Repeat pregnancy among urban adolescents: sociodemographic, family, and health factors.

First-time adolescent mothers are at high risk for a repeat pregnancy. The present investigation, part of an ongoing longitudinal study, examined sociodemographic, family, and health factors associated with repeat Pregnancy in a clinic sample of urban, first-time adolescent mothers (ages 13 to 17 years). They were predominantly African-American and from low-income households. Repeat pregnancy within one year and between one and two years postpartum was determined from medical records. Summary statistics, point biserial correlations, and chi-square statistics were used to analyze the data. Resu

Socio-demographic characteristics and health status of urban Thai elderly.

Socio-demographic and health status of 205 elderly aged 60-90 years who attended a special clinic for the elderly at Rajvithi Hospital were investigated. All of the subjects had no major complaints and seemed to be apparently healthy. Socio-economic situation, life-style pattern and other health related information was assessed. Nearly all of the elderly lived with their relatives. Quite a high number of the females had never attended school. Almost 60% of the elderly had no regular income. The health situation of the individuals under investigation seemed to be satisfactory. The majority did

Jails, prisons, and the health of urban populations: a review of the impact of the correctional system on community health.

This review examined the interactions between the correctional system and the health of urban populations. Cities have more poor people, more people of color, and higher crime rates than suburban and rural areas; thus, urban populations are overrepresented in the nation's jails and prisons. As a result, US incarceration policies and programs have a disproportionate impact on urban communities, especially black and Latino ones. Health conditions that are overrepresented in incarcerated populations include substance abuse, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other infectious diseases, perpetr

Applying the Health Belief Model to Urban Medication Disposal Behaviors: Insights for Public Health Interventions.

Improper disposal of household pharmaceutical waste (HPW) contributes to environmental contamination and public health risks, yet safe disposal practices remain inconsistent in many communities. This study examined the behavioral intentions of urban Malaysian residents toward safe HPW disposal using the Health Belief Model (HBM). A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 450 stratified pharmacy customers across the Klang Valley. Respondents completed a self-administered digital questionnaire assessing HBM constructs on a 6-point Likert scale. Data was analyzed using Partial Least Squares Str

Depressive symptoms and behavioural health risks in young women attending an urban sexual health clinic.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a time of increased health risk behaviours and depressive symptoms and disorders. Most young people with depressive disorders, however, are not under the care of specialist child and adolescent mental health services, and there is increasing interest in identifying alternative appropriate settings which are acceptable for young people and may attract those at high risk for depressive disorders. AIM: To assess depressive and behavioural health risks in attendees to a sexual health clinic (SHC) for young people. METHOD: Cross-sectional controlled study of women atten

An Overview of Public Health Services Among Local Health Departments in Rural Versus Urban Jurisdictions.

CONTEXT: Rural populations face greater barriers to care and worse health outcomes than urban populations. Local health departments (LHDs) serving rural populations may play a key role in bridging the clinical care gap within their communities. OBJECTIVE: To assess and describe the differences in services provided by rural and urban LHDs, as well as the contextual factors contributing to those differences. METHODS: Data from the 2022 National Profile of Local Health Departments was used to estimate the provision of various clinical and population-based services and types of occupations emplo

Coliform pollution in drinking water sources of urban and semi-urban settings of Kashmir: a growing concern for public health.

Coliform contamination has become a major threat to global water security and public health, particularly in developing regions where dependence on untreated or partially treated surface and groundwater remains high. As indicator organisms, coliform bacteria signal fecal pollution and the potential presence of pathogenic microbes responsible for waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, and hepatitis. The Kashmir Valley, which has experienced a rapid population increase and lacks proper sewage treatment facilities, is particularly vulnerable to such dangers. This study assessed the bacter

Mental health spending in Colombia: an analysis of rural and urban areas.

