Risk factors of bladder stones in neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction: A real-world study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate the incidence and risk factors for stone formation and recurrence in patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) in a real-world cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on all patients with NLUTD who underwent bladder stone treatment between 2010 and 2022. Univariate and multivariate Cox models were used to identify the potential risk factors for stone recurrence. RESULTS: Among 114 patients included in the study, 30% experienced stone recurrence. The most common stone components w

Clinical profile of motor neuron disease patients with lower urinary tract symptoms and neurogenic bladder.

INTRODUCTION: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are frequent in motor neuron disease (MND) patients, but clinical factors related to them are unknown. We describe differences in LUTS among MND phenotypes and their relationship with other clinical characteristics, including prognosis. METHODS: For this study, we collected clinical data of a previously published cohort of patients diagnosed with classical amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (cALS), progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) or primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) with and without LUTS. Familial history was recorded and the C9ORF72 expansion was

Molecular Characterization of Non-Neurogenic and Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction (LUTD) in SCI-Induced and Partial Bladder Outlet Obstruction Mouse Models.

We examined bladder function following spinal cord injury (SCI) by repeated urodynamic investigation (UDI), including external urethral sphincter (EUS) electromyography (EMG) in awake restrained mice and correlated micturition parameters to gene expression and morphological changes in the bladder. A partial bladder outlet obstruction (pBOO) model was used for comparison to elucidate both the common and specific features of obstructive and neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD). Thirty female C57Bl/6J mice in each group received an implanted bladder catheter with additional electrode

Value of sufficient clean intermittent catheterization in urinary tract infection and upper urinary tract protection in children with neurogenic bladder.

INTRODUCTION: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is a mainstay in the management of neurogenic bladder. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of CIC on urinary tract infection and upper renal tract function in pediatric patients with neurogenic bladder, and the influence of duration of CIC on these variables. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study was performed in 67 pediatric patients with neurogenic bladder who started CIC between 2014 and 2019 at our institution. The febrile urinary tract infection (fUTI) rate, renal pelvis diameter (measured by antero-posterior renal pelvis diameter, APPD),

Assessment of quality of life in patients with neurogenic bladders who undergone urinary system reconstruction (Mitrofanoff).

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the additional contribution of the Mitrofanoff channel to health-related quality of life (HRQoL). METHODS: Between 2005 and 2009, we conducted a retrospective study on 10 pediatric patients who underwent Mitrofanoff surgery for neurogenic bladder and 11 control patients using urethral catheterization. We evaluated HRQoL using questionnaires tailored for various age groups, with higher scores indicating better QoL. RESULTS: The mean age in the patient group was 12.8 years and 10.7 years in the control group (p = 0.103). Shunt use and wheelc

Dual fluid silhouette in X-ray of the abdomen: a diagnostic flag for neurogenic bladder with urinary ascites.

A neonate presented with abdominal distension and decreased urinary output. X-ray revealed dual abdominal fluid condition-ascites with a distended bladder, along with vertebral anomalies. The possibility of urinary ascites and neurogenic bladder was kept, which was further confirmed on evaluation. Here, we emphasise the crucial role of abdominal X-ray as a diagnostic tool in uncovering this intricate medical puzzle. By detailing the clinical presentation, diagnostic approach and treatment strategy, the report contributes insights into the rare and complex abdominal condition.

The ability of prior urinary cultures results to predict future culture results in neurogenic bladder patients.

AIMS: To determine if previous urinary cultures can predict the organism and susceptibility of subsequent urinary cultures in patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction. METHODS: We retrospectively identified a sample of neurogenic bladder patients from a tertiary care urology clinic (July 2015-July 2016). We reviewed the patient chart, and then used the electronic laboratory record to identify all urine cultures done in the 2 years prior. We identified sequential culture pairs and determined the concordance of the initial culture organism to the subsequent one and similarly the concordance

[Non-neurogenic activators of myocyte contraction and their role in the realization of the accumulative-evacuating functions of the urinary bladder].

