinking and related harms in the general population, but their effectiveness may vary by policy type and age group. This study examined the associations that mutually exclusive policy subgroups of the Alcohol Policy Scale had with alcohol use and alcohol-related negative consequences among U.S. college students. METHODS: Data were from repeated cross-sectional surveys of 902,486 college students aged 18-24 years from 591 four-year institutions in 47 states during 2008-2019. Outcomes were past 2-week binge drinking, 30-day frequent a

Examining Alcohol-Related Blackouts and Drinking Motives Over Time Among College Women.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive alcohol consumption and its consequences among college women continues despite prevention efforts. One common consequence, alcohol-related blackouts (ARBs), are periods of alcohol-activated anterograde amnesia. The purpose of the current project is to extend the ARB and drinking motive literature by examining their relationship over time. METHOD: A sample of 424 women (88.9% White) completed online surveys assessing their ARBs and drinking motives weekly for 10 weeks. A series of hierarchical generalized linear models were estimated to examine the between-person and withi

Predicting transitions in alcohol use among adolescents and young adults by nicotine and tobacco products used.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize transitions in alcohol consumption behaviors by nicotine and tobacco products (NTPs) used across a diverse cohort of adolescents and young adults. METHODS: A three-state Markov model was applied to six waves of data (2019-2021) collected biannually for 2608 (Nobs=14,152) participants in the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance System 2.0. We examined nine possible transitions across three exclusive states of alcohol use (none, past 30-day drinking, and past 14-day binge drinking). We estimated the probability of transitioning between alcohol use behav

Linking adolescent alcohol use to adult behavioral flexibility: Habitual action-selection and attentional bias.

BACKGROUND: Habitual behavior and attentional bias are distinct cognitive processes that contribute to inflexible behavior. While animal studies provide strong evidence for an association between adolescent alcohol use and impairments in behavioral flexibility in adulthood, such a link in human research has not yet been explored. Moreover, since reduced flexible behavior serves as a risk factor for escalating alcohol intake, continued alcohol use in adulthood may further exacerbate any deficits associated with adolescent drinking. METHODS: We used principal component analysis to create compos

Mechanisms of change in a community-based alcohol prevention framework among adolescents.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of a co-created, multi-component and community-based intervention on adolescent perceptions of social norms relating to alcohol, parental rules about alcohol, and the formal (outside home) and informal (inside home) perceived accessibility of alcohol. A quasi-experimental, longitudinal design was employed with one experimental municipality (52.6%) and one control municipality (47.4%). A sample of N = 2165 adolescents (Mage = 14.2, SD = 1.32, 51% girls) filled out two annual online questionnaires. Results demonstrated that adolescents

Impact of Neuroimmune System Activation by Adolescent Binge Alcohol Exposure on Adult Neurobiology.

Adolescence is a conserved neurodevelopmental period encompassing maturation of glia and the innate immune system that parallels refinement of brain structures, neurotransmitter systems, and neurocircuitry. Given the vast neurodevelopmental processes occurring during adolescence, spanning brain structural and neurocircuitry refinement to maturation of neurotransmitter systems, glia, and the innate immune system, insults incurred during this critical period of neurodevelopment, could have profound effects on brain function and behavior that persist into adulthood. Adolescent binge drinking is c

Sexual Minority Identity and Risky Alcohol Use: the Moderating Role of Aggressive Behavior.

Adolescent alcohol use has significant consequences for concurrent and longitudinal health and wellbeing, with sexual minority youth consistently reporting higher levels of alcohol use than their heterosexual peers. Understanding how individual-difference variables like aggressive behavior are associated with variability in sexual minority adolescents' higher levels of alcohol use offers novel theoretical insight into this vulnerability. The 81,509 participants were drawn from the Profiles of Student life: Attitudes and Behavior Study. They were ages 14-17 years (M = 15.38, SD = 1.09) and 50.1

An Ecological Momentary Assessment Approach of Environmental Triggers in the Role of Daily Affect, Rumination, and Movement Patterns in Early Alcohol Use Among Healthy Adolescents: Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a period characterized by an increased susceptibility to developing risky alcohol consumption habits. This susceptibility can be influenced by social and situational factors encountered in daily life, which, in conjunction with emotions and thoughts, contribute to behavioral patterns related to alcohol use even in the early stages of alcohol experimentation, when initial experiences with alcohol are formed, and regular consumption is still evolving. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between detailed behavioral and movement patterns, along with e

Influence of Parental Alcohol Consumption on Adolescent Drinking: A Middle-Range Theory Based on Roy's Adaptation Model.

The objective of this study is to develop a middle-range theory describing how adolescents adapt to parental alcohol consumption from a nursing perspective, using Fawcett's conceptual-theoretical-empirical framework. The theory of adolescent adaptation to parental alcohol consumption explains how adolescents cope with parental problem drinking, considering personal, family, and social factors. Parental alcohol use is conceptualized as a focal stimulus, while adolescent age and sex, stress, and parenting practices act as contextual stimuli, influencing adaptation. The theory's six propositions

Assessing orbitofrontal cortex volume as a predictor of subjective response to alcohol during early adolescence.

Adolescence marks a critical window wherein individual differences in brain structure may influence the emergence of alcohol use behaviors. The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), a region involved in reward processing and behavioral regulation, may play a key role in shaping early responses to alcohol. This study examined whether smaller OFC volume at ages 9-10 predicted likelihood of experiencing subjective effects of alcohol by ages 13-14. Participants (N = 206; 57 % female) were drawn from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Baseline medial and lateral OFC volumes were used. Subjecti

Reciprocal relationships between adolescent mental health difficulties and alcohol consumption.

The directionality of the relationship between adolescent alcohol consumption and mental health difficulties remains poorly understood. This study investigates the longitudinal relationship between alcohol use frequency, internalizing and externalizing symptoms from the ages of 11 to 17. We conducted a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model across three timepoints (ages: 11yrs, 14yrs, 17yrs; 50.4% female) in the Millennium Cohort Study (N = 10,647). Survey weights were used to account for attrition. At each timepoint, past month alcohol use frequency was self-reported, parents and cohort me

The Association Between Intimate Partner Encouragement of Alcohol Use and Alcohol Use Among Females Formerly Involved in the Juvenile Justice System.

Females who are involved with the juvenile justice system as adolescents are at risk for heavy alcohol use, which is associated with an increased risk of recidivism and negative health outcomes. Alcohol use peaks during emerging adulthood and intimate partners play an increasingly important role in decision making during this developmental period. Using data from a longitudinal study of females who were involved in the juvenile justice system as adolescents (n = 80), we investigated whether intimate partner encouragement of alcohol use is associated with higher rates of alcohol use frequency a

Developmental Differences Emerge in How Negative Consequences, Negative Expectancies, and Alcohol Use Relate Over Time.

OBJECTIVE: Learning theories suggest an aversive learning process whereby negative consequences of alcohol use curtail drinking. However, the literature examining this prospective association is mixed. We aimed to clarify this aversive learning process by identifying how (mediators), for whom (moderators), and when (differences across development) such learning occurs. Negative alcohol expectancies were proposed as a mediator, and sensitivity to punishment was proposed as a moderator. Negative consequences were hypothesized to lead to increases in negative expectancies and, in turn, reductions
