Optimizing health service location in a highly urbanized city: Multi criteria decision making and P-Median problem models for public hospitals in Jeddah City, KSA.

Rapid urbanization and population growth have increased the need for optimizing the location of health services in highly urbanized countries like Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). This study employs a multiple-criteria decision making (MCDM) approach, e.g., fuzzy overlay technique by combining the P-Median location-allocation model, for optimizing health services. First, a geodatabase, containing public hospitals, road networks and population districts, was prepared. Next, we investigated the location and services of five public hospitals in Jeddah city of KSA, by using a MCDM model that include

Understanding practitioner professionalism in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health: lessons from student and registrar placements at an urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary healthcare service.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continue to be pathologised in medical curriculum, leaving graduates feeling unequipped to effectively work cross-culturally. These factors create barriers to culturally safe health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In this pilot pre-post study, the learning experiences of seven medical students and four medical registrars undertaking clinical placements at an urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary healthcare service in 2014 were followed. Through analysis and comparison of pre- and post-placement responses to a p

Co-creation, co-design or co-production? Reflections on the development of urban health systems implementation strategies to improve access and quality of primary healthcare services in Bangladesh, Ghana, Nepal and Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing populations and healthcare demand are leading to a burgeoning of private, nongovernmental and informal health providers addressing gaps left by overstretched public primary care and underresourced local government in urban areas in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). While evidence-based interventions exist to address common conditions in primary care, how to implement these interventions within complex urban health system is less clear. Enabling all relevant actors to feed their views and experiences into the process is seen as a key in co-design literature; howe

Variation in Health Care Resources in Rural and Urban Counties Associated with Differences in COVID-19 Mortality.

Few studies have examined whether the variation of health care infrastructure and workforce had potential impacts on COVID-19 mortality in rural counties. Linking national datasets, we stratified 1,548 rural and 1,148 urban U.S. counties using 2021 COVID-19 median mortality rates (19.5 vs. 14.0 per 10,000 population, respectively) as a cut-point for high and low mortality to compare sociodemographics, vaccination status, access to health centers and hospitals, and health care workforce supply between and within rural and urban counties. High-mortality (compared with low-mortality) rural counti

Analysis of Urban Indian Organizations' Promotion of Cancer Services.

ABSTRACT: The burden of cancer remains elevated for American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) in the United States, particularly in urban communities. Urban Indian Organizations (UIO) are a part of the Indian healthcare system for urban AI/AN populations to receive culturally competent care; therefore, it is important that UIOs convey the importance of cancer preventive and treatment options through their websites. The purpose of this study was to utilize the Indian Health Service (IHS) Office of Urban Indian Health Programs’ official website to identify, analyze, and describe the IHS-funded UIO

Health and well-being of movers in rural and urban areas--a grid-based analysis of northern Finland birth cohort 1966.

We examined the association of health and well-being with moving using a detailed geographical scale. 7845 men and women born in northern Finland in 1966 were surveyed by postal questionnaire in 1997 and linked to 1 km(2) geographical grids based on each subject's home address in 1997-2000. Population density was used to classify each grid as rural (1-100 inhabitants/km²) or urban (>100 inhabitants/km²) type. Moving was treated as a three-class response variate (not moved; moved to different type of grid; moved to similar type of grid). Moving was regressed on five explanatory factors (life sa

Gaining ground, losing ground: the paradoxes of rural homelessness.

The study examined rural housing and homelessness issues and looked at similarities and differences between rural and urban areas. It involved a secondary analysis of focus group data collected in a 2001-06 Community University Research Alliance study of mental health and housing. The findings highlight concerns regarding the lack of services, which can precipitate a move from a rural to an urban community. Inadequate transportation services often posed a challenge to rural residents attempting to access services. Many participants preferred rural living but felt they had to choose between res

The association between residential relocation and mortality among Veterans with experience of housing instability in rural areas.

PURPOSE: Housing instability deleteriously affects health outcomes (i.e., lack of access to care, premature mortality). Veterans experiencing housing instability in rural areas-which often lack housing options, transportation, and services-have greater odds of residential relocation compared to urban Veterans, and they most frequently relocate to urban areas. Urban relocation is associated with changes in health outcomes, including increased services use, but studies have not examined the association between residential relocation and mortality. METHODS: This study used Veterans Affairs elect

Rural-Urban Inequalities in Poor Self-Rated Health, Self-Reported Functional Disabilities, and Depression among Chinese Older Adults: Evidence from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011 and 2015.

The household registration system (Hukou) in China classifies persons into rural or urban citizens and determines eligibility for state-provided services and welfare. Not taking actual residence into account may underestimate rural-urban differences. This study investigates rural-urban inequalities in self-reported health outcomes among older adults aged 60+, taking into account both Hukou and actual residence, adjusting for sociodemographic determinants, based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2011 and 2015. Self-Rated Health (SRH) was assessed with a single qu