The search for and use of alternative biomarkers of the hyperactive bladder has garnered increasing attention in recent years because they may be considered pathogenetically significant and used as surrogate biomarkers. Promising agents that have met these criteria include proteins cytokines, neurotrophins, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), fibrinopeptides A and B, C-reactive protein, membrane-bound ATPase. Analysis of current scientific literature has demonstrated that specialists in many fields of medicine show interest in endogenous proteins that do not belong to neuro

Systematic review of the epidemiology of urinary incontinence and detrusor overactivity among patients with neurogenic overactive bladder.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and incidence of neurogenic overactive bladder (nOAB) are poorly defined. This systematic literature review identified nOAB epidemiological data and estimated the incidence and prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) and detrusor overactivity (DO) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injury (SCI), Parkinson's disease (PD), stroke and spina bifida. An initial search of MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and the Cochrane library was supplemented by an internet search for grey literature and manual searching of the bibliographies of retrieved articles. Stress urinary incontinence as a rare presentation of large prostatic stones in neurogenic bladder: implications and management.

We report a case of a 38-year-old man with a background of a neglected neurogenic bladder, who presented with a recent onset history of stress urinary incontinence. He was diagnosed as having large prostatic stones along with a low-compliance, small capacity bladder and bilateral hydronephrosis with deranged renal functions. As self-catheterisation was not possible due to obstructing prostatic stones, holmium-YAG laser lithotripsy of prostatic stones was performed as initial procedure that resulted in complete resolution of stress incontinence as well. Successful gastrocystoplasty was performe

Urinary diversion in children and adolescents with neurogenic bladder: the Mainz experience. Part III: Colonic conduit.

After the failure of conservative treatment of neurogenic bladders, urinary diversion has to be considered. For patients with chronic renal failure, severe dilated upper urinary tracts with deterioration of the renal function and those who are not able to perform a self-catheterization, the colonic conduit diversion is our therapy of choice. In this part of the study, we investigate the long-term safety of our concept for these patients in regard to protecting the upper urinary tracts. Between 1968 and 2002, colonic conduit urinary diversion was performed in 88 patients, in most of them in the

Urinary Tract Infection Diagnostic and Management Considerations in People with Spinal Cord Injury and Neurogenic Bladder.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common complications in people with neurogenic bladder. Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are challenging for several reasons, including a high prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria and catheter use, frequent ambiguous nonlocalizing signs and symptoms, increased risk for complications and difficult-to-treat pathogens, and a lack of effective preventative methods. Current research aims to improve elicitation and evaluation of signs and symptoms, implement algorithms to avoid urine cultures in asymptomatic patients and use appropriate antibiotics for UTI,

Perceptions, experiences, and beliefs regarding urinary tract infections in patients with neurogenic bladder: A qualitative study.

Although urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in patients with neurogenic bladder (NB), limited data exist on UTI perceptions, experiences, and beliefs in these patients. We recruited adults with NB due to spinal cord injury/disorder (SCI/D) or multiple sclerosis (MS) at three Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers to participate in 11 virtual focus groups. Audio transcripts were coded using a mixed approach with primary deductive codes linked to the Health Belief Model, and secondary inductive codes informed by grounded theory. Twenty-three Veterans (SCI/D, 78%; MS, 18.5%) participated b

Defining the role of the bladder-neck sling in the surgical treatment of urinary incontinence in children with neurogenic incontinence.

Patient selection for the creation of a fascial sling procedure to increase outlet resistance has been somewhat controversial. We review our experience with the fascial sling technique and report our patient selection process. Since 1991, 30 patients, including 6 males and 24 females aged 4-20 years (mean 10 years), underwent a rectus fascial sling procedure as part of their reconstructive efforts for continence. The underlying cause of incontinence was neurogenic in 28 patients. All males were prepubertal. Videourodynamics were performed in all patients preoperatively. Criteria for enhancemen