BACKGROUND: Mental health expenditures are increasing worldwide. In developed countries there is evidence that increased health spending is associated with improved outcomes. However, this information may not apply to the Colombian health system that is significantly different and underfunded in comparison with developed countries. METHODOLOGY: We used data from Colombia “Gestion de la Demanda” information system grouped for analysis by geographical areas, age groups, and ICD-10 sub-chapters for mental and behavioural disorders. We performed descriptive analytical techniques and Tufte’s statis

Implementation of a Mental Health Nursing Practicum in an Urban Homeless Shelter.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness suffer from deficient access to health care and disproportionately poor health outcomes. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) maintains learning competencies for prelicensure nursing students. Shelters are rich environments for students to garner experiences with the inequities plaguing our health care system and to fulfill AACN competencies. METHOD: We established a psychiatric and mental health nursing practicum at a homeless shelter. Following a retrospective pretest methodology, we evaluated student learning with the Health Ca

Association between Urban Greenspace and Health: A Systematic Review of Literature.

The current review aimed to explore the association between urban greenspaces and health indicators. In particular, our aims were to analyze the association between publicly accessible urban greenspaces exposure and two selected health outcomes (objectively measured physical activity (PA) and mental health outcomes (MH)). Two electronic databases-PubMed/Medline and Excerpta Medica dataBASE (EMBASE)-were searched from 1 January 2000 to 30 September 2020. Only articles in English were considered. Out of 356 retrieved articles, a total of 34 papers were included in our review. Of those, 15 assess

Assessment of Environmental Hazards to Public Health in Temperate Urban Argentina.

Human health risk in urban areas depends on multiple environmental features. We performed a year-round survey in a highly urbanized district located in temperate Argentina (General San Martín, Buenos Aires) to establish baseline information about environmental hazards associated with health risks. Sampling was stratified into low and high hazardous zones according to estimated indexes previously developed for the area for four hazards: drinking water and air pollution, and mosquito and rodent infestation. Water from wells showed lower concentrations of aluminum, manganese and iron, and higher

Characteristics and health effects of BTEX in a hot spot for urban pollution.

This study reports a spatiotemporal characterization of toluene, benzene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes concentrations (BTEX) in an urban hot spot in Iran, specifically at an bus terminal region in Shiraz. Sampling was carried out according to NIOSH Compendium Method 1501. The inverse distance weighting (IDW) method was applied for spatial mapping. The Monte Carlo simulation technique was applied to evaluate carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk owing to BTEX exposure. The highest average BTEX concentrations were observed for benzene in the morning (at 7:00-9:00 A.M. local time) (26.15 ± 17.65 µg

The mental health gender-gap in urban India: patterns and narratives.

Women report significantly higher levels of mental distress than men in community studies around the world. We provide further evidence on the origins of this mental health gender-gap using data from 789 adults, primarily spousal pairs, from 300 families in Delhi, India. These data were collected between 2001 and 2003. We first confirm that, like in other studies, women report higher levels of mental distress and that gender differences in education, household expenditures and age do not explain the mental health gender-gap. In contrast, women report significantly higher levels of distress tha

[Female reproductive health in the urban areas of varying anthropogenic load].

In the town of Dimitrovgrad, the total ambient pollution was 14.0-16.2 and 1.5-1.8 in the west (polluted) and central (pure) districts, respectively. The major pollutants were nitric dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, phenol, and formaldehyde. In the women living in the west district, the major reproductive functional abnormalities were bacterial vaginosis, neurometabolic-endocrine syndrome, and chronic small pelvic inflammatory diseases. The findings are indicative of a significant impairment in the physiological relationship between the values of hormones and immunity in patients with

Health status and practices of urban Caribbean Latinos with diabetes mellitus.

Although Caribbean Latinos are more likely than non-Hispanic whites to develop diabetes, their health status has been poorly characterized. Information on diabetes management, metabolic control, dietary habits, and diabetes knowledge was gathered from a group of urban Caribbean Latinos with diabetes in order to characterize the nutritional behaviors, diabetes attitudes, health perceptions, and metabolic control of this high risk group. Interviews and medical record reviews were conducted among seventy low-income urban Caribbean Latinos with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients attending outpatie

Homeless families and their children's health problems. A Utah urban experience.

Descriptive information was obtained about homeless families in the Intermountain West and their children's health care needs were defined to help professionals develop programs tailored to meet the unique needs of this population. We collected data during the well-child visits of 306 children in 161 families living at the Travelers Aid Society family shelter. The results reveal 2 types of homeless families, episodic and long term. Each requires different levels of assistance. This study's profile of mobile, predominantly white, 2-parent families with few children (mean of 1.2) differs conside
